  1. I like Differences a lot I really like the riffs and the guitar solo is well fitting.

I don't like Puzzles very much as I think the intro sounds too similar to someone practising their scales and I don't like the vocals as much as in this song. I also feel it drags on a bit too long

I like The Occupant too I think the intro riff is very strong and the solo is good it reminds me a bit of Slash and Brian May. I think the drums are interesting in this song.

I think Left Alone is quite good too I prefer Differences and The Occupant though.

Overall my favourites are The Occupant and Differences with a slight preference for The Occupant. I really like the sound of your band though!

  2. done. dunno if i fucked up or not though  it tunes fine, plays fine, i just get the feeling like...the strings are too high? marginally? fuckin works though, tunes up and all of that...just the strings feel a litttttttttttttle high. when i bend on the motherfuckers i feel like im pushing my fingertips under the string above  i've fucked it up haven't i? i actually did tighten it a bit (just like a quarter turn or two while it was tuned up. i WAS doing it the other way but im lookin at the motherfucker and thinkin how the fuck am i supposed to know if the shits makin any difference unless the things tuned and tight and all that..

still, plays alright as far as my extremely novice ear can tell...just the strings feel a teensy bit high...maybe i should loosen em up and give it another few turns or somethin? :)

I think that's a problem with the action. Does it seem the distance between the string and the fret is larger the higher up the guitar neck you go? If so you can adjust it by opening the back of your guitar and tightening the coils that look like spring - be careful not to over tighten or it can really ruin your neck.

  3. Honestly i think theres potential , however the song structure needs some good tweaking , and the vocals feel like, there separated from the mix , better mixing could do , the songs could do with some simplification , youd be surprised how far a song with a simple structure and a catchy melody(vocal , guitar) could go .

    good example - shinedown-save me

Thanks, agree structure could change but don't agree the mix is bad at all. The guy who mixed it has worked with top top people.

    Any other feedback?

    Anyone?

  5. I just find a new way to get one of those, so can someone please tell me how the sizes of these are? I'm wondering if I should get L or XL, I'm pretty slim and 183cm...

So, anyone who's got one of 'em, how do they fit?

Sorry for the double-post, but I wanna order as fast as I can, someone surely can answer this question for me?!

Depends how you want it. If you want really baggy then XL but I think L would fit your build.

  6. Larren Harris? As in steve's daughter? I thought she would have been good. Personally I'm sick of the old and it's not asif the new album is bad its def one of their strongest. I say stop catrering to the fanboys and play new material we dont have much longer to have that oppertunity.

She's not a bad singer, but it's her band that I didn't like. The guitarist was really annoying and I didn't like his style. Oh well they only play a 20 minute or so set you won't have to put up with them for long.

  7. Im really pumped for tomorrow because I'm going to be seeing one of the best bands in the whole for the 2nd time tomorrow In dublin. They are going to play all of their new album live then 5 or 6 more. The bad thing is that trivium is opening for them( also my 2nd time witnessing them in their shitacity). Are there any other gigs coming up soon that anyone is looking forward to?

I saw Maiden in Birmingham on the 12th a week ago today. They were pretty good but I much prefered their old songs after they finished playing the WHOLE of their new album.

Trivium were pretty good I thought though again I don't like the stuff from their new album as much as Ascendacy. The first band was just terrible it was like Lauren Harris or something I thought they really sucked.

