A social experiment? Yeah, one that he's publishing for financial gain.

Unless these people signed legal documents, he has no right to use their letters to him. The publication of this book is illegal in so many ways. He's self-publishing it, which is why it hasn't run into any problems yet (legal-wise). Someone should drop Merck an e-mail and let him know this is going on.

Is it still illegal if he doesn't print the real names of the people that wrote to him? There are probably legal loopholes he can use.

Impersonating a celebrity and printing the feedback you received during this period for financial gain is highly illegal, regardless of whether he prints names or not.
