lagofala Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Why does it seem that the black youths go become rappers, R&B artists or soul singers in boybands? What happened to the guitar players or rockers? They've got a great tradition of producing great guitarists--Robert Cray, BB King, Buddy Guy.Jimi Hendrix. God, Even Slash is half black! What Happened? Quote

sweetness Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 You obviously havent been looking too hard, most of the black guitar players are playing the blues at bars in Chicago, Memphis, Detroit... fuck, any big city. Thanks to Katrina weve been getting a lot of black musicians up here in Lansing too, from sax to guitar players. You wont see any in the mainstream, not when most of the guitar oriented acts are all about hateing themselves. God, Even Slash is half black! What Happened?Well, you could classify every guitarist you listed as a Blues guitarist, and Blues is not only a black music for the most part, but a guitar-based one as well. I think the answer here is that black, guitar-based music isn't very big right now. Otherwise, I think you could say that there's a strong African-American vocal tradition, and that really shows right now. Quote