  8. speaking solely as a musician, and more specifically a guitarist, buckethead is the best guitarist gn'r has ever had. i won't argue who was best for gn'r, that's simply a matter of opinion. but for any person to ever say anything negative about bucket's playing is absolutely ignorant.

we all enjoyed slash, i mean, come on, we're all here posting on the internet about 20 year old songs when there's literally thousands of more productive things we could be doing. but we enjoy gn'r. we like slash. but from a technical standpoint, slash as a player really isn't that much to write home about. 95% of his repitiore is minor pentatonics. surely he knows more, i've heard him break into a aeleon mode a couple times. but if he knew more, he never showed it. and i guess he plays pretty fast, but in the world of rock n' roll, he's not Really fast. he wrote a couple good songs, but the bulk of why people like slash was penned by izzy. slash is good, no doubt. he's no where near the best. perhaps he's you're favorite, and that's cool. that's opinion. he's one of my favorite's too. but i wouldn't call him an amazing player in almost any sense of the word. he fit the suit for a sleaze rock band.

buckethead on the other hand is probably one of the top 5 greatest guitarists since the guitar was invented. almost no where else in to world do you find anyone capable of 7 finger tapping. he sweeps better than malmsteen. he's got finger style like chet. he's got over 20 albums of quality intrumentals under his belt. and if that wasn't enough, he takes a blues rock rager like nightrain, (and this blows my mind) burns on melodic minor and diminished scales. anyone who took 7th grade music theory knows why this is just too surreal. he's a technical matermind. a master composer. his playing is like a tornado taking a highway. totally out of control, insane, but 100% by the book. truly one of the all time greats. ofcourse any one after him is going to be a downgrade. and nobody likes a name dropper, but he's one heck of a nice guy.

i have no major problem with bumblefoot. he's a new generation noise burner. and that's cool. it's his thing. and i wouldn't be surprised if to the untrained ear, his spacey sounding solos don't sound unlike bucket's. i can understand him as a replacement. though sometimes, i feel like axl is trying to pull a fast one on me. kind of pulling the old switcheroo with shredders to see if anyone notices the difference. i did. but i think most people are so cought up on neither of them being slash, they don't even notice.

robin is a fairly solid player. if it were my call, i'd have pushed him down to rythm guitar though. he doesn't seem to have a solid enough comprehension of blues style to handle a lead spot in guns n roses. the majority of his playing problems comes from bending too slow. i really question if anyone has pointed this out to him. he bends to slow, then rushes the next couple notes, and it totally blows the feel of the song. i think if he worked on that small area, his playing would improve many times over.

and those of you that are hating on buckethead for the way he dresses, and his gimmick; how come a chicken bucket is lame, but wearing a top hat and a boa constrictor and naming yourself 'slash' is ok? our dear freind saul had a gimmick too, so it's best to take inventory before casting stones.

and on a personal note, i really liked how gn'r looked in '02. with robin all gothed out, axl rose at the height of his wiggerdom, and the icing on the cake: buckethead. the band looked like a total freak show, and i think it worked so well for them. the band was scarey, wierd, new. take this imaginary scenario for instance...

dude a: who or what the f*ck is that?!?

dude b: that right there is guns n' f*cking roses.

I agree with almost all of this post. The only bit I think is a bit besides the point is how fast BBF or Buckethead can play. A robot could play as many notes a second as them, playing guitar isn't about how fast you can play!

Apart from that I agree I think Buckethead is the best guitarist GNR ever had, not because of speed, but because the way he can incorporate such melody and feeling into each song, and adding the fast bits is impressive to a lot of people. Bumbelfoot just hasn't got that feel. Buckethead is the best, then Slash, then Bumblefoot in my opinion.

  9. the best CD is gonne be Chinese Democracy

Man don't mean to be point picking. BUT the amount of times you have said that about Chi Dem coming out this year is ridiculous especially as we have only 2 tuesdays left in the year. I think it's time to face it's not coming out this year and you can go make some excuse or go tell me how it will come out next year and it's all part of some plan Axl has.

    Anyway on topic:

    Best CD: Ascendacy, Trivium

Best DVD: Not sure if you count bootleg copies maybe Borat

  10. Be careful with time allocation, be sure not too rehearse or be tempted to write and perform anything new in the studio, it will end up chewing up so much time youll quickly run out of cash.

    hehe! :) I second that! :)

Haha, no it's okay we know exactly what we are playing, though knowing it well is a different matter....

