My main problem with political correctness is its advocates seem to have had a sense of humour lobotomy. As someone who puts humour above pretty much everything I never get on with politically correct people.

What many bemoan as political correctness is often times just civility. I can somewhat agree on the humor front, with caveats. I do believe pretty much any subject can be joked about, but context matters, who the joke is on matters, and skill in telling the joke matters. The last two are often forgot. People tell jokes poorly and then are angry when people aren’t laughing or are upset. Joke about anything, but when it’s about an injustice, don’t make the victim the butt of the joke. That’s not about being politically correct or overly sensitive, that’s a basic tenet of comedy. Comedy has historically been an equalizer; it lampoons the powerful and corrupt and exposes their hypocrisy. To use it to strengthen the power they already have is an abuse of comedy.

I like them, but their social media posts are so fucking annoying

''Feeling positively invigorated'' ''It's deeply gratifying'' ''We're genuinely euphoric'' etc

Wish they'd stop with the fucking pretentiousness, they sound like those foreign students who've learned English and try to cram as many big words into a sentence as possible

''It's with the utmost gratification and extraordinary passion for your euphoric and marvelous musicality that I kindly would wish for you to shut the fuck up :D''

Yes, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I think the top thing that bothers me about them is the pretentiousness without any originality to back it up.

  3. Jerseys are stupid expensive ($300 or so, especially when it has a player’s name on it). Therefore, if I were to get one, I’d get one that is blank on the back. It would be less expensive and wouldn’t have an “expiration date” of whenever that player got traded or signed elsewhere. Or if you must, then get some retired legendary player. But I’m also not much into having some other dude’s name written on my back.

And although all sports jerseys do look kinda dumb, when it comes to English sports and soccer in general, yeah, everyone looks like a hooray for tolerance! so definitely don’t bother.

  4. I’ve just started watching this 10-part, 18-hour treatise by historical filmmaker Ken Burns on the Vietnam War, which is on Netflix. So far, as is usual, the film is excellent and detailed. I can’t believe how completely lacking my education is on this topic. I’m probably going to have to watch this film a few times in order to actual absorb enough to have a working foundation on this history.

It looks like full episodes are on YouTube as well.

  5. I imagine I’ll get some shit for this, but I have a devil’s advocate question. I’m not familiar with the person Roseanne’s tweet was about, nor am I familiar with Planet of the Apes, but I think that Planet of the Apes has themes about abuse of power and that sort of thing. Is it possible that Roseanne was referring to that characteristic rather than just making a racist comment about a black person resembling an ape?

  6. Unfortunately Journey believe it or not (I’ve seen them three times even though I’ve never cared to see them once! They’re always on the bill with someone I do want to see). That freaking Filipino Steve Perry clone’s high notes pierced my ears in such a way that I actually felt dizzy and light-headed. I felt sick the rest of the evening. Torture in many ways.

  7. I just got back from an art house theater showing the biographical documentary on Mr. Rogers, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” I’ve seen a couple documentaries on Fred Rogers, but I thought this one was the best. It was very refreshing to have seen about a very caring and calm soul, which stands in such stark contrast to what we are exposed to all the time. I haven’t seen Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood since I was 5 or 6, but I was really surprised how all the sights and sounds of his show came flooding back to memory. A beautiful person and a beautiful documentary.

Agreed. They better come up with some originality soon, or they're going to pass like a fart in the wind. Then we'll have another one in about a year and a half.

I'm sure they're fun live and talented, but you should actually show that instead of mimicking a sound that's been driven so hard into the ground by other retro rock revival acts. It's so tired even by modern standards.

Upon a second view of them a number of months later it made me actually cringe, too. I mean, even the way the singer stands at the mic, the way he distributed his weight to each leg, the way he holds up his hands and fingers to the side at eye level, is all a Robert Plant copy! It’s like he watches old Zeppelin videos in slow motion and tries to match the look in the mirror. Get some originality, kid. Robert Plant has already been done, a lot better, by Robert Plant!

  9. In 20 years, when pretty much every last one of your favorite bands is dead, do you have a plan?

I don't, and it worries me.

Even now, more and more bands are retiring or dying. Venues where I once saw the real acts, like the House of Blues, are now being booked more and more with the corresponding tribute bands.  If this is all I'm left with, it will be horribly unfulfilling and empty.

I need my fix. If I go 6 months without a concert I really start to get the itch. Nothing touches my heart like the classic rock of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I know some of you have favorite bands from newer eras. I do not. I've tried, but to my taste they just don't reach whatever it is in me that these older acts do. I know I'm not the only one here that feels this way.

When I do go to shows, I see and meet a significant minority of attendees like me, people in their 20s and early 30s that are attached to this era of music and not to the one from our own generation. I don't think there's ever been a phenomenon like this where so many people  are out of sync with their own generation's music. As it is, in 20 years there will be millions of people in their 40s and early 50s with a good amount of life left in them with no live music they feel is worth attending.

Do you know how you're going to address this problem?

  10. Keith by a mile. I’ve only gotten more and more impressed with Keith’s playing, its nuance and subtlety through the years, the way he and the lead just dance around each other in the groove. Meanwhile I’ve secretly thought for the past several years that Zeppelin are honestly kind of boring. Their music lacks energy to my ears. I can still get into it sometimes but they come up short as compared to the other quintessential bands.

I finally got curious enough and watched the sermon. Im a bit surprised that across the pond his sermon was seen as being really energetic. :shrugs: Thats how even white people preach over here.  People are reacting like this is what they observed, lol:

Same; I couldn't agree more. I was half expecting to see something like this with how people were talking about it. Then I watched it and didn't know what the fuss was all about. I'm a Roman Catholic and an American and I would say that probably one out of four white Roman Catholic priests deliver homilies in much the same style as the bishop at the wedding. It's normal. I guess I didn't realize how much the American cultural influence has shaped preaching even in the American Roman Catholic Church.

    Spoiler

No wonder the Church in Europe is dying. It must be really boring!

I really liked his nod to Teilhard de Chardin! Really good to hear some Jesuit spirituality in the Anglican cathedral!

  12. I already have AFD. I've heard most of the other stuff and it's not worth listening to anyway. I don't need more knick-knacks and crap cluttering my house. And I definitely don't need to be paying exorbitant prices for it all. I'm too old for this shit at this point. I would have loved it when I was 15, but I couldn't have afforded it then. Now I could afford it if I really wanted it but I don't.

    None.

Happy May Day.  Not sure what that's all about, has something to do with spring.

It's actually about the rights of workers.

  14. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I am not going to discredit Bill Cosby's body of work because of his crimes. I still think his work was mostly excellent and retains relevance.

  15. I wanted to book an Air BnB for three nights in September for me and my groomsmen surrounding my wedding. Unfortunately after hidden fees and things, the price is twice what is advertised. Feels like it was a big waste. I wanted to be somewhere near the church and have a backyard grill so we could cook out and have some brewskis. I'm tired of shelling out exorbitant fees for every damn thing about this wedding. Looks like I'll be crashing on my parent's floor

After the crap that phil got into and almost going to jail and effectively leaving ac/dc hanging angus would have let him go. Add to that phil criticising axl in the press before he did one date and then later back pedalled phil is a steven adler, a loose cannon. You piss off the young brothers and theres no second chance. Angus would rather take chris slade   then deal with phils crap.

I get you, but Angus probably knows how to handle Phil. He’s worked with him for decades. Phil is the drummer on every AC/DC setlist staple except Thunderstruck. He may still be able to come back.
