1955: Chuck Berry-Maybellene

Do I really need to go over this one? Country guitar picking, Blues shouting, and a teenaged attitude, and what you've got is "Rock and Roll".

1965: The Beatles-Yesterday

Things got real serious with the release of this song. Very few could dispute the talents of the group after hearing such a simple yet beautiful lament.

1967: The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Purple Haze

This one really hit hard and seemingly from out of nowhere. Rock guitar as we have known it since was defined.

1970: T. Rex-Ride a White Swan

Marc Bolan essentially establishes Glam Rock with this release, as he pairs slick grooves with nonsensical lyrics in a way that only he could.

That's enough for today, let's hear some more!

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

My Name Is - Eminem

We all know about Nirvana, so I've nothing to say on that one.

But good call with Em. That one really got the whole damn country worked up.

Ya opened 'white america/canada/etc.' to a completely different culture.

Definately one of the biggest factors in the shift of popular music, and completely changed the dynamic of the suburbs.

1964: Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone

Bob heralds in a new era of his career, releasing the single greatest #2 song ever recorded (Help! was #1 the week Bob released Rolling Stone). It was the first single and first song of the magnificent Highway 61 Revisited LP, and shook the folk culture and 60s counter culture to its knees.

1967: The Beatles - Strawberry Fields, I Am The Walrus

If I need to explain anything about these songs and why they were so influential, go listen to them again.

1975: Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Bruce's definitive song. It captures all aspects of the Boss and his style: the driving synths, pounding guitars, blistering sax solo, concerto-style movement changes and key switches, and of course that voice and those lyrics. This song took Bruce from being a pretty good performer to a legend in the eyes of pop culture, setting the stage for Born in the USA to redefine American rock a few years later.

The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love

For a single glorious moment the british public went crazy for a fun band who write great songs, without any prodding from NME or Q. Six months later the ciritcal establishment had recover to crush them to be replaced with their prefabricated indie idols. But for a short while - before they realized they weren't supposed to like them - the people were free.

Elvis Presley

Heartbreak Hotel

1956/Feb. 11

This release changed the face of modern pop culture...literally blew the doors off the hinges.

The floodgates were open and there was no turning back.

I wanna hold your hand - Beatles

this single was the breakthrough in the US for the beatles and the beginning of the beatlemania.

quite right...and inspired a whole new generation of fledgling musicians, many of whom went on to rock superstardom.

The impact of this release was like an atom bomb in the rock world.

Singlehandeldy the most important release of the 60's.
