  1. Tyler has a natural talent but also works very hard on his vocals; he sounds fantastic these days, in his 60's. He still has range and rasp, knows when to use head-tone etc...

I think Axl, in the Illusion era tour (having seen them live then), was hit or miss but forced his high end to stay in his 'chest-voice' making it more of a true scream, which is hard on the vocals and as we can see from concert footage of the time, his voice had nights it was simply blown out.

At the first or second NY show, he made a comment about almost blowing his voice out and Sebastian hooked him up with a local voice-coach.

Since then, there has been comments about Axl taking vocal warm-up and cool-down exercises very seriously.

It's a fact, age effects the voice and especially the top end, especially a raspy rock high-end vocal. I think he could have some years of touring left in him if he takes care of his voice, a hectic live schedule is the hardest thing on it, he needs good rest on and breaks from the road. For recordings, he could well have several albums left in him if he put them out on a regular basis.

Past that, he could adjust his vocals ala Robert Plant and sing for most of his life really, just not the same- and funny, I actually like Plant now better than his younger voice, Dreamland is when I started really enjoying that lower vocal that's raspy and relies on subtle changes. Axl could always head that direction.

I think keeping a vocal with the strength and range of Tyler is not in the cards. However, I do find the drastic changes odd compared to the natural loss over time from age. Not only does it drastically get worse but it drastically improves, all at the drop of the hat (seemingly).

  2. I would like to see a boxset with the rest of the CD era material. Then new recording with current band for a following CD. I would mind a live recording or DVD of some of the acoustic shows and of course live DVD from these last few years of touring. I would vote for taking the best recordings from different shows over just a single show.

  3. Axl has an off night and people think his voice is done and he should retire or other such comments... Wow, I saw him in Orlando last year and he sounded fantastic. (as did the band). We've already heard his voice was better on the second night. I think it's outlandish to comment on permanant vocal loss, retirement, yadda yadda...

As for rehearsing...nothing new there, right or wrong, people expect that to change after so many years? We know what to expect.

If he was sick, I can only hope he didn't push his voice too much as that can lead to real damage. I'll be interested to hear what he sounds like at the next shows.

  4. Dude prolly is insecure and checking his wifes FB. By blocking him on FB he prolly thinks you were up to no good. You prolly should have told him what actually happened so he could calm down. Anyhow, I wouldn't expect the police to do anything about it if you did report him. Remember no good deed goes unpunished ( is that the saying?).

Oh, sorry, left that out sent mesg following FB advice told him I was in no way harassing yadda yadda, that violent threats would be forwarded to authorities and tht I was blocking him. I pretty much followed the FB advice right down the line. But the guy contacts someone I know even after that? The police thing, as FB sees it, is not to have the police do anything but to have a complaint on file if the person does anything else. Sounds like a hassle to me but then... smarter people than me thought up the advice replies I am sure. Oh and the most horrible part, $150 concert ticket went unused. Wasn't there in time to scalp it, was rushing for the door to make it coming from out of town.

Oh, and between 2011 and 2012, so far, GNR and Roger Waters are the best two shows I've seen by far. both in the same venue...though I didn't dig Buck Cherry as opening.

  5. the only reason me and my girlfriend have fought in 1 year and a half of relationship was because of facebook, i hate it.

I can see that now myself and agree. Guy contacted a 'mutual friend' only reason I can think of is for info on where I am. This person told me this. Mut have done it from my friend list before I blocked. Still....let it go? Legally report it? Comment about it in general in my FB post? Actually, I was surprised, the whole crowed was a bit more....out there this time then at GNR show. Probably drug related (guy barking at people) This mob would never have been as polite in waiting for a second act.

  6. I am sure this is the wrong place but this is where my shortcut takes me and I've been here for years reading this place like it's a second family... so, I just wanted to post a quick thing asking for advice and then I'll delete ASAP (gotta turn to my gunners). I want to make sure I didn't act in anger.

I went to see Roger Waters do The Wall in Orlando Saturday, LAST MINUTE, guy gets called to work and have an open ticket (Me, wife, mother, sister, two friends, bass player are all going) So, I post on my FaceBook site that one's available then I send a personal message to, well, a LOT of people, says same thing- "Interested in Roger Waters Ticket for show tonight?"

