I was at the 2nd Chicago show, however, based on the feedback I got from the people I was waiting with, the situation for the GA lines at the first show was the exact same.
I usually get the GA shows extremely early so I can get a spot on the rail. Based on my research here, I decided to get there around 2 o'clock (doors at 6PM) about 5-7 hours after I normally would. When I arrived at 2:15 I was very worried I was late. However, when I found the 'line', I found out I was the 7th person there....7th. I didn't even think I was in the right place. There were like 10 entry lines. So, I was still 1st in a line.
People didn't' really even start getting there until about an hour and half before and even then, I would say it wasn't until about 50 minutes before doors did the lines start to get full. Once again, this was the same story on Friday night to a SOLD OUT Soldier field, per the information from the first 6 people I was waiting with....for 2 hours without anyone else there.
To add to this, even after being down in the PIT at my 'coveted' rail spot, you probably could have gotten in there 45 minutes to an hour later and still been damn close/had a rail spot at one of the ends. Most people were getting beer or merch or just standing around drinking.
Obviously there's no way to verify if every venue will be like this, but from all the research I've done from kind folks on here, it seems that since the pit is so small...it's not as big of a deal.
Also, to review the actual pit experience. I've never had so much breathing room/lack of people pushing on me in a pit in my life. I was in the same spot at the end that I started in, and everyone was very respectable and just enjoyed the show and didn't try to push people out of the way and butt-in and stuff.
Really, every spot in the Pit is a great spot. In fact, there's something to be said for just hanging out on the back rails drinking your beer. But, I like the intimacy of the front, personally.

I have no idea how all of you people who are waiting on the line to go in the pit do it, I mean you are getting their early and you are not leaving your spot until midnight tonight? don't you have to take a piss?
I don't. Once I got my spot I don't leave.
Actually, it's never been a problem. Weird maybe?

Also Friday was his 60th Gn'R show since December 29th, 2001!
any idea what entry gate they are lined up at? I'll be there in 40 mintues! I'll be wearing a red bandana Axl style. and a Appetite for Democracy shirt!
See you all soon!

Last time that I am going to reply to my own message. First of all, it was really amazing yesterday, the adrenaline beat my 7 hour jet lag (today is a different story though) and definitely looking forward to tomorrow's show with better (i.e. GA PIT) tickets.
Just met Richard somewhere on the Magnificent Mile while I was doing some shopping and walking. Thanked him for the good show yesterday, and when I answered to his question where I was coming from and that I was only in Chicago for the two GNR shows, he and his wife were genuinely surprised that some people do things like that. Took a picture and with a "we'll definitely be in Europe next year", we shook hands and said goodbye... Saw Frank shortly thereafter and spoke briefly as well. Both really nice guys!
Did they say where they were going to tonight?!!!?? I'm up for stalking.... ;-)

I should not have posted this during the end of the show....bad time to ask questions when we are all hyped!!! So I'm doing it again!
Thanks everyone for posting awesome information. I'm just sitting here getting pump AF for Sunday.
Can anyone who went to the show last night answer a few questions?
What entry gate do you go to, to wait in line for GA PIT entry?Doors at 6:30? Would 2:00 PM be early enough to get there and get a decent rail spot you think? Judging by the pics of when AIC started, I don't know how that wouldn't be early enough.
Do they let you bring in closed bottles of water?
Thanks! -

I don't think the view is that obstructed if you're along the rail....get behind people and all bets are off. I think Duff's side might actually be better if you get along the catwalk. They all move around a ton. At the show I was at, they spent quite a bit of time in and around the catwalk.
In Chicago, which ticket (PIT1 or PIT2) didn't even matter. It was open; I had slash's side, but when I arrived I could have just went over to Duff's. I'm sure it will differ between venues.
I experienced no moshing at all.
Yes, Merch outside the venue, multiple places. They should have lithos.
