The Kids Aren't Alright

Without a doubt, The Offsprings 1998 release of Americana is the finest moment of their long career. Including such hits as "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" and "Walla Walla". Recently going back through my old albums, I popped this in, and found what could be argued as The Offsprings most significant moment. I found this in the song "The Kids Aren't Alright" a song that speaks truth far beyond anything I've previously heard, it also happens to have this extremely enticing tune to it. This is the unheard anthem of a generation. (For The record, I'm far from being an Offspring fan. However, when I hear brilliance in music, I will admit it.)

When we were young the future was so bright (whoa)

The old neighborhood was so alive (whoa)

And every kid on the whole damn street (whoa)

Was gonna make it big in every beat.

Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn (whoa)

The kids are grown up but their lives are worn(whoa)

How can one little street

Swallow so many lives?

Chorus:

Chances blown

Nothing's free

Longing for

What used to be

Still it's hard

Hard to see

Fragile lives

Shattered dreams

Go!

Jamie had a chance, well she really did (whoa)

Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids (whoa)

Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job (whoa)

Just plays guitar, smokes a lot of pot

Jay commited suicide (whoa)

Brandon OD'd and died (whoa)

What the hell is going on?

Cruelest dream reality

Chances blown, nothing's free

Longing for what used to be

Still, it's hard, hard to see

Fragile lives, shattered dreams

Go!

Chances blown, nothing's free

Longing for what used to be

Still, it's hard, hard to see

Fragile lives, shattered dreams

I always liked the song that he's talkin about why dont you get a job.. maybe the name of the song, i forget.. and the one about check your baggage at the door.. i like that one too..... I used to date a girl that I swore he wrote that song about..lol... But I think Self esteem and keep 'em seperated were their best, especially keep 'em seperated... the lyrics are fuckin awesome and kinda point out the ignorance of gang's and their member's... that song's the main reason I stayed away from gangs and shit when i was in school
