  1. good post. i have to say that i guess people haven't really had a chance to look back on all the stuff GnR did and praise their work and realize that no other band has done quite what they did for music. everyone has been caught up in the hype of chinese democracy, or when rumors about the album have died down, they lament axl's re-incarnation of the band.

the only thing i worry about is years after chinese democracy has been released, will people judge "guns n roses" by the original band's work AND the new band's material?

in essence, guns n' roses legacy has already been cast in stone. whatever the lineup ends up being for the chinese democracy "era", they are in effect an entirely different band with the same name and frontman as the old Gunners. the new band has to establish a reputation and legacy of their own, entirely independent of what we knew Guns n' Roses to be in the 80's and early 90's.

  2. i don't understand why people are so defensive about the solo in the middle of Better being part of the song.

wouldn't you still be happy if Better was actually the song with that solo edited out, and then there was a whole other song which included that solo?

at first, after hearing axl wailing and the lyrics in that section, i thought it could be a part from Prostitute, but apparently the lyrics do not match up.

so, if it's not a part taken from Prostitute, i don't know what other song it could be from. either way, whether it's supposed to be part of Better or not, the song fucking rocks with it, that much i know.

  3. "we had a horns section and pianos and all this other kind of crap, which we didn't necessarily want as a band, but it's something that Axl still wanted." - Slash

"I remember feelin a bit like, 'I didn't really sign up for this'. I was kind of hoping to join a badass rock n' roll band you know? what's with the piano?" - Matt

not really relevant to ANYTHING AT ALL actually, i just noticed someone said something about Slash being the one to introduce the pianos and horns and all for the UYI era.

  4. wow, thanks for bashing slash for making the music he enjoys playing. he's certainly not out to cater to everyone, and why should he? he's already been very successful, and doesn't have to go out and try to make a hit record. snakepit had some awesome stuff, but i have to admit, axl and slash need each other. they compliment each other perfectly, and neither will achieve the same mythic proportions that GnR did in the early 90's.

as for slash releasing any more statements on Chinese Democracy... wouldn't count on it, he chimed in with his two cents when asked about the project, just like everyone else.

i'm not waiting on anyone else's opinions or statements other than Axl or his management.

  5. i hate listening to these songs on my computer, it just doesn't do them justice.

i have to say though, 2:30 - 3:15 fucking absolutely rocks my face off, and axl is FUCKING WAILING

then 3:40 it starts to mellow out a little bit, beautiful bridge...

someone said it already, but this song includes a little bit of everything Axl has to offer

  6. i agree with everything you say, one thing though. despite the bad feedback these radio stations have supposedly gotten and shared, obviously not everyone hates the songs. if anything, people will be more shocked to hear the negative comments, it will create a bigger buzz, and hopefully people will want to hear the songs to judge for themselves.

although it's pretty obvious that people don't do that anymore. they'd rather do what everyone else is doing, which is why bubble gum, kill yourself pop music probably got so big. hopefully CD will change all that if nothing else.

  7. i think it's funny how people are passing judgement on the leaks. "these songs are terrible" "we waited 10 years for this garbage" etc... what we have are three very original, very different and very complex songs. TWAT is nearly comparable to songs like Estranged or Breakdown, but obviously tweaked to suit the new band's style. IRS is more in line with the edgy, hard rock of the old GnR. and Better... 'nuff said.

sure 10 years is a hell of a long time to wait for an album, but to people who say, "i can't believe i waited 10 years for THIS" and saying it's shit, TELL ME WHAT YOU EXPECTED. WHAT SOUND DID YOU WANT? perhaps you expected Axl to come back with an entirely different voice, and no guitars, maybe no music at all.

i just don't understand how people can completely dismiss an album before it's even been released. sounds like a bunch of "fans" who gave up on GnR a long time ago, and were already going to bash Chinese Democracy no matter what the music sounded like. that's fine, i'll just be enjoying the music while you're complaining. got my Appetite and UYI and some of Chinese Democracy on shuffle right now, and loving every bit of it.

  8. i said a couple days ago after i listened to Better that Axl's vocals sounded like vintage Axl, deeper/raspier, like the vocals could have been recorded in the 90's even as far back as when the band finally broke up. It's possible that his vocals were simply recorded over by the new band, as it does sound like the new band playing.

  9. sent an e-mail to Merck's secretary at Sanctuary to see if they'll clear up anything about leaks, time-frame of demos, album release, axl's feelings etc... probably won't reply to my insignificant e-mail, and probably wouldn't get a response til monday anyway. thought it was worth a shot...

  10. as much as i want to hear the new stuff, there's no reason not wait until an official release. granted we don't have a release date yet, but it's closer than ever. doesn't anyone understand that leaking a few songs at a time, or hearing songs and not knowing if they may or may not be studio cuts is cheapening the whole event? this is going to be the biggest thing in rock we've ever seen, and you're robbing the spotlight for yourselves by spreading this stuff. if there's any truth to a full album being released, this forum has to be shut down as well as any others.

  11. haven't heard Better

I.R.S. - I'm not entirely opposed to the drum machine, but it's just not something you would ever find in old gnr intro's. Brian is a very talented drummer from what I can tell, let him do something else in the beginning. Axl can still wail, but unlike the old stuff again, some of the vocals are near inaudible. That is something that will almost certainly be cleaned up for an album cut though.

  12. the lead guitar at the end of I.R.S. is definitely Buckethead playing fast with the finger-tapping and all. i'm glad buckethead is gone, although that is probably the best part of I.R.S. it might just be me, but there's something pretty powerful about Slash's emotional/bluesy guitar and Axl's vocals that Buckethead or Finck can't match. no knock on their ability, 'cause buckethead is very innovative and finck does some incredible solos.

  13. Taking actions to deliberately attempt to move up a CD release date is the worst thing people could do. If you can wait 12 years for a new album, surely you can all wait a month or two months, or as short or long as it takes for Axl to be comfortable releasing the band's work.

  14. this might be getting a little off-topic, but to me, a close listen to Contraband reveals a lot about how far Slash has come as a guitarist. Of course there are a few solos everyone knows (Slither), but his guitar work in each song is so varied and dynamic. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the album was dominated by in your face bass and drums with a lot of rythym guitar. I don't know where Slash stands with VR right now, but as for people saying he would never think about playing "new gnr" material... I think there are a few songs we've heard where he would absolutely tear it up.

  15. There are some strange things in the news. Talk about Sorum working with Camp Freddy on an album, and also saying that the next VR album could involve work with Pharrell (a "more danceable" album). Don't know how Slash would feel about that. The trial with Slash/Axl/Duff being moved back, possibly to accomodate CD related issues. Scott Weiland releasing another solo album, so maybe he's had time to work on that while other members (Slash) have been working on other projects (appearance on CD?) I'd love to see Izzy co-writing some songs or appearing too.

  16. I think Chinese Democracy is actually a title that is special to Axl. I don't remember exactly how the story goes, but "Chinese Democracy" is something that he saw etched in a wall, or written in blood when he was in China back in the early-mid 90's. Maybe someone knows the whole story behind it...

  17. I've thought that maybe the album name could be different when it finally comes out. Whether it's C.D. or something else, I think a lot of the die-hard fans will still always refer to it as C.D. Either way, when the album is released it's going to be the biggest thing to happen in the rock industry in our generation, and with what we've heard so far, the music is going to far eclipse the other stuff.
