swlabr
I stated in a previous thread that Rock n' Roll - to me - is The Beatles, The Kinks, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones and even James Brown (to some extent). I really don't understand when people say that Motley Crue, GNR, Van Halen and whatever other bands might come to mind are RnR. Of course it's their opinion and I totally respect it. I also do take note of the influences but they should not be credited as the pioneers. Maybe not so much Pioneers, but just the title. It doesn't fit with other bands except those of the time. What bands/general ideas come to mind when you hear the phrase Rock N' Roll? Apart from the freedom and rebellion associated with the word, what else do you think of?Discuss.
LCG
I agree with you here. There is a difference between rock n' roll and hard rock
sweetness
While there may be a difference between hard rock and rock n roll as subgenres, rock n roll is often used to describe the whole thing so its understandable as to why GNR and the Crue might get lumped in with bands like the Beatles. To me, rock n roll is the blues kicked up a few notches with a little more respect for the minor and major scales. f**k_your_enemy
I think nowadays people use the term "ROCK N' ROLL" as an attitude rather than a genre.
swlabr
I think nowadays people use the term "ROCK N' ROLL" as an attitude rather than a genre.Yeah, that what I think too. Sometimes it's used so much and for the wrong reasons that that the word just wears out, you know. That's why I asked to keep it's emotional association out, which is kind of hard to do. That's why I asked to keep it's emotional association out, which is kind of hard to do.I agree with both of you Rock 'n' roll (music) is just what you said, early rock from 50's & 60's when rock 'n' roll (attitude) is something what rock bands after the rock 'n' roll period of 50's & 60's claim to have. But r'n'r (a) is waaay overused - I swear I've seen even dolls selled with r'n'r.. Edited September 24, 2006 by Wando

.Seal
Well it varies from the era.. but well I'd say that it's more about the attitude and like said the term rock n' roll is very very overused these days.
Mr_Oujamaflip
For me Rock N' Roll is the roots of all music classified as "Rock" or "Metal" that's hard rock, blues rock, metal, speed metal, thrash metal, death metal and all the others. It's also a way of thinking, how you live to enjoy life, rather than living to get to your 100th birthday. To me, 1 year of enjoyment is better than 100 years of boredom. JONEZY
Rock n Roll is personified by musicians playing intstruments in the studio and on stage. Not everybody who does this is good or great, but at least they try and don't rely on samples.
DirtyDeeds
I think 50s rockers. Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard. There are aa FEW newer bands I would also lable this way... when I say newer, I mean, as in newer than the 50s. Basically the Faces and the Black Crowes and other boogie rock. I think the term boogie rock is silly, because it's just plain rock n' roll. Zint
Rock and Roll is a state of mind, wherein which...you are free from opression, rules, bias, strife, chaos,or whatever freedoms you are looking for (consciously or subconsciously). It's a cleansing of the soul,by whichever artists you choose to get you there (it's the reason why you identify with certain songs at different periods in your life). It rises you above the norms of society, which is it's greatest gift. frankwhite
guitar orientated music with bass n drums as the rhythm section. depending on the band though u can embellish with a lotta other shit in there, but that is the basic foundation. once those elements are lost, it aint rock n roll (to me).
