The guy was pretty unique for his day and he had chops.

I would never deny this. But I'm not a fan of his playing style because it sounds 'artificial' and mechanical to me rather than emotive. I think Slash has a much better sense of melody than RR, because his approach to the guitar is more 'natural' and emotive to my ears.

  2. Eddie easily. He was much more innovative and influential.

I think Randy is overpraised because he died young (as it's a case with many musicians). And RR was more derivative than innovative, because that playing style was already established by guys like Blackmore, Schenker and Uli Jon Roth (who all get less credit than him) plus Eddie.

  3. GnR gets my vote easily. Personal preference.

I like Metallica but I love GnR. Iron Maiden is probably the only 80's band I would rank above Gunners.

And I have to agree that Metallica was stylistically more original, groundbreaking and influential band than Guns.

  4. Van Halen is a legendary American rock band for a reason. Their debut was very original and innovative hard rock.

But I prefer GnR and I think they were better songwriters but VH had superior musicianship mostly due to Eddie.