  11. What do you mean by a PRO studio when you say PRO?

see, the problem here is that the studio isn´t more PRO than the crew in the joint.

A creative and GOOD producer can work magic on a band with a good engineer onboard. Unless he´s an engineer himself. Some producers do everything them selves. some opt for different ppl to do different stuff. such as mixing and engineering.

If the guy who´s miking your drums and and helping you to get the most out of your vocals don´t know what he is doing. Then you are FUCKED. Doesn´t matter if the studio is worth 500000 billion dollars.

You can have all the Lexicon, SSL and NEVE magic in the world. But nowdays it doesn´t always matter.

Like the dude posted, keep things simple.

Talk with the producer and decide on what you want to achieve. If the producer is pulling you in a direction you don´t want to go. Then your performance might suffer from it. Even though he is right on the money in his suggestion. Having the right producer and keeping things simple usually works. Things you might´ve overlooked should be snapped up by a good producer. Remember, shit in = shit out. If you suck, the music will suck....

A suggestion from me would be, work on finding the right sound for things. Make sure the drummer, band and everybody are happy with the drum sounds. That will help the drummer on his performance, same thing with guitarist and vocalist. when all these small things are tight, the performance will actually be BETTER. Tell the engineer to get his hands the fuck off the compressor, cus using compressor takes SKILL. And most of these newage engineers have a fucked up view on what a compressor is supposed to do. All in all it does just fuck up your dynamic range. And a GREAT performance with no compression is a LOT better than a lousy performance with tons of compression.

Take your shit seriously and don´t kill your dynamic range. Respect it and embrace it. GOOD sounding records don´t have to have tons of compression. Though the idiot engineer might tell you that. :)

I´ve experienced that twice, when I had to go into the control room and ask the engineer if he had any compression on, he said yes, and I told him to turn it the fuck off. It helped a lot. FOR THAT SONG. So all I can say... if they guys don´t know what they are doing, do things simple and try to focus on the SOUND of your band rather than the production. Make sure you get down two to three different versions of each track. All in good quality both sound and performance wise.

Then hand it to a mixer and let the mixer mix it ALONE before you come with any wishes, demands and "band-mix" suggestions. That way you can compare HIS version to what you had in mind. And it will make his approach to things easier.

PS! An inexperienced Engineer and producer shouldn´t TOUCH the EQing and keep ALL tracks DRY when getting it on tape. Let the mixer do the EQs and all the other shit.

And remember, there are other things to think of when choosing a studio. You guys should really shop around. Find the studio YOU like. Not go for the option with an expensive SSL console with all the vintage gear if the ppl who work there are idiots and the vibe of the studio isn´t good, and just because it´s cheap.

The vibe MUST be right!! It´ll help your performance. and the bands performance.

    just a suggestion though. :)

    Hey man

Thanks for that it's really appreciated. It sounds like you really don't think engineers know what they are doing a lot of the time. I'll bear that in mind when recording.

    Thanks again

No I´m not saying that. I´m not trying to be derogatory or anything. It´s just a fact that there are engineers out there who simply think they can work magic with music. it´s not always the case. And less can be more.

There are many fantastic engineers out there. Pioneers and "heros", many of them believe in the fact that less is more. Just look at Brucie Swedien. please remember that these guys also work with GREAT musicians, so I´m not gonna sit here and talk TOO fondly of them ;) afterall there is a thing called money involved here.

But just don´t let yourself be fooled by a shining 128 track console :D

To be honest, I´ve been in a nice studio, with useless people. My music didn´t turn out any better.

But working in a shit studio with a brilliant engineer/producer did alot more.

It´s like watching NASCAR or Formula 1 bro, those cars are fast and capable of going very fast. But if the driver doesn´t know what he is doing, well, my guess he is gonna crash :)

Yeh I see what you mean.

    Thanks