Out of, the probably hundred people, one guy repliead with a threat because the message went to his wife (who must have been on my friend list. Most of FB contacts I don't know, just use it for band stuff) Anyway, the threat goes like this:

"I'm *******'s husband, and I'm only going to say this one time. If you ever fu**ing message my wife for anything again, you're in for it. Im telling you one time. Find someone else to harass. If you do it again, I'll hunt your a** down, and make you wish you'd have pick a different route. Forget whatever you thought."

While I was at show another one was sent before I had seen the first:

"Just so you you know. I'm dead serious. Don't fu** with me motherfu**er."

Now, I blocked these people and reported them to FB but I have two questions. First, FB suggests making a police report because the 'hunt you down' is a threat etc....ummmm...I really hate to escalate things into that and think FB just has to say that to cover the legal aspect... so would you bother with that?

Second, I left the following msg on my FB account, these people can not see this as they have been blocked but do you think it's appropriate to share this info?:

    "How low-brow people can be...

I sent out a mass message (last minute) to give a free ticket away, as everyone saw posted on my site ($150 ticket at that). My wife and I, and another couple of friends, enjoyed a GREAT show- some other cave-man replied with a death-threat msg. for contacting his wife offering a free ticket. Being nice, wow- sometimes it's just not worth it. MSG: "want ticket to Roger Waters Show Tonight?" - *Send to 100 people on FB list*...replies, No, I would rather kill you for such a nice gesture. To those low-brow people that are the reason for borders and bombs, I salute you. I hope you find both- and enjoy it. Thank God for the big ignore button on FB."

Having said all that, this is the same venue I saw GNR. When I saw them I had club level seats, which means no bathroom or drink lines and the look and feel of a posh hotel. The seats were on the side but sound was great. This show I had center seats second row, sound was also great, I think this is just a good concert venue (Orlando) but while the view was better (center) the level had pretty long waits for bathroom and drinks, actually missed half a song coming back from intermission while hitting restroom. Overall, Amway center is a great venue and GNR was great there.

Sorry for rant but what GNR fan doesn't have a little anger to spill? Needed some 'family' advice. will delete this soon - Thanks for any feedback.

  7. T2 is an obvious choice but so out front, maybe I should have said "besides T2"! Love the Step Brothers but, I had forgotten about that one, thanks for the vid! $1200 a week in voice lessons and she's flat, ha ha ha

  8. I was listening to various film bits with GNR music and I have to say, SCOM in the wrestler hits the highest emotional note:

"The only place I get hurt is out there"

"I'm here, I'm really here...what do you call that?"

    SCOM starts

    "Late"

Best emotional scene enhanced by a GNR song. I know an easier pick would be terminator but I like this one better, your vote/pick/thoughts?

  9. GnR, as a business, has been more active online but I do not see a big change in Axl personally being more plugged in. The pics, tweets, etc... have really helped I think. However, none of it is Axl one-on-one. which is fine, as long as current increased contact is at least approved by him. A new website (DJ should design it!) should already be a reality. It's not perfect but in the history of GnR this is the high-point for fan interaction ala live feeds, tweets, posts, even set changes per input from forum posts (Civil War) ?? POSSIBLY. Just a thought but for SURE at no point in the past, have they plugged in AT ALL.

  10. Duff will play with Axl and later in the GnR set to help the build-up. Still, some of the songs he is an easy-in for are played early on. It will be interesting to see if they move something like ycbm to a later spot... Also, I call now that you will see Izzy join Duff on a song this tour, probably patnce.

  11. Flame suit on but I like his voice better now than I did in the early 90's (saw the original band live then). Reason? He is more consistant from show-to show. I thnk he takes more care of his voice, has a coach, someting- but from one show to the next (forgetting the first couple "warm-up shows" which I wish he would do in practice rather than using gigs to warm up) ANYWAY, his voice is amazing, his pitch accuracy is way better than it was (a reason I am thinking vocal coach) His breathing isn't bad even after screams. I think this year he is ON his game.

