I rarely ever post here, but this subject is bothering me. There are a lot of stories out there of Slash being a flat out dick to his fans. I get that it must be frustrating to get asked for pictures and autographs everywhere he goes, but at the same time it’s not ok to be a dick to his fans. I was going to buy one of the limited autographed CDs/LPs of Living The Dream and decided not to after reading this thread and other stories I’ve heard. As a big Slash fan, I’m not sure how to reconcile all of this.

The guy gets hassled all the time. The same questions, autographs, selfies, same questions, autographs, selfies.

    He is only human.

Axl said something similar about not knowing ultimately why Izzy didn’t want to be apart of the reunion. He said Izzy would say one thing then change the next day. It sounds like a full AFD5 reunion was initially proposed and Izzy wasn’t up for it. Izzy doesn’t want to be apart of a huge band and the demands necessary to perform at that level. His history proves that much. Everybody here always say Axl or Slash should do this or that for the fans, well maybe Izzy should have accepted his role “for the fans”. Izzy didn’t want to be there and his demand for equal loot was his passive aggressive way out of taking on the responsibility.

I think it's more than money, though, I think it's self-worth. I don't think Izzy feels valued by the band.

We don't know if the original idea was to have the AFD line-up, and if it was, what were the conversations like? Was Izzy even involved in those initial discussions?

Nowadays, with the deplorable QC in Gibson, you would have to be insane to pay more than $1000 for one of their guitars.

I don’t know if their Custom Shop is. A bit more strict with their QC, but I wouldn’t hold my breath considering how bad it has been for their regular lines of guitars.

Their custom shops are good. I haven't read any manufacturing complaints about them yet.

  4. I remember buying the original Metallica Binge and Purge boxset (which featured VHS tapes) back in the mid 90s for a colossal 70 quid. Pretty much all my pocket money. That was a lot of money for that box, but it was, in my opinion, one of the best because the concerts on the VHS tapes were AWESOME. Used to play it every morning before college. Sold it for 40 quid years later.

When I bought it I had to hide it behind the bins until the coast was clear to get it into the house without my folks noticing.

I certainly won't be buying this, much of the music is available on streaming sites.

  5. For anyone to label Guns music/lyrics as sexist doesn't understand the band and is taking the lyrics out of context. If you take Rocket Queen as an example, it shows the sleazy side in the first side and the love in the second side, expressing the duality in all of us.

    Guns = violence/anger. Roses = love.

Many journalists do not understand the subject they are writing about or care to take the time to do some research. The lyrics in the context of a musical arrangement tells us much more than the lyrics on a piece of paper.

I’m not disagreeing with that. That’s why this joke of a band should be called Guns N Roses inc. and fans should stop with all that “group of friends/buddies” bullshit.

GNR is not an active creative endeavour. It is a corporation, and their main purpose is making as much money as possible while spending as little as possible. Kinda like One Direction, the Jonas Brothers or whatever is the latest musical product out there (and I use the “musical” term very loosely).

Alan Niven suggested that that meeting Axl had with David Bowie in the late 80s changed everything. That's when Axl became much more aware of the business side of things.

I'm still staggered that Slash signed away the band to Axl in the mid 90s. Izzy, I understand why, but Slash signing it away was a bizarre move.

    Bollocks.

Axl had the nerve to say that Slash should have never been in Guns N' Roses to begin with. And also that he was not so great a guitarist as people think, or as much as he promotes himself.

Respect didn't necessarily abound in the Axl-Slash feud.

He also said that he was missing Slash when he was searching for another guitarist. All the negativity stems from a typical brother-brother love and hate. He was saying stuff to get at Slash because he cared and actually appreciated him. It's a typical relationship, people are cruel to each other, but have a secret admiration for one another, they just didn't want to admit it for a long time. I can only read into it from the press interviews, though.

Look how happy he is when Slash is playing, especially the Chinese material. He missed him a lot.

It really isn't hard. This is big business not family - nobody believes that juvenile horseshit for one minute. Stephen signs a contract to be a good boy, he gets his AFD set and he gets off the stool.

If he fucks up, once even, he's on the plane home.

    Very simple.

Axl doesn't have to interact with him at all.

Despite all he is and has been through, Stephen was and continues to be a great drummer whose style is much appreciated by those in the know and actually has a huge place in what made AFD sound great.

