Lithium Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I'm a fan of The Stooges, but I haven't really looked into Iggy's solo material. Quote
Alty Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Definately. It's verging on obsessional these days.Couldn't pick a favourite. There's far too many like. Quote
Guest knerken Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Stooges are great. What I have heard from his solo-thing is kinda lame. Quote
ffrankwhite Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 you cannot measure Iggy Pops importance on fucking music today. the guy is nothing short of an absolute genius and about as perfect a performer as you can fucking get. The Stooges are a fucking amazing band, make no mistake about, probably the single most powerful sounding band that ever fucking existed. their songs, the three albums the stooges, funhouse, raw power, each unto themselves are just...more than perfect, more than works of art. funhouse and raw power particularly are like the embodiment of existentialist america. As a performer, to this day, no one can perform like Iggy Pop, no one but no one. when he was smothering himself with peanut butter and walking across the crowd at the cinncinati pop festival, challenging his audience in EVERY way possible way he was rolling around in glass, whipping out his dick its...there are no words to explain what iggy pop is like on a stage, he stalks the fucking stage like a bored snarling feline sociopath looking for something to instigate with, its so fucking vibrant to see and all these wild antics have pretty much been summed up by iggy as "i give a lot to an audience and this is what i do when i feel im not getting enough back". makes sense. The perfect response to the lite of the 60s, funhouse and raw power are like these electric slabs piledriver music that are perfect direct precise and pulsing with intent. reductive music at its best, not a word wasted, bits vribbed from the blues, simplicity with a lilting poetic quality (at least to the first two albums) that is inimitable.Raw Power pretty much took three chords rock n roll as far as it can go and it is as good as it gets. i think its pretty much the best rock n roll album ever. i can't think of any better...beggars banquet, nevermind the bollocks, the new york dolls? i dont know, i really cant say, i think raw power beats them. none are louder, more brash, more...just listen to it, turn it up, listen to it, it speaks for itself.the stooges go up in smoke so whats an Iguana to do? the guy lost his fuckin mind, went to a mental institution, fixed himself up and comes out solo with albums like the idiot, lust for life, collaborating David Bowie and forging his niche in american entertainment and rock n roll as probably the single most individualistic performer in fucking existence. he's such a succinct writer, songs like Blah Blah Blah, China Girl, Lust For Life...even unregarded Stooges tracks like Cock In My Pocket, every single last Iggy Pop composition has a point. he's such a fucking intellect, such a wit and like every true intellect, its taken all these fuckin years for people to go "oh yeah, i see!!" so it comes to where you cant see an album like funhouse anymore with a sticker from rolling stone going "the single most important american album of ALL time" when you couldnt get the thing for love nor money like 4 months after it was released. oh well, such is life. he's still going, never stopped, not ever. even became a pretty fucking fair actor, starring alongside Johnny Depp in Jim Jarmuschs Dead Man & Crybaby, also Jim Jarmucsches Coffee & Cigaretttes, the spanish sci-fi Atollodero, the nickolodeon show Pete & Pete while still consistently releasing endlessly listenable solo stuff (beat em up, skull ring). Iggys always been around, doing what Iggy does. he's so fuckin inimitable and there'll never be a performer like him. why just a couple of weeks i think ago he was shaking up englands glastonbury festival by getting the fans to jump the barriers and take over the entire fucking stage, to exclusion of himself. in this day and age, it took a sixty something iggy to shake up this youth festival, performing with oodles of energy still that most 21 years olds couldn't fucking muster up. he is about as far and as good as it can get, the fulfillment of all rock n rolls promises. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, The NY Dolls, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, the fucking everybody claims an Iggy influence, people call Nirvana the saviours of rock n roll, bullshit, it was Iggy. he totally changed rock n rolls direction and has informed the entire genre from the 70s onwards, Altamont killed the sentiment of the 60s, Nixon killed the spirit of the 60s, Iggy killed the music of the 60s. the only reason Altamont and Nixon are tragic episodes of american history and Iggy aint is because Iggy destroyed what was there and left something in its place. make no mistake about it, whether you like it or not, Iggy Pop has effected your life, if you are a fan of rock n roll/rock/ rock orientated music, Iggy Pop has effected your life, your life and mine, Iggy Pop is a genius and i dont think any one single being changed the course of american popular music more than this man.