Old school Axl was cool, but it was NOT consistant. 2006 was cool but he had a few where he had blown his voice out (rasp issues). 2011, he's on every night and it's working, you gotta hear it live. I think, when everyone looks back at his career... years from now, 2011 will be thought of as some of his golden years vocally.

Just my opinion but I have heard several versions of this band live over the years and this is what I am hearing.

  12. I am confused, I know he didn't want to do the 2001 tour but is it confirmed he really didn't want to do the Illusion tours in the earls 90's?!?!? That's crazy, that tour spanned years and held some of the original bands best shows! I must have missed something?

He didn't wanna tour in 1991. Axl didn't say anything about subsequent UYI tour years.

Wasn't that kind of all one tour from say... 90-93 ? I always thought of that as the illusion years. Sorry, not trying to be stupid... but I caught this remark as "during the most productive touring years of this band, I didn't want to be there" I may be off just because of a lack of knowledge...help me out.

  13. Regarding video, at this point, I don't see why they don't have someone else do a video and just sign off on it and let it hit youtube. I have seen the Catcher video, that was great(!) but it's not released. This is not the freakin 80's, we don't need a 10 million dollar video... it feels like it is held up because someone must be expecting something different than what todays market is about. I think they should take a hand-cam and video Axl in a hot-tub with a blow-up dolphin singing TWAT and call it a day.

  14. Axl states he takes care of his voice with warm-up and Cool-down (even more important in my opinion) - there are FEW people that have had a voice like Axl and I would venture to say NONE that have had long carereers!

This is my take, Axl sounds like a mix between Janis Joplin and Bon Scott- anyone agree? Even Janice knew she could not keep up the rasp in her voice and we hear Axl fighting that along the way. So, I think he does take care of his voice. I think he must have a vocal coach (any thoughts on this?) But to have that rasp at his age for three hours...I don't know, I get the feeling he knows the difference between head-tone and chest-tone. So, what do you think he does before a show as his warm up? I can see oxygen and tea and perhaps some vocal stretching...I don't see the pre-show time wasted on just siting there, I think he really is working his voice.

Okay. I don't think this is a big deal. If anything, I would like to have seen more from him all along. I caught the old crew (91-92) and caught the new crew (Orlando) and have to say, I had a blast both times, Axl sounds great now. I think that part of the issue is fans want GNR to be the biggest band in the world again and that won't happen because ROCK is not the biggest music anymore, sad but true. Still, I saw GNR and The Wall (Roger Waters) in the same year so I am happy. The money I spent this year on music made me happy, fuck everyone and everything else. sorry to be crass but you asked me to join in ;-p

  16. VH1 would be committing a crime if they took ANYTHING out of this interview. We can't have editing going on after they get Axl to finally sit down and talk for an hour. We've got to hear all of this

VH1 has as much in common with Rock as Dawson's Creek. I'm glad we get something but I have no respect for VH1 as any type of musical reporting outlet.

  17. Like I posted, he's basically done the same style of performing since 2006.

In 2001 he tried to basically do as he had done before...that didn't work so well. In 2002 he seemed pretty unmotivated, even though he was in shape.

He's doing the same kind of stage moves - more comfortable at it, though, since 2006.

I don't see your 'wow, he's learned something!' epiphany.

Gagarin, thanks for posting with a non-bot comment. I appreciate your opinion but I disagree and this is where I think this is a cool discussion. I DON'T think Axl moved around his vocals in 2006 or in 1992 for that matter. My opinion is that he's doing something new. I may be wrong and you can disagree but this is why I posted this. If I look to my memories of 2001-2001 Axl ran like crazy and missed full lines! Now, I see something more reserved in oder to create better vocals and it just doesn't seem to be per chance to me. I would love to compare video. People Think "Old Axl" was so much better and I think HORSESHIT, "Old Axl" was winded and missed lines all the freaking time. I think Axl is at the top of his game right now, and I do not think that is just due to a few good nights, per chance.

I will one up it. *DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK AXL HAS A VOCAL OR STAGE COACH*?
