Soul Asylum Readies First Album In Eight Years

    April 07, 2006, 3:45 PM ET

    Katie Hasty, N.Y.

Soul Asylum will release its long-awaited new studio album this summer, the band's first in nearly eight years. "The Silver Lining" will arrive July 11 via Legacy and features some of the final recordings of late bassist Karl Mueller, who died of throat cancer last June.

Originally slated for a March release, "The Silver Lining" was co-produced by Steve Hodge (Janet Jackson, Sting, Usher) and John Fields in Minneapolis.

"It will always remind me of Karl when I listen to it," group member Dan Murphy says. "He was really sick, but still pulled through and finished it in Soul Asylum fashion."

Drummer Michael Bland (Prince, Dixie Chicks, Sons Of Almighty) contributed to the album as did the Replacements' Tommy Stinson, who stood in as bassist for two tracks ("Bus Named Desire" and "Oxygen") and sang on four. According to a spokesperson, Bland and Stinson will join Murphy and vocalist Dave Pirner on a spring tour, which begins April 12 in Minneapolis and will run through August.

"Stand Up and Be Strong," the first track on the new album, is currently available on the band's MySpace.com page.

  2. Fender.

    - better value for money

Fender starts at 350,- bucks (Mexico Standart Series). The stock pickups can't live up to professional standarts, but they do get the job done and you can still replace them later on. A decent and nice looking Gibson starts at about three times the price of a Fender.

    - more versatile

Strats and Teles have the better clean tones, especially on the neck pickups. And if you put a humbucker into the bridge position of a Stratocaster, you can get fatass rock tones (AC/DC, GN'R) like from a Les Paul. But you will NEVER make a Les Paul sound like a Stratocaster, no matter how much you modify it.

    - don't need to be pampered

A guitar is an INSTRUMENT, not something you should be afraid to break if you only look at it. I've never seen cracked headstocks on a Fender. You can treat this guitar clean or mean - it will always be there for you.

    - who cares about the look?

Gibsons look nicer with all the bindings, maple tops and gold hardware. But at the end of the day, SOUND is what really matters. What was good enough for Hendrix is good enough for ANY guitarist. Slash recorded parts of AFD on a Strat, Page recorded the entire first Zep album with a Tele. What other proof do you need for that a Fender can sound just as cool and rock just as hard as a Gibson?

    GET A FENDER!!!!!!!!

    @ molander

Instead of the '72 Tele, check out the SQUIER TELECASTER CUSTOM II (the one with the P-90's). It has the same look, but it's a lot more versatile and has much better pickups. The dry tone (unplugged) of this guitar is already unbelieveable, but the pickups just sound out of this world. Also, it has one of the nicest necks I've ever played on an electric guitar, real chunky, just like old Les Pauls. Better value for less money, check this guitar out!

  3. More comments always appreciated :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I recorded this with my MG-30 DFX:

    click, save target as

The ryhthm guitar was done on a Squier Telecaster Custom II with P-90 soapbar single coils using the neck pickup, and the solo was done on a Fender Stratocaster with alnico single coils using the bridge pickup. The middle part is the Squier Tele again with both P-90's (middle position).

The recording quality is not very good, but you should get the idea. The MG-30 settings were:

Overdrive Channel - 2 (slight crunch)

    Bass - 7

    Mids - 5

    Treble - 9

FDD (tube simulation) - off (rhythm, middle part), on (solo)

Hope that helps a bit! :)

  4. MG are decent, old valvestates sound better though IMO. Before they switched to the AVT tube hybrids.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm using an MG-30 DFX for practise, recording and small jams with friends.

I'd say it's very good for blues based rock like GN'R, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Hendrix and stuff.

I don't use the effects, but reverb, delay, chorus and flanger they all sound very nice. The clean channel sucks, but it has a nice distorsion/overdrive channel, and it's quite solid and reliable.

  5. Amp:

Take the Marshall MG-15 DFX (15 Watts, enough for practise and recordings, has build in effects, very good) or the Marshall MG-30 DFX (the same, but with 30 watts powerful enough to use it in a band or live in small venues)

    Guitars:

Strat or Tele - Fender Mexico (preferably from the early to mid-90's) or a decent used 80's copy by Hohner, Vester, Chery or Fenix. Everything else in that price range (or below) is crap. A decent Strat or Tele starts at 250,- bucks used.

Les Paul, SG - Epiphone Custom or Standart (not Special) or a decent used 70's copy by Ibanez, Samick, Tokai etc.

Also, some Ibanez and Yamaha (Pacifica) guitars are an option in the lower price range.

Stay away from anything made in China - most of that is crap (pickups, bridge, tuner, wood). Those guitars look nice, but they don't sound or feel anything like the real thing. Squier guitars were good when they were still made in Japan (JV series 1980's) or Korea. The current models are junk, stay away from that.

    Good luck!

  6. Guitar work is awsome, that riff is a winnar. Drums sound good, howd you get the drums, cause they dont sound midi.  The vocals are abit unclear though, what effects do you have on it, have you over dubed the vocals cause its too hard to tell. Sounds awsome though keep  it up !

    Thanks for the feedback!

Drums were made with a drum computer, vocals have a bit of chorus on the main track, but there's two guide tracks with delay underneath that I couldn't get rid of in the mix, so it sounds a bit weird.

If you like the song, here's an alternate acoustic sketch:

    www.sixsongs.com/reruns_unplugged.mp3

I did not put much effort into singing here, as this was just a note to myself basically, yet it sounds a bit more like myself...lol.

  7. Alright, here's a little preview of my demo:

    www.sixsongs.com/reruns.mp3

It's a home recorded demo. Nothing fancy, just as good as I could do it on my own with shit equipment.

If I had a better microphone, the vocals and guitars would sound much better. But it was between recording it like this or not recording it at all, so here you are.

    What do you think?
