  1. Marc, thanks for such a candid response. It really is such a sad situation, Axl needs friends like you.

I'm sorry if I've missed something along the way or if this has already been covered, but you have mentioned before how Axl does't want to be reminded or have anything to do with the old band. How has he said this to you? I mean, did he actually say that he didn't want to talk about those days or did he get upset if anyone mentioned the original band? I ask because there is a fan video on YT where Axl jokingly talks about Slash (the story about Slash peeing in a girlfriend's bed) and he doesn't look upset at all. And in his interview with Jimmy Kimmel he (very fleetingly) touched on the old days.

I just wondered if Axl's anger/upset at you was more about your book coming out before CD and stealing his thunder, rather than the fact it's about the old days/old band.

  2. I don't understand why he wears his watch on his right arm when he's right handed - it just looks awkward.

I always wondered this too. It's uncomfortable.

I always thought it was a US thing. My US colleagues at work all wear their watches on their right arms.

  3. Honestly, I think Axl is so much better when he comes on later. Who gives a fuck about him being on time? I don't want him to be on time! It's so much more exciting experiencing the build-up and the moment when he does finally come on stage. OK, I admit, it can be hard on the old legs but, really, I don't want to see a GNR concert starting at 8.00 pm - who cares about work the next day, this is Axl for chrissakes!

But the problem with that is there are many people who do have to care about work the next day, or I have even seen people here who have talked about how bus times and schedules for arriving and getting back home was hard to do

I know people will say "well then don't go see GNR" but why not just have GNR start at a reasonable time like nearly every other band in the world? To me it is a win-win as opposed to bringing in this sort of conflict and controversy

I for one am glad GNR has been better regarding this issue

For me, I think deep down it feels like they're becoming mainstream if they start at a 'reasonable' time, and I would hate that! Also, I've seen quite a few bands in the last couple of years or so, including Slash, and not one of them started on time. OK, maybe not 2 hours late, but most were anything up to an hour late. I think the thing with Axl is that if he is allowed to come on at his time, then his performance will be so much better. At least, that's my experience.

  5. The club days will always be the special times for me. Watching my friends write songs because they wanted to and doing what ever it took to get to the next gig. Watching the crowds grow and the buzz on the street. It was very exciting to watch that all happen.

When MTV put WTTJ on heavy rotation, that was cool because I knew the world would catch on. The middle of 1988 was the next step watching them really take over when SCOM took off. Now they were a supper group on tour with Aerosmith. What more could you ask for?

The UYI tour was fun to see them do a headline tour and seeing Nov Rain complete and Estrange but things started to change when Izzy left. Yes they were bigger then ever but I knew things were going to be different when it came to putting songs together. The team work that was there in 1985/1986 was in trouble. Maybe if Slash Axl and Duff sat in the same room together and worked on stuff it could have worked. instead Slash put together a demo and gave it to Axl. Duff was not in good health and it seamed like Axl and Slash wanted different things at the time for the next record so it was just falling apart but it was fun for a while to watch them go that big starting from nothing.

That is such an interesting reply Marc, also tinged with some sadness. If only Izzy hadn't left when he did... if only Slash, Axl and Duff had sat in the same room together... if only Slash hadn't just sent Axl a demo... If only...! Why did they start to do things differently when they way they worked together for AFD worked so well? I suppose it's always the initial struggle that is the most exciting, when they still had that hunger? It must have been great for you to see it from the beginning.

  6. No offence, but I'm not even gonna pretend to care if there's a tour or not... the only reason they don't tour europe or north america is becase they'd only be selling out places that would hold an audience of 2000 people max... They know that in SA they'll do anything to watch this band. That's the only place were they can go and sell out 50 000 stadiums.... Shit's getting past ridiculous. I mean, if they did a new album and put it out, I'd understand, but ffs touring the same album for 13 years is just stupid...

In the UK last year, GNR were playing at venues which were pretty much sold out and held 15,000 - 20,000. The 02 in London holds 20,000 and the first night was a sell-out or almost. Then in Europe they played venues holding 10,000-15,000 plus they headlined at festivals like Graspop.
