  1. I’ve been following this band for a long time and the most fascinating but also most disappointing period was through the whole late 90s -early 2000 recording sessions and what exactly went on during this period. I remember at the time there is so much excitement about what was being done, who was being brought in, how great music may or may not be, etc. There was also the Spin magazine article, there was other interviews with Axl, but at the time there is no clear answer on what exactly was going on. I’m 41 years old now, with my two kids at home, and  I’m not quite keeping up with the band like I used to in my 20s. Maybe that’s also a sign of old age. LOL

I was a little late in discovering the leak madness we’ve had in recent weeks. As a result I am unsure how this all came to be. I understand there was a storage locker that may or may not have been purchased by a fan. However I can’t seem to find one good post that lays out exactly what has transpired the last few weeks. Can someone or some people reply to this post and maybe we can collect all the information that happened with respect to the leaks. At a minimum, we will have a diary on what’s gone on so far, which will allow us to look back in many years when the song leaks still haven’t been released officially … Just kidding… Sort of.  Some questions I have are - who sold the locker? Where was the selling of this locker advertised? Do we know who bought it? Is there only one person who has all the leaks? Is the person in possession of the leaks an active member of the GNR community? Etc. etc. Please, anyone with any answers or useful information, pictures, etc. please post below.

  2. The Vegas concert was cool and I’m happy I saw it but seeing it again on YouTube, Axls voice was clearly not what it was back in 1993. The rasp is totally not as powerful as what it was back then. Only in 2010 and with Axl/DC have we seen something similar. Do we think something happened to his voice or it truly is a case of a guy that went balls to the wall for 8 years (1985-1993) and who took a long break and never got it back to what it was?

Hi Andrew, I just read your post and bacause of that I watched the entire concert of HOB 2000. It was a blast! in the end Axl slams the mic and then he comes back and says "who caught that mic better keep it", just a shame you couldn't grab it. Thanks for your post. Cesar from Argentina.

Oh yeah it was made so much worse when I watched the video and then he said that. lol Glad my post got you to watch the concert though.  My post also got me to watch it.  Fun memories!

I believe I was 19 at the time, my brother was 23.  I was living in Raleigh, NC as I was going to college and my brother was in graduate school in NJ.  Looking back on it I think the flight was like $350 and then the tickets would be $150-$200.  If that was today I would have booked it in a heartbeat.  The sad part is that I had the money, I was just a college kid who was worried about spending that much money.

I said before its 'one of my biggest regrets' in my personal GNR history.  Its without a doubt my biggest regret.  No question.

That sucks.  Sorry dude. One of my biggest regrets with GNR is that I didn’t catch the damn mic when it bounced right into my chest. It literally spun right down my body and I couldn’t catch it. I consider myself reasonably coordinated. I should have made the damn catch!

When I was still a member of the GNR fan club I cannot tell you how many times I suggested that streaming access to old pro-shot videos/content would keep me as a subscriber and no doubt gain tons of new subscribers JUST for that in the process.  I suggested allowing paying fans to vote in a poll to decide which pro-shot was released next.  It constantly fell on deaf ears.  If that isn't low-hanging fruit then I don't know what is.

Back to the topic.  One of my biggest regrets in my GNR history was not flying out for this show.  My brother and I were so close to doing it and then we chickened out.  For me it was mostly about money.  Such a stupid move on my part.

How old were you at the time?  I am from Toronto and was 22 at the time. Crazy how quickly time has gone

Attended that show, flying in from Calgary. Knew what to expect as was at The Joint show at the HRH one year earlier. Was crazy how they made us stand in line for eight hours or more. We lined up before fans of the Goo Goo Dolls that started at 8PM, and Guns didn't go on until 4:30 AM . Security was adamant if Axl saw a camera, "he will leave!" I was actually surprised he showed up given the delay but he put on one of the best GNR shows I have seen (21 so far).

There was so much fear of cameras at the time. People were hiding their cameras in the flowers at Mandalay Bay!

Hey Andrew, I'm the Jan you mentioned in your post. My memories of that show are similar. I was 19 at the time and flew down from Canada as well. I ran a site called the GNR MP3 Exchange in the late 90's, and later gnrlive.com. In the weeks following the show I remember negotiating with the guy who bootlegged it, and the first MP3 of The Blues to appear on the internet debuted on my website. Some of the people you mentioned in your post were also instrumental in getting the proshot bootleg to surface a year or two ago.

    Hi Jan

i actually remember meeting you at Mandalay Bay.  Your site was awesome back in the day. I would argue it was the first site that actually posted mp3 files for people to download. You introduced me to Dead Flowers and got me into collecting bootlegs almost obsessively. I think you were from Alberta.

Im glad you posted. A lot has changed for us since then. I’m married with two kids now. How about you?

Please explain who was involved in getting the show released and how they did it?

