Thin Lizzy-Roisin Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend

Released in 1979, I think this piece topped every Hard Rock song of the 70's. With all due respect to "Stairway To Heaven" and "Hotel California", Gary Moore's Celtic Folk-inspired solo is far more interesting than either of the solos found in those selections. Add Lynott's wistful lyrics and spirited delivery, and it's a stone solid classic. It was graced with a combination of the sentimentality of "The Boys Are Back In Town" and their most orchestrated guitarwork. It has a classic appeal that none of their peers could match.

I love Thin Lizzy  and that track is outstanding. It's one of those songs were, first time I heard it I felt like I already knew it...

Gotta love Gary Moore, he's pretty underrated as a guitarist though.

i got to see them last year (without phil of course)

first concert ever and although i was at the back row of the balcony it was still one of the best nights of my life

i go up to dublin every now and again and always go straight to his statue :)

some racist irish site was making plans to tear it down though :anger:

Thin Lizzy are IMO the best rock band to emerge from the 1970's, and this is one of their best. But at the same time, you must say that competition is heavy for this title. "Hotel California" comes up as the greatest contender for me. I can't really argue your points, but I could if you had said rock instead of hard rock.

WHAT!??!?!?!?!?!? :angry::fuckyou::anger:

Phil is my hero.

I am a huge fan, and they were always loved in Sweden.

Black Rose is a masterpiece though one song or two can be discussed.

It is a lifegoal of mine to visit the statue, and maybe his grave and pay my respect.

don't know much thin lizzy... i really wanna get into them though, what albums should i check out?

Start with "Jailbreak"

then get "Black Rose"

the follow up with "Live and Dangerous" and "Johnny the Fox"

then you get "Bad Reputation"

when youve gone this far you need no more assistance :)

Chinatown is the second album he should buy, after Black Rose. Jailbreak is third.

Wishbone Ash pioneered, and were better, at the twin guitar work that Lizzy made big.

Wishbone Ash are amazing. "So Many Things To Say" is an awesome start to Wishbone Four, that bittersweet melody against that whining guitar...and I love "Warrior" and "Throw Down the Sword" on Argus. That epic opening. :) Those duelling guitars...

I should have gone to see one of the versions of Wishbone Ash that toured recently...but hopefully they'll come around soon.
