  1. You don't have to sell millions of records to be big in terms of 'people will remember this band in 50 years', Look at the Sex Pistols: Just one decent record, but they will still be remembered by people as the band that made punk popular. Same goes for Nirwana...

The Backstreet Boys sold 75 million records. How big are they?

    True that.

  2. The White Stripes are good but they dont remind me anything of Guns N Roses.

Are we talking GNR copy cats here or bands that are similar in spirit? The White Stripes have revived respectable blues guitar rock this decade, much like GNR did in the 80s. They aren't just another band like all the other hard rock bands writing mediocre songs.

  3. This band from sweden, Snake of Eden say they're influenced by them, they don't sound much like them. They're pretty hot though!

    2058bo6.jpg

Wow!A current day band really digging the whole 80's metal look.

Uh that's like lame 80s hair band. Guns N Roses was far different.

  4. I think that Prince is one of those artists who never quite get the recognition that they deserve, no matter what they do. He really can do it all, from singing to producing to playing lord knows how many instruments (and playing them well). He's also similar to Bowie in that he is happy to move on a try different things, whereas Jackson is much more tried and true, with the only real difference being hiring the best current producers at the time for his albums. He also needs to get some new dance moves, because I heard that Bill Bailey is spinning in his grave.

Yes Prince is one of the true great musical artists of our times. MJ is an amazing pop star, and I love him, but there's really no comparison.

  5. In terms of bands sticking to their bluesy roots. I'd say the garage rock bands come closest. Particularly Jack White and the White Stripes. He made retro rock rooted in blues cool again.

  6. OMG people Kurt Cobain had nothing to do with it. It was all MTV. MTV knew that grunge was a market that could collapse at any moment. So that's why they decided to completely ditch rock in general and start pushing rap and r'n'b on people.

Who made grunge music big? Nirvana. Fuck that shit, who gives a fuck about glam/hair/trash metal lasting for 10+ years, it was great. It's really hard to listen to a bad song on MTV in the 80's. Cobain is a little piece of shit, he is nothing more then a little poser. God, I wish Axl would've just kicked his ass. Rock music is not dead because there is a lot of good undiscovered bands but thanks to the record companies and TV companies, they want grunge, why? Apparently it sells. Though critics seem to bash it a lot.

It only makes me think, what will happen to music when all our legendary bands die or just call it quits. Hopefully music would change before that ever happens. The mid/late 90's was a horrible era for music, pop and rap got famous.

Oh by the way, I believe Cobain is rotting because obviously, killing yourself is a major sin. Enough said.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. You're a moron. lol

Yeah and your a little kid who can't define the word talent nor claim what talent is. 80's>90's. I recommend a music class for you.

Cobain is a pussy. Here is why..

Stealing riffs from here and there,

    getting punked out by Axl.

    killing himself.

creating the worst genre in music history.

    acts like a mental douche.

Immature lyrics that only a 4 year old would come up with.

    Selling himself out.

So please fail miserably at trying to explain to me why Cobain isn't a pussy because the list is endless.

you recommend a music class? i go to berklee college of music, fuckhead, 90% of classes i take are music related.

and you disliking cobain is just an opinion, i don't care what you think of him, i used to dislike him but i eventually got really into nirvana. you probably listen to poison.

Dude, reading your posts is like comedy. You can't say disliking Cobain is an opinion, then say the 90's is greater than the 80's as if it's a fact, then assume he listens to Poison. A bit hypocritical if you ask me.

And I can understand from the point-of-view of a Metalhead as to why they feel "Cobain killed Rock" as the 80's was probably the most dominant decade for Metal (Thrash, Glam, and traditional Metal all ran rampant). I'm impartial, as I'm a huge fan of Grunge (actually all Grunge except Nirvana believe it or not lol) and I also love the 60's, 70's, and 80's music.

And who's going on about Glam lasting a decade? It was 6 years tops. I figure '85 is when it was becoming popular and '91 was when it was pretty dead.

And Rock definitely isn't dead (although people are taking the usage way too literally in the thread), I just personally feel there aren't very many outstanding bands out there... There's a few good ones, but to me I'd rather stick to my "dad-rock" as stacks so elegantly put it.

You have to admit that the Motley Crue guy does seem a little crazy. He mentions a music class and then talks about Cobain being a pussy. I don't think music classes cover what constitutes being a pussy. The truth is this dude obviously just has a grudge against Kurt Cobain. Disliking a band is understandable. Straight out loathing a band for what reasons truly not valid is just sort of retarded. I can understand hating a band if they raped and murdered your family and then burned down your house. But just because you dislike their music or their views?

Nirvana is famous because it changed the course of music and culture. Cobain wrote amazing songs that continue to stand the test of time. As time goes on Nirvana's influence is only becoming more evident. Shit, Lil Wayne, the most popular rapper in 2008 said Nirvana was his favorite rock band. So to all the haters, nobody gives a shit. Continue to cling to cultural irrelevancy.