Yes, its hard to explain. At the end of each bar, gis pinky hits, then his thumb. So hes playing octaves together, then seperately. Just look at his left hand and in sure youll see what i mean

OK thanks. I think I know what you're getting at.

For the right hand, I don't think he is doing octaves.  I can get the basic melody for the single notes.  Are the notes under it most likely thirds in your opinion?

  8. I'm relatively new to the piano and I am working my way though playing November Rain.  However, there has always been an Axl piano solo from 1993 that I really liked and would love to know how to play it:

I've tried to figure it out myself, but I'm finding it challenging, especially with him tuned down half a step.  Can anyone help me with the basics as to how he is playing each hand?  For example, is the left hand playing octaves only or something else?  How is the right hand melody done?

    Thanks in advance!

  9. OK, so despite me saying that we were going to skip it, we actually hit Lafayette on the way home.  We had stopped in Indianapolis in the early afternoon to take my 2 year daughter to their famous kids museum and then found ourselves with a little extra time on our hands and we decided to make the trip to Lafayette.  I didn't expect much and I wasn't disappointed. lol.  It was a nice small town though.  We ate at Wendy's.  :headbang:

Of course we saw Axl's old house and I believe found the Arni's pizza that Axl used to frequent.  Other than that we drove right out of town.  Not much to see, but happy I went.  Always had this stop on my list.

I know this is late, but after I graduated from Purdue I lived/worked in Lafayette for about ten years before I moved to Indianapolis a few years ago. I second what most people have said... Lafayette is a nothing town. Not worth the trip.

Though, due to my former job, I did become friend's with Izzy's mom. She is super, super nice. I've yet to meet Izzy, but he does spend quite a bit of time in Lafayette. About five or six years ago he spent almost the entire summer there. He even hung out in the restaurant in the building where I lived. I'm sure he's been there a lot more since then, too. His mom would always tell me what he was up to and even brought me a bunch of his picks one time.

I don't want to divulge everything I was told, but here are some highlights...
Izzy got kicked out of the Meijer off of 26 because he tried to bring his dogs in.
For Christmas one year, Izzy's mom got Axl a shirt that said "Here Comes Treble."
She told me Izzy was going over to Europe to play in 2006, so I felt kinda cool when he showed up and news outlets reported it because I already knew.

Most interesting, and I think I can say this now, is that she said they were talking reunion way back in 2006; not that is was being planned, but they were open to do it when the time came. Of course, this was before (I believe) the whole "Slash is a cancer" thing.

At my job I had access to the old Jeff yearbooks and scanned some pictures that had never been on the internet before. I posted these to Metal Sludge for their Exposed section many years ago, but these are my original scans. The picture with Izzy skateboarding says he's the one on the board, but the dude flashing the peace sign looks an awful lot like high school Izzy. One of my co-workers sat directly behind him in biology. She said he was quiet.

I did it two months ago- the house like in the video below, the west Jefferson high school, and pizza at Arni's.  Small blue collar town.  Fun to drive through and imagine Axl coming from here.  I've also been by his CA home.  It's up to you whether it's worth five minutes in front of his house.

The real address is in here..

I'm from Indianapolis, I promise you it is not worth your time to drive to Lafayette.  Its a small town with not much to see.  It looks exactly like 8 other small towns you'll drive through on your way to Nashville.  Pick one and picture trying to grow up there in a highly repressive religious environment (plus some added horrors from his dad), and you'll get a feel for what Axl's childhood must have been like.  The drive through Indiana is going to be long, flat, and boring.  Make sure your music is well sorted and you've got plenty of your favorite caffeinated drink (id go with that starbucks double shot thing personally).

As for Indianapolis, stay downtown and check out one of the new breweries that are supposed to be nice, they have some really nice restaurants downtown that are worth checking out (St Elmos, Mikado, Oceanaire, and probably a few more). After you leave downtown, its one giant suburb.  Absolutely do not consider staying the night anywhere else in Indiana (there are a few nice smaller areas, but they are most likely out of the way).

Thanks for this!  We decided to skip it since we are travelling with my two year old and three month old and to justify extra time in th car it would really need to be worth it and it didn't sounds like it was. We drove through Fort Wayne which was nice and then pretty much just stayed on the highway. We spent the night in scottsburg and as you say the drive has been fairly flat and repetitive. We hardly got to even see Indianapolis unfortunately. Kids slow you down. Lol. Today we are off to Louisville and then Nashville. On the way back we hope to get to some of those restaurants you suggested

All i can remember was that izzy and axl said it was boring there with nothing to do but smoke pot and get into trouble.

Axl used to go back every now and then to visit Arni pizza

Supposedly his old address was 2375 schuyler avenue

Thanks for the link!  Still not sure if it worth going. About 2 hours extra driving. As much as I would love to see his old town can't imagine staying there for more than 10 min. Lol
