  1. Hey Marc,

What were the songs like GNR Pre-AFD? Were there any differences to the songs back then/different melodies and guitar solos?

And did you ever see GnR with Tracii Guns, Hollywood Rose, Rapidfire or Road Crew? Anything you can remember or talk about from back then?

  2. I think what people have to remember is that without Izzy, GNR suddenly had no glue between Axl and Slash. You can argue that a nice subtle mix of the stuff we've seen since then is possible(IRS, Catcher, OMG and This I love with a bunch of Snakepit and a song or two from Beautiful Disease(Mezz and Put You Back) for a pretty good album, but axl caving would have led to severe drugs and depression, slash would have gone further down the drugs line, duff's pancreas would have exploded anyway, and who knows if anyone would have been there, and Izzy STILL would want nothing to do with GNR, because they were zombies.

And the biggest problem that no one sees is that Izzy didn't just play Guitar, he was the part of the band that made everyone a band. Arguably Slash and Duff were the engine, Axl the brain, but at thr root of the lineup, Izzy was the heart, and GNR just couldn't be what we wanted. Gilby was great, but the problem is that Gilby didn't do for the band what Izzy did, and because of that the band was doomed. Again, I want to stress that I love Gilby's playing and think he's a fantastic musician and writer, but it never felt like Gilby carried the weight in decision making Izzy did, and when Paul Tobias came in, it was because he wanted to have someone be as integral as Izzy was in the music, while Slash and Duff saw him as an outsider. That's the real final nail in GNR's "classic" line-up for lack of a better word.

  3. Reed added stuff all over UYI and wrote some of the better songs on CD. Pitman did some okay stuff, and wrote one good song and one of the lesser songs.

Meanwhile I have to give worst member former member to Matt Sorum. Worst drummer in GNR.

  4. mostly because nickelback got big by being the mainstream rehash of mainstream music. it's a parody of a parody.

as for the black keys and jack white, what they're doing is entertaining because they put a modern spin on it. it's the big riff with a new school attitude. maybe it's not your thing, but it's more original than maroon 5, nickelback, and fergie

  5. man of the hour by pear jam

once a rocker by the joe perry project

    someplace else by george harrison

    lucifer sam by pink floyd

the morning son by beady eye

the supernatural by john mayall's bluesbreakers

    thunderbird by quiet riot

    boot camp by soundgarden

one more cup of coffee by the white stripes

the title track from the world needs a hero by megadeth

  6. I think it's just down to the idea that most of the CD material came in 10+ years before the album came out. That said, I wish they'd give him some guitar solos on the record. Next record, I want to hear him get his own big solos man. He'd be the guy for it!

  7. There hasn't really been a credible new big scene since the 90's. The garage rock scene was a sign that so called rock musicians had run out of ideas, or they just weren't willing to push themselves further. I shutter when I hear retro garbage like Wolfmother or The Sheepdogs.

Garage Rock:The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Libertines, The Arctic Monkeys, etc. Real hooky, but stripped back in a way. It's been pretty credible thus far. The idea was that it was back to basics. It's a necessary element. It's what the roots movement(delaney and bonnie, the early 70's stones, derek and the dominoes) was about in comparison to the psychiadelic movement. It's what punk was to the rise in prog and late 70's metal. It's what grunge was to poison and metallica. Back to basics, just guitar drums and bass. It has been necessary.

For the new year, the next movement, i predict Florence + The Machine will lead the way. Instead of being retro, she mixed her influences with modern vibes, like in "what the water gave me" adding in gospel sounds, indie rock, and other genres. Cage The Elephant, The Roots, and Beady Eye are doing it more as they find their sound. I expect big things this year out of Beady Eye, Norah Jones, The Dead Weather, and soundgarden.

  8. I thought the question was going to be who would be fit to replace Axl. Based on the actual question, I'd like to see Fortus, Stinson, and Bumblefoot.

    As for the complaints:

    Jimmy McCulloch sang with Wings

    Eric Carr sang with Kiss

    Ben Shepard sings for Soundgarden

Bruce Johnston sings for the Beach Boys

    Tommy Shaw with Styx

Everyone got a chance singing in Thin Lizzy.

My point is that, everyone gets to sing on an album, so shaddap

  9. Heaven and Hell worked because both Dio and Vinnie Appice were strong live. I don't know if you can say the same about the 2 guys taking their place with Bill and Tony.

The two guys taking their place? Please....

Ozzy tours more than any incarnation has since he left! He's incredibly strong live. As for Bill Ward, i dunno, but on the other hand last time Sabbath reunited, they played the songs too damn fast. Maybe playing stuff a bit slower would help. I mean, original sabbath is about it being evil and slow. Creeping darkness.
