Guest Ohdistortedsmile1789
1955: Chuck Berry-MaybelleneDo I really need to go over this one? Country guitar picking, Blues shouting, and a teenaged attitude, and what you've got is "Rock and Roll".1965: The Beatles-YesterdayThings got real serious with the release of this song. Very few could dispute the talents of the group after hearing such a simple yet beautiful lament.1967: The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Purple HazeThis one really hit hard and seemingly from out of nowhere. Rock guitar as we have known it since was defined.1970: T. Rex-Ride a White SwanMarc Bolan essentially establishes Glam Rock with this release, as he pairs slick grooves with nonsensical lyrics in a way that only he could. That's enough for today, let's hear some more! axlslash
1964: Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling StoneBob heralds in a new era of his career, releasing the single greatest #2 song ever recorded (Help! was #1 the week Bob released Rolling Stone). It was the first single and first song of the magnificent Highway 61 Revisited LP, and shook the folk culture and 60s counter culture to its knees.1967: The Beatles - Strawberry Fields, I Am The WalrusIf I need to explain anything about these songs and why they were so influential, go listen to them again.1975: Bruce Springsteen - Born to RunBruce's definitive song. It captures all aspects of the Boss and his style: the driving synths, pounding guitars, blistering sax solo, concerto-style movement changes and key switches, and of course that voice and those lyrics. This song took Bruce from being a pretty good performer to a legend in the eyes of pop culture, setting the stage for Born in the USA to redefine American rock a few years later. moreblack
I'd have more fun perhaps with a list of singles that came out on the same days as these revolutionary ones, but which nobody remembers...
Maddergascar
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called LoveFor a single glorious moment the british public went crazy for a fun band who write great songs, without any prodding from NME or Q. Six months later the ciritcal establishment had recover to crush them to be replaced with their prefabricated indie idols. But for a short while - before they realized they weren't supposed to like them - the people were free.
