Chuckle-Bros
Zappa was my first concert...1975,a mindblowing experience to say the least!I saw him again in the early 80's (82 I think)...it was a LOT more jam oriented,Frank was on fire man,it was so fucking cool...Frank was really letting loose with his solos!one of my all time fav guitaristsWas the 75 band the one with Chester Thompson and Ruth Underwood, etc? Because thats some of the most complex playing I've ever heard.
bax
I ended up getting Zappa in New York and it is nothing short of mind-blowing. I will definitely be getting heavily into Zappa. I never knew just how great a composer and guitar player he really was. Now I can hear his influence in a lot of things I wasn't aware of before. I think The Mars Volta must've been influenced by Zappa a lot. Edited September 1, 2006 by bax

Chuckle-Bros
Cool. Bozzio was Zappa's best drummer, in my opinion, closely followed by the aforementioned Thompson, who is so highly skilled.I know Captain Beefheart was on part of the 75 tour, which was recorded as Bongo Fury, shame you didnt get to see that. Estranged Reality
I have some of his stuff, and I think the only song I like is Catholic Girls. What's the big deal? Yeah, I get that he was progressive rock and revolutionized by providing edgy humor in music, but still...Any fans?

'willie the pimp' from 'hot rats' is one of the best guitar oriented songs i've ever heard, its fucking superb. he is soorly missed, no one is quite like him....well maybe weird al minus the musical talent. Lithium
Didnt he name his kid "Moon Unit"? JONEZY
I always admired him for taking on the PMRC. He was intelligent, and the do-gooder-censorship-mongers weren't expecting that.

M_B
Whats his best album to get/start with?apostrophe or shiek yerbouti. he has such a massive catalogue, its hard to pick where to start. hot rats has mind blowing guitar solos and instrumentals, apostrophe is a concept album based around eskimos and its just amazing (esp yellow snow and nanouk rubs it), shiek yerbouti has a few of the greatest zappa songs like 'broken hearts are for assholes' and 'bobby brown' which highlight his wit and skill for social commentary
Mr-brownstone
Hmm, I think you are missing the whole picture. His music compositions were amazing, more so then any other rock musician ever. Catholic girls is a very poor represntation of his true brilliance.

FunkyMonk
Some people were talking about him a few weeks ago on here. So I looked up some stuff they told me about, and now I love it all! I listen to him more than a lot of bands these days, both funny and great music.
M_B
im obsessed with zappa.he was a true genius. his knowledge of music and how he orchestrated such busy music was astounding. his gift for guitar playing is up therer with the best. you should look on youtube for some of his shows, there's some great clips. he also chose very carefully his musicians, which is evident and pays off when you see the concerts; they're flawless. they'd rehearse for something like 5 days a week solidly for about 5 months before touring.anyway, 'apostrophe' is a masterpiece, as is 'hot rats'. an essential for people with good taste.
