There was a time - Lacks the Buckethead solo but its still pretty cool, with the industrial loop Axl was going for. So, its just Paul and Robin on gutars on the first leak, maybe Axl in bits of it? I wish there was a bit on the finish album where you could safely say, "yep, thats Paul". Even live he was hard to pin point.
Catcher in the Rye - Besst example of Roy Thomas bAkers extensive rehaul of the project. Everything ended up being redone apart from the vocals, first the drums were re-recorded with Brain changing the feel of the track, Josh's drumming on this and IRS is very heavy, more glam and warmer. Then came re-doing the bass with different amps, adding more guitars when Robin came back, and Buckethead and Richard, although Bucets were errased after Bumblefoots guitars were added. More sound effects and orchestra overdubs followed, hey presto, completely different song. So strange.
IRS - There's two demos leaked of this, one has Buckethead and one is pre-Bucket. The first one has Josh on drums, the second has Brain aswell. Some nice spanish guitar nd drum machines on the intro to the one with Bucket/Brain, the two demos are fascinating to compare to eachother. The 2nd is stronger in my opinion, and has an additional 20 odd seconds. The first has that police siren noise which is cool, and its easier to work out who's doing what on guitars, eg the lead is Robin, the rhthym is Paul. The 2nd has different vocals, and features a Buckethead solo instead of Robin (listen to the killswitch at the very end of the solo).
Chinese Democracy - The demo of this is from around 2003-5. Pre-Bumblefoot but post 2002 as it had the extended intro and the guitar bits all over it. Has Brains cool drumming style, that double kick/hit thing going on. Actually prefer this to the album version, kicks fucking harder, less compressed and not too much guitar in the second verse.
The Blues - Well we dont have the original demo, but it would have had the drums in the intro with that guitar line that never seemed to fit. Instead we have the album version, over produced with TWO orchestras and that catchy bassline in the outro completely mixed down so you can barely hear it. But we do have an earlier demo circa 2004, pre-bumblefoot, featuring some more acoustic stuff in the opening verse. Whereas the the album has a very distinctive rhthym guitar from Bumblefoot, it actually kinda worries me how Bumblefoot did such simple things to the album giving it warmth and depth, common sense, yet none of those virtuoso guitarists thought of this?! o.O Strange. The demo has some different vocals in the outro and some extra drum/cymble crashes in the opening. Its ok, just a kinda of stripped down mix.
Better - Circa 2002, Better was first mentioned from in 2003 iirc when Axl spun some tracks at a strip club. This demo is easier to describe then the others. Take the album version, then remove Bumbles guitar overdubs, none of which were entirebly noticeble as it was only rhythm parts although if you listen around the 2 minute mark he's doing the melody on the guitar which is cool. Then there's the bridges, the drumming was replaced by the hard hitting Frank Ferrer along with the choruses, not quite sure why, seems like a waste of studio time. Then there's the second chorus which has different vocals, and some weird Buckethead techno thing going on. Much cooler. Not much else is that different to be honest.
Riad and the Bedouins - Bumblefoot replaced Buckets solo, not much else seems to be that different. The demo has a snippet pf weird vocals near the end. Thats about it, the Buckethead solo wasnt one of his best, alot of tapping, not very melodic, not that the Bumble solo was much better.
Oh My God - Axl claimed it was just a demo, i guess everything was back then in his eyes, but it does show you how quickly the band COULD work. It started life as a demo idea between Dizzy and paul in 1997, then forgotten about. In July 1999 the band finish it, Axl writes and adds vocals then its edited, mixed, mastered all within a few weeks. Sounds dreadfull, the quality, compared to the other songs on the sound track. Has some interesting parts, especially the pseudo disco bridge where you can really hear Pauls guitar work and the drum/bass combo is ball busting! Dj Ashba recently made that guitar line n the chorus so much more prominent and funky. No one quite knows who did the two solo's.
Silkworms - Apparently the chorus is gone, not that it was anything great, just that one line. Played at alternating speeds is 2001, the best version being the first time on NYE House of Blues, with the fierce synth opening and super fast aggressive metal behind Axl's venomous vocals. I imagine this'll sound so much better on the next album if there is one.
Is there a newer version of Oh My god floating around? Just curious as you mention Ashba...

Wow, very cool looking. Although wasn't monstrosity a title we heard before? Sounds kinda familiar.
Also any chance anyone could blow up the picture on the back of that cover? Looks like there's flames or something on there.

