Yeah agreed. Do an outliers poll comprised of:

    Sympathy for the Devil

    OMG

    SoYL

    Hard Skool

    ABSURD

    Heartbreak Hotel

    Free Fallin'

    Salt of the Earth

    Dead Flowers

    Sailing

    I Feel Good

    Wichita Lineman

    Black Hole Sun

    Dust in the Wind

    It Tastes Good etc etc

    And an AXL/DC poll.

    P.S. Riad

Live Covers and demos should not be included, because non of these are offical releases. Some of the Songs you mentioned where not even Player by the whole Band.

But the 5 offical Songs, Sympathy,  shadow, OMG, absured and Hard skool should get Theorie own litten vote.

  2. I am a huge fan of their "deep cuts" and prefer stuff like garden or breakdown over NR or SCOM.

Because of that, I also really tried to enjoy don't damn me. But unfortunately, I still find it pretty uninteresting.

I think it lacks variety. It's basically one riff (which is ok, but not great for GNR standards) that more or less repeats through out the whole song. And this  riff is not only played by the guitars and bass, but the vocals also imitate the riff. That's why melodic - wise, it's not very exciting.

Also, it lacks dynamics, the verse, pre-chorus and chorus are all basically the same tempo, intensity and rhythm.

I agree that the solo is pretty good and I also like the outro part after. But for the bigger part it's just an okay song to me.

But that's just my opinion, I respect that for a lot of other people it's on of their favorite.

  3. Whenever I review the albums, especially when I compare both UYI, I always feel that the track list of UYI 2 feels kinda strange, especially the order of the songs. For example

    1. Why does it open with Civil War? It's a good song, but no album opener. It's slow, long, builds up slowly and for an GNR song it's one of the more complicated /serious songs. Something like pretty tied up would have worked better imo.

    2. Why do they hide the hits at the back of the album? When listening to the album, I always feel it's complete after Estranged. Then suddenly, YCBM kicks in, and then don't cry basically closes the album (which even with alt lyrics is basically the same song as the succesful single). These two song don't seem to really serve a purpose on the album flow.

    3. There is a big "gap" in the middle of the album. While on UYI, November Rain is kind of the center / highlight, whereas on UYI, between tracks 5-10, there is no major hit. Even though some of these songs are my personal favorites, it feels kind of odd and makes it harder to get into the album than it needs to be. All the singles /hits are placed within the first or last four songs.

    4. Additionaly, songs like GITR or shotgun blues feel completely out of order and maybe would have worked better on UYI 1.

Does anybody feels similar about the track list of UYI 2?

I feel overall, due to these points UYI 1 works better as an album on itself.

Still, I believe that the individual songs on UYI 2 are better, hence it's still my favorite of these two (with appetite being on number 1).

It would be much better to vote UYI I and UYI II together. As I already wrote, we would put together the best UYI album and the results would stay the same. It would also be even more interesting.

Maybe after all albums are done, we should do another vote with the top 3 songs of each album.

  5. Pretty fun game, so far, most my votes were "correct".

This one is tougher, but song writing wise, it's so easy is the most "simple" one, so it gets my vote (although it's great song).

For the Finale I hope for jungle vs. Rocket queen.

And afterwards you should continue with the other albums, would be interesting.

Does anybody remember which songs where on the Alt. Setlist? Since two of them already have been played, it doesn't seem unlikley that more will appear on the regular setlist.

Nevermind, I found them on setlist.fm; according to that source the songs were:

"Yesterdays", "Used To Love Her", "Black Hole Sun", "Don't Cry", "The Seeker", "My Michelle", "Out Ta Get Me", "Sorry", "Dead Horse", "Locomotive", "Hard School", "Prostitute", "There Was A Time", "Catcher In The Rye", "So Fine", "Benny & The Jets" and "Madagascar"

Most of them were or are played quite regulary, so the last really interesting songs would be Hardschool and so Fine; although I would also really enjoy Outta get me, My Michelle and CITR.

  7. If you had the chance to re-select the songs on the Chinese Democracy album, how would it look? You can use any of the original 14 songs (+OMG), leaked alternative versions of these songs or unreleased songs. Even the instrumentals, although I would find it hard to judge them without lyrics / melody. Just make sure you end up with 14 songs again.

(I am still undecided but would like to hear your ideas!)

  8. Hearing the Going Down Version with Axl on backing vocals reminded me on how good Axl is at doing "Co-Vocals", he always adds a special touch to a duet. That made me wonder, how many (recorded) duets of Axl are there (apart from the UYI Songs where Izzy or Duff do lead vocals)?

Google gave me that list, where I knew most songs from. Plus I can think of the Axl / Steven Tyler live version of Mama kin.

Are there any other guest appearances you know of?

I was listening to the bass track from My Michelle today - presumably taken from the Blu Ray - and noticed there's a synth line for about 20 seconds that comes in at 2 mins 28. It's not loud enough to be heard in the full song (at least to my ears anyway).

Made me wonder what else people had found that's buried in the AFD mix but can now be heard thanks to the Blu Ray?

Pretty cool, I never heard that before!

  10. I discovered UYI way before AFD. It were those two album that made me curious of that band.

So while I agree that AFD is the better (and my favorite) album, w/o songs like Coma, Estranged, Locomotive, Breakdown, etc. I would not be a GnR fan.

I love the songs and most of the mix, don't see whats wrong with e.g. Coma or Pretty Tied up. (I would agree that NR sounds a bit cheesy, though)

I also do love all of the piano work in songs like Yesterdays, 14 Years, Pretty Tied up, don't matter if its Axl or Dizzy.

Only thing I dislike is the order of songs on UYI II. For me, the "storyline" of the album, starting with the slow Civil War, putting YCBM and DC II at the end and closing with My World, is a complete mess. IMO they should have tried to "mirror" the song order of UYI, e.g. open with Pretty Tied up, place DC & the "hit" YCBM earlier, have Civil War in the middle, close with Estranged.
