  1. I doubt he's making much cash from this. The SA Rand/ Dollar exchange is shit, and those tickets are cheap.

Those musicians are nobodies. They played with some ok and some mediocre local artists. I wish South African bands were better, but unfortunately, so many of them are either terrrrrrible or so flat and boring you can't believe you paid money to watch them.

This whole show is actually embarrassing on so many levels!

  2. It’s probably best to practice some stoicism here. Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed. Remove hope and you remove suffering.

We didn’t expect that Troubadour show, we didn’t expect the shows to continue with Axl’s broken leg, we didn’t expect AXL/DC, we didn’t expect SOYL or that ridiculous AFD box set, we definitely didn’t expect this tour to last nearly 3yrs and be as successful as it was.

I don’t think GnR expected any of the above either.

That said, even though the tour has run it’s course, I can’t help but feel emotional about it. I can’t help hoping for more unexpected things.

  3. He hasn't wri†ten his magnum opus. There is no such thing.
Each song, each album is is a book of memories (although with his iconic status, time doesn't always fade the pages). A scrapbook of certain times and certain lives. The nature of creativity, is that you'll never stop creating until the day you die.

You've pretty much heard everything then....I really like GVF as well myself, but they have basically released 2 EP's to this date, with the 2nd EP containing like 3 of the 4 songs from the first EP (Black Smoke Rising-EP and From the Fires-EP) All together, they have less than 10 original songs released to this point...but hey....that's much more original content than GnR has put over the last 10 years.

I will be happy with a new, full length GVF album, as well as a new, full length GnR album, no matter what the majority of the content is.

I'd never listened to GVF until very recently and they are quite enjoyable as background music. Vocals very Plant, but also they sound A LOT like Wolfmother.

  5. Amongst other genres, Rock, punk, and hip hop is eternal. It changes, comes back and changes again. I see young teens randomly getting into Black Sabbath, Bad Brains, Zeppelin, Twisted Sister, The Prodigy. In an age where access to music and information no longer follows a linear path, I don't think shocking your parents is the goal anymore. In fact it's more a reflection of whether your parents brought you up correctly listening to good music and none of this shitty Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande nonsense! :P

Whats up with this thread?

There are the Americas. North America is the Northern part. Using the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as a reference North America is Canada, USA, Mexico.

Rock n Roll is birthed from black culture. It is also informed by Country- Western and folk music music which is primarily thought of as being white music, although it too had other influences and many cowboys where black people - hence the "boy" part of cowboy a common racial slur back in those days. The Folk and Western tradition included black artists like Leadbelly for instance. Ray Charles having a large country aspect to his sound is a modern example.

Edit: Fuck me, apparently we're all 'correct' about the various nations that make up North America!! Depending on where you live and were educated, you will have been taught one of the various versions we've all listed. Some UN definitions only include Canada and US, but other UN docs acknowledge all the way down through (what was once?) Central America. It seems very convoluted. Crazy.

This thread has clearly become educational ;)

Let's not forget, the origins of blues came from African slaves and their descendants who brought with them the music of their homelands in north and west Africa. In fact so much modern music genres seen as "white" originated from African people, most often it was made popular by white people who copied black musicians (see Elvis Presley).

Just outside my home, Johannesburg, is a place called Maropeng which is known as The Cradle of Humankind. It is literally the world's richest human fossil site. About 40% of all human ancestor fossils have been found here.

So Africa is not really the "dark continent". In fact there were once great and advanced ancient cities here that were wiped out and desecrated by European conquerors...

But anyway... back to the original post: yes us (90% white) South Africans are super excited that GnR are coming here! We missed out on having any bands play here in the 80s and early 90s thanks to sanctions and apartheid. In fact, the only way to hear Appetite for Destruction at the time was through a friend of a friend who's friend had been overseas and got the tape. Most often that was a whole bunch of years after 1987.

Aaand for interest's sake, Heavy Metal music in Botswana has become bigger than ever! https://edition.cnn.com/2014/02/13/world/africa/africa-botswana-metal-heads/index.html :headbang:

Oh I see, sorry, I just don't know much about the city. It is exotic to me though because it's located in a continent that I had never visited but always curious about it.

But I know what you mean!

I guess it is for you :D Lots of people who don't know much about South Arica think we have pet lions, ride hippos to work and have giraffes that live in our garden. That would be kinda cool if it were true. But no, Johannesburg looks a bit like Los Angeles in parts. It has it's own unique vibe, but otherwise it's just a big city like any other.