I believe that for history and humanity's sake and actually even bigger $$$$$, that the old line up should play their full body of work together in public again.

They can all hate on each other privately if they wish, but if they wanted to do it professionally it doesn't have to be that convoluted.

Anyway, look at how Axl's two decades of venom against Slash vanished like a burning hankie when they got sorted. No sense that can't be repeated with Stephen.

Yeah, from the outside it seems to be an easy fix, but we're not in the inside and don't understand each person's POV. We only see Steven playing the victim, so there is more to it than we will ever know.

The Slash v Axl drama was quite different from Steven's situation. I also think that they [Slash and Axl] always had professional respect for each other. I'm not seeing that with Steven and I think if they really wanted him in the band right now, he'd be there.

They know they can make a lot of money from the AFD line-up, but they are making lots of money now. If they don't have to, why should they?

As much as I'd love to see the AFD line-up, it's going to take some heavy lifting to make it happen. Fingers crossed.

I just don't get the hate for the guy at this stage. Put him on the stool, plug Iz in and give the crowd the original AFD line up for an hour then do whatever the fuck you want with blue haired women etc .

I don't know what is so hard about that. Let people have the Coca Cola for an hour instead of the 25 years of Pepsi.

    Very hard.

I don't get along with members of my family and I find it difficult to forgive for events that happened several years ago. I got to maintain my self-respect.

Although I'm not privy to the intricate details, it's clear that the Axl and Steven relationship is going to be difficult to mend based on quotes from Axl in the past.

The other day Fernando wrote that he doesn't see Marc Canter the way members here do.

Relationships, man, difficult to maintain. So yeah, it's very hard when you're in the inside.

I think that's probably the best way to look at it, save for maybe Axl's failings.  From a fan's perspective, yes, in the new music department there's not a lot there for us.  But Axl is who he is and he's doing what he feels is best for him.  We can disagree with his choices as fans, but ultimately it's his call.

    Totally agree.

It's up to Axl what he wants to do.

    I totally support that.

  11. Adler: "I love those songs, I love those records. I practice them here at home every day because I love them and I’m so proud of them and I’m proud of what the five of us did–we accomplished our dream exactly the way we wanted to. It didn’t end the way we wanted, or I wanted, but we did it our way. Like Frank Sinatra said, ‘I did it my way.”

It seems to me that the band don't want him around.

I like Steven, but sometimes I feel that he's living in another world and doesn't quite get it.

  12. Reading all the quotes, one thing stands out -- Slash and Duff's quotes were consistent about Steven. Based on that, I tend to side with them with regards to helping Steven. They did care about him and tried to help him as much as they could, but there does come a point when enough's enough.

There is the hypocrisy, the other guys were on substance abuse, but they also knew when they had to suspend activities to play. Steven didn't. That was the problem - I'm not sure Steven understood that and boy, he really does come across as naive. Even today.

Interesting to note that Slash and Duff would sign contracts that would ostracise themselves from the band a few years later and didn't Slash profess to not knowing exactly what he signed?

Uhhh,Slash is 50 something now so yeah, like most humans I'd expect him to be different than he was 30 years ago. If you want to chat with Frank,I'm sure he'd oblige you. One of the most famous guitarists in the world just isn't going to stand outside of his hotel and engage nerdy ass fans in a discussion about unreleased songs.

In the past I have had long chats with Duff and Matt. Both were cool as fuck. But I'm sure there are days they don't want to deal with fans and that's their choice. I'll be 40 in a few years . I could give two fucks about social media likes,I do this because it's fun for me and has allowed me to meet people from all over the world.

I have no interest in meeting Slash despite being fan of his work, I just want to see him play guitar. I was discussing the fact that fans hounding these guys for photos and autographs, sometimes saying something nice is probably a better way to engage when they do come out to greet fans. I can imagine it being tiresome, though, to talk to complete strangers. I wouldn't approach them, let them be, they only have to entertain on the stage, the rest is a load of bollocks.

  14. How about having a conversation with Slash instead of hounding him for photos and autographs? You'd be surprised. I don't get the mentality of waiting for autographs and photo opps, but if you strike up a conversation and introduce yourself, maybe they'd be more happy to meet fans.

GNR, back in the day, were not nice guys, like a poster wrote above, they were difficult, loud, obnoxious, used women, women used them, drugged out. Not sure why fans expect them to be nice? They are human beings!!