Why did you get RS Immortals list?

It's my method of displaying how retarded everyone is on these boards. Looking at the musicians people deemed overrated, most of them are on this list. No one is saying Coldplay is overrated, but Bob Dylan? Bruce Springsteen? Seriously?

  9. It's an inevitability that digital downloads will take over completely. It's going to be a slow transition, but it's been happening for years already. Downloads are going to go nowhere but up. While CDs will continue to drop.

    My most hated:

Geddy Lee - I've never liked Rush, and can't fucking stand geddy's singer, its just so fucking annoying!

Kurt Cobain - Probably the most overrated human being ever to hold a guitar, let alone [attempt to] sing

Possibly the worst list of singers I've ever seen in my whole fucking life. Infact, the only singer worth anything at all on your list is Axl Rose. The rest are shit.

  11. lil' wayne: top five of all-time.

    not yet..

i can feel that. he still hasn't released an album i'd consider classic. c2 was close.

but da drought 3 and dedication 2 are some of the best mixtapes the game has seen.

dedication 3 was awful, though. hopefully he bounces back from that.

yeah, i feel the same. his mixtapes kill his studio albums. i remember a few years ago, i knew and liked lil wayne based off his mixtapes and no one i knew didn't even know who he was, and now a few years later everyone loves him mainly because of 'lollipop' he has a lot more songs that are better than that

I really liked Tha Carter 3, it just has some amazing beats. Beyond that though I even like the lyrics. I think they're really good, which is something I can't say I'd normally think about Lil Wayne.

  12. KTH is simply superior. Just accept it.

Love The Strokes. Is This It is a modern day classic.

Why? Because he uses a lot of fancy words to say absolutely nothing of value? Yeah, quite superior.

While I employ polysyllabic linguistic terminology and never, ever, use just one word where ten will do, I gratefully accept the rebuke. Just one anecdote to show I'm not the worst in this thing. A former and highly successful editor of Pitchfork Media was once asked, "What is your philosophy at Pitchfork?" And he said, "Our philosophy at Pitchfork is this.. music is interesting, and if you don't agree you can fuck off."

For someone critiquing the value of an individual's post, you have expressed nothing but banalities and, formally speaking, have yet to construct a single compelling sentence. "I like the Strokes." How provocative. You ride on a wave of clichés so worn, in fact, they actually approach a level of grotesquerie. Quite frankly, what makes your posts interesting? Where is your individual stamp? Estranged Reality brings an earnestness with every word, Dead Flower has his dry humor, and Wasted philosophically overanalyzes everything like he's Aristotle. You just suck; you're not even interesting enough to make me sick. I know it's the internet, but try and get yourself a personality..

The whole crybaby bitch routine was perfected long before you got a hard-on for me, little guy..

    -Kickingthehabit

Now that was a good post. One thing though, I don't recall ever saying I said anything of value. I say what I say and I don't give a shit what people think. If I get a reaction from someone, that's great but it's not what I'm here for. I don't necessarily crave getting reactions from people like you do. I'm not trying to be the next William Faulkner.

  13. can you type this stuff without laughing?

if i saw you in real life, i'd love to tell you to get real.

    You must be new?

When I grace this forum with one of my posts, I rehearse it for several minutes in a pseudo-British accent and casually asphyxiate myself with a lavender scented handkerchief. Please do not confuse me with a simple knuckle-dragging habitué who cannot make the effort to rise above wheelchair adjectives. Those egregious displays of imbecility have been the misfortune of this messageboard for far too many years..

The day I take intellectual cues from a peasant is the day I bludgeon myself to death with a Lil Wayne album. Now hop in your spaceship and make it rain elsewhere, Oliver Twist..

    If only it was funny.

  14. The Strokes are cool because they define the joyous abandon of playing music in a rock band. Their first record has a spontaneously realized quality that gives it this raw charm. They're always straddling the line between the abrasive and melodic, not giving much thought to anything in between. That's entirely to their credit, as they're one of the only bands of their generation to capture the positive spirit of rock n' roll. Who doesn't love a group of musicians who just plug in their instruments and give you three minutes of anthemic bliss? They seemed to have been stuck in limbo after the Impressions album came and went, so I'm relieved to know they're finally back in the studio to give it another go..

The synthy riff in Room on Fire's "12:51" is the best sounding thing to ever come out of a guitar..

Well it's certainly a well written opinion. I have to admit, it is a little over the top for an internet forum. Reads like something a journalist would write.

Oh shut it. I welcome those that take an extra few minutes to write a coherent and well thought out post.

I thought First Impressions of Earth was a little weaker than Room on Fire and Is This It, so i'm hoping the new album will be something special.

Shut it? I wasn't really negative in my post. I just said it is a little over the top for an internet forum.
