sweetness
My guitar teacher is moving to southern Califronia in a week so I only have one more lesson before he goes, hes probably the best guitar teacher in my area. Hes got me on the right direction in terms of influence and I'd hate to get lessons from somebody else with a different philosophy. He has offered his more advanced students internet or mail lessons from Cali, me included. What do you guys know about these kind of guitar lessons? Do you recomend them? Should I try and find a new teacher?I need some advice
Bucketslash
Well, coming from me, first of all, hit wikipedialook up some techniques(sweep picking, chicken picking, pick tapping, and finger picking are versatile and can be used in any style), and ask if you can get him to show you themthen get the vids, and finally, get a new teacher, the vids for is continues guidance(keep in contact as a friend)the teacher is there because no one can just watch a video and suddenly get it(cept buckethead, but he didn't need to see the video in the first place, he chances are, ALREADY got it),so in the end, get the videos for guidance on your own, for better practicing, get a teacher to continue to grow, but pick his brain considering it's the last lesson

quadlaser
don't listen to bucketslash, he sucks . if you have the money it's always best to have a teacher (with you). if nothing else, they will keep you from developing bad habits. a video can't do that.since he knows where you stand, have him recommend a couple of songs that you're almost good enough to learn, then learn them. sweetness
Yeah, I think Im going to get a new teacher and still keep in touch with my old one on the internet. Seems like the best way to go in this situation, because this guy is one hell of a guitar player and a teacher.
Mr_Oujamaflip
Not to toot my own horn, so to speak, but I believe I had a very good way of learning from the start. I've been playing since last february and I did not have a teacher until around October. This gave me a chance to develop my own way of playing, making it comfortable for me, since teachers have a habit of making you do something how they did it (in my experience anyway) which may, or may not be the best way for YOU. Having said this once I got a teacher, he helped iron out my mistakes in the past, although I didn't realise they were mistakes, (playing by using the fingerboard for stability rather than the bridge) and he also pointed me in the right direction. My teacher is also leaving his job to go somewhere so I am in the same predicament as you. I would suggest getting a teacher later, but for now develop your own "touch" on the instrument, since you have some direction of scales and such, self teaching yourself these shouldn't be too hard. But taking it further is where tuition is recommended. There are two types of player in my opinion. People who play, knowing songs, chords and scales without knowing how they work; and people who play, know the full structure, development and execution of music. Decide which you want, then get a teacher if you need it.Just trying to help.