Then I guess most GnR fans are "that guy". I guess it probably has to do with the fact that at this stage in the game, having been to any GnR show is a baddge of honor, so it shows long-term dedication. Now, wearing a Hot-Topic or other store bought x band's shirt to a x band's show/concert is a no-no imo. Calling people out and publicly criticizing people for wearing one, however, is being an elitist douche. My ex thought it wasn't cool to buy a tour shirt with actual tour dates on it. Fuck that shit. I will show to people that I've seen the band before if I damn well please.
I guess I'm that guy because I wear a band shirt under my work shirt. 9/10 times that shirt is a band shirt. If I'm off, I want to be comfortable. A black cotton t shirt with a band logo and jeans are how I dress comfortably. Around here, if you like rock/metal, you wear band shirts. Not really a rule, just seems to be the way of things. I have 60+ of them and rotate them like you rotate stock.
Agreed! I wore my shirt from the 2002 tour to the Jersey show. Why? Because when i bought the shirt at Madison Square Garden i was 17 and wanted something to remember the concert by. Now that i'm about 8 years older i am still amazed at the fact that i have it and why not be proud of the fact that i have seen this band before and that i've been supporting them for a while?
To me it's like wearing an old school sports jersey. If you have a real one it means you've been a fan for a while and there is nothing in the 'rules' about that.

this one's better
This one was actually funny. And the Topic pages get shit views compared to the articles.
Agreed this one was hilarious

I've seen frank with the band twice now. First time in Hammerstein in 06 and this past thursday at the Izod Center. The first time i saw him i wasn't very impressed (i was also very drunk).
The other night i could not believe how fluid and powerful he was behind the drum set.
Outside of Brain he's my favorite GnR drummer.

According to the Izod Center Facebook page they are in the process of confirming Asking Alexandria as the opener... never heard of them but after a quick listen to a song on youtube they are terrible...
This is on AA's Facebook page:
I'm not really a fan, but Sebastian Bach plays them up as the next big thing in music.
2 things. First Bach is excited about oatmeal in the morning so i'm not going to trust his judgement. Second it does seem that while GnR picks openers that their fans may not particularly like (i go back to the last few times i've seen them with CKY, Buillet for my Valentine, etc.) but they do pick bands that are always going to be the 'next big thing' even going back to the 90s when Soundgarden was opening for them.

I know there's another thread, but this is the official one, as the other one is 4 pages of somewhat discussion and wondering who the opener is/will be
My first Guns N' Roses show! Who else is going?
I've been to this venue 2 other times, for Rammstein and Ozzy, and the sound isn't the greatest from what I remember, but it's not the worst.
I probably won't be doing setlist updates, as I'll be trying to focus on the show more since it's my first, but depending on how well my battery holds up, I'll try to upload pictures to my facebook throughout, and anyone who is friends with me on there can post them, just as long as it's just the pictures.

I will be there with my fiance. This is show number 3 for me and the first one for her. Funny to think that my first GnR show was in 2002 (i was in high school), second was in2006- 2007 i believe (in college). And this one will be after just completing my masters degree and getting engaged.

So, was it played last night?

Personally i like the theme park looking picture. I think it would make for great art work.
Not sure that bringing out some new stage props means anything though... Might just have to take it at face value, they're just stage props.
-
Nice, only about an hour away from my house. Might have to hit up this show as well
-
Would be interesting to hear Oh My God (last i remember it was reworked?)
-
Wow, thank you for posting that! Great quality
-
Yeah, i would love to hear a better version of it without some british guy groaning at the beginning...
-
I remember the story where Axl went into some strip club and played CD before it came out (not sure if it was real or not) but i recall someone that worked there mentioning there was a ballad type cover of something resembling an elton john song on it. I was really hoping that it was the studio version of sailing...
-
Personally i LOVED the song and wish Guns would play it more as Axl absolutely brings the song to a whole new level with just his voice (as opposed to Rod Stewart basically using a choir on his version)
-
You can win a delay at every GnR concert.
Everyone's a winner those nights.
Hilarious!
-
Anyone remember Chris Cornell's solo album Scream? Enough said
-
Agreed, been listening to this since it came out. Would love a better quality version without some british guy groaning at the beginning.

That comes out to $45 for a half hour. I guess it's worth it given the kind of top instruction you'd be getting but i was paying 18 for a half hour and had to cancel because i couldn't afford that.
Is this the kind of sound Axl was looking for?

So right off the bat i'm not a huge Depeche Mode fan. But i heard their new song today called Heaven. And i couldn't stop thinking is this the type of sound Axl wanted on some of the slower songs off CD? Slow with some piano/electronic tinges and dark lyrics? Of course the GnR stuff would have more guitar but i could certainly see him trying for something along those lines with stuff like Madagascar; something that sounds interesting and dark but more 'modern' with some nice touches of electronic.
I could certainly see GnR taking that formula and running with it, given enough work/focus was put into it.
