  1. Cardinals fans had an absolutely pathetic reaction to the Heyward signing. Dude played there one year

    http://deadspin.com/bad-st-louis-cardinals-fans-assail-rent-a-player-for-l-1747618873

I know this happens across many fan bases but there is a particular arrogance and entitlement to cards fans, namely due to their "best fans in baseball" narrative.

Yeah, I don't think I came across one pissed off Jays fan when Price signed with Boston. We all knew he was a rental and the money he was going to command was never going to align with Blue Jay ownership.

Never been to St. Louis, but Chicago is a hell of a town to play baseball.

Jersey burning is idiotic. You love this person enough to pay 200 bucks for a shirt with the dude's name on it, but he changes shirts and you set your 200 dollar shirt on fire? Grow the fuck up.

They're actually $300 now in most cases. Which is why I don't have one and won't. And they're not even comfortable. A simple Mets t-shirt does it for me.

  2. I don't have cable, just good internet. I have a Roku which is my main TV source. I pay for Netflix ($8.50 per month), Hulu ($8 per month), and MLB.TV ($150 per year) and that gets me 90% of what I need. I can watch ESPN on Roku for free because I work for Disney, their parent company, but you can get that on Sling. I order Sling for one month a year, which is October because the National League playoffs are on there and are blacked out on MLB.TV, so that's $20 once per year for me, or once per month if you want it year-round. It has other live channels like TBS, AMC, and many others which more or less amounts to a basic cable package. I don't like football, but if you're into college football there is a Roku channel that broadcasts tons of free college football games live. On Roku you can get CBS News and FoxNews for free, plus several other national and international 24 hour news. If you live in a decent sized city, there will probably be at least 2 local news stations that you can watch on Roku, too. However, I bought a digital antenna so I get my main channels (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, PBS) over the air for a one-time cost of $30. All in all, it adds up to having cable, or at least a very, very close approximation of cable for a small fraction of the astronomical price of cable. Also, Roku is cool because there are hundreds of niche interest channels. For example, I am a space/astronomy geek and I have several free channels pertaining to those, which each have several weekly programs. I'd never have that if I just had cable.

Apollo, I know you're a sports guy which is probably your biggest concern. If you do what I did you will be satisfied 90% of the time anyway. MLB, NBA, and NHL all have subscription services online and through Roku/AppleTV/whatever that you can watch live, out-of-market games, and all games archived. It's a little bit of a pain when your team is playing in your broadcast region, but then Sling or an over-the-air channel will usually get it. The only thing I can't attest for is the NFL since they do not do a streaming service. But Sling and over-the-air will probably still get you a fair amount.

  3. Dead Man Walking by Sister Helen Prejean

Does the film do the book justice? It's one I need to get round to reading. I had the chance to see her speak a few years ago but was too disorganised to go.

It's a good film, but it only covers a few chapters of the book, and if I remember the film correctly (it's been a couple years), I don't think it really follows the evolution of Sister Helen's feelings and approach to her ministry which is an important part of the book. It is worth seeing, though. I think they work well together.

  4. Can I just point to the definition of the word "Amendment"?

An amendment is a formal or official change made to a law, contract, constitution, or other legal document. It is based on the verb to amend, which means to change. Amendments can add, remove, or update parts of these agreements. They are often used when it is better to change the document than to write a new one.[1]

It's subject to change by definition you absolute fucknuggets!!!!

Yeah, but the first ten are the Bill of Rights and are held as pretty much the most sacred of Constitutional Rights even though most people only know the 1st, 2nd, and 5th. Though they are amendments, to put it very, very loosely with no detail or eye to real accuracy, the Bill of Rights was put in after the original Constitution passed as an "Oh shit, yeah, these are pretty critical rights we really meant to put in he original and should have enumerated. Here they are." It would not be easy to amend the Bill of Rights.

  5. I'm agreeing with bran here. Though in my ideal world the 2nd amendment would never have been written in the first place (there, I said it), because it is a right, I do not believe it should be subject to being taken away if no applicable crime has been committed, and especially for something as flimsy as a government watch list. I have always believed in upholding rights over succumbing to fears. Besides that, in real life I have a very, very common name, a name that is the same as other people in my family, and I cannot tell you how many times I have been confused for someone else by the government and other very official things. I have to remain very vigilant about that and even still bullshit comes up frequently. I don't imagine this would be very different.

  6. I will say that Stone Temple Pilots is the only grunge music I voluntarily listen to from time to time. And as others have said, it is very odd listening to his music today with new ears. Someone said they wished VR had released a third album. I do, too. It never really felt like VR came to completion. It never felt like they had said all that they had to say in their music. We needed, and they needed, one more. I wish they had that. For a long while I believed they were just on hiatus, but after Slash's like 8th solo album that as far as I can tell nobody really listened to, it was obvious they were done.

  7. This is really unfortunate; I didn't see it happening right now because I haven't been following Scott Weiland, but it's not surprising. Almost 11 years ago to the day I saw VR from the front row and it was one of the best shows. I wasn't there for Scott but he was great.

That said he's always been kind of a caricature of a rock star, as his last interview displays. At first it was painful, then it was just pathetic funny.

Anyway, RIP Scott. Sorry you didn't get your shit together. Thanks for the good times.

  8. My parents were always really busy, so often as kids, we didn't put them up until Christmas Eve. When we were organised, nothing went up until a week before Christmas.

You could tell which was the Catholic house in the street though, as my parents insisted they stay up until the feast of the Ephiphany (the 12th day of Christmas) after everyone else had taken theirs down.

It really ought to stay up until the Baptism of the Lord.

Something that I won't get to this year but I will try next year is to side-by-side decorate for Advent and Christmas. I'll have two strands of lights in my hands, one purple, one white (or red/green/gold), and so whatever I'm decorating, be it a tree or a banister or whatever, I will just wrap them in both lights at the same time. During Advent, I'll only plug in the purple ones, and from Christmas Eve until the Baptism of the Lord, I'll only plug in the Christmas color ones. That way I can be festive for just as long as everyone else, but I can also be correct about it. It unfortunately seems like people have completely given in to stores and the corporate world beginning Christmas on November 1st. I haven't heard a single complaint about it yet this year. Some totally embrace it. Some even in their personal lives have bumped Christmas back to at least mid-November. We really can't let that continue in our private lives. Marking time and occasions correctly and according to some ritual and tradition is an important thing for us to do and we ought not let the money people fuck it all up.

  9. I hate to be negative, because I'd like to be excited for this movie, but I'm just tired of the hype and tired of every other post on Facebook being something Star Wars themed. People are taking this way out of proportion. This is a franchise where half of the movies to date completely blew. Everyone is just setting themselves up for massive disappointment. I mean, the movie might be great but with this amount of hype nothing could live up to what people are building this to be. It's like people didn't learn from Episodes 1-3.

  10. If a piece of clothing has the brand name embroidered all over it, like most designer things do, that will cause me to not want to wear it. I do not want to use myself as a walking billboard for those companies, especially if I'm the one paying for that advertising! Exceptions being clothes with sports teams or concert t-shirts, at appropriate times/locations, ie the game or the concert.

  11. Papi set to retire after next season. I wonder if he's expecting similar treatment Jeter and Mariano got.

JMO, but he was a juicer so he doesn't deserve the same honors..........

Not to mention spending too much time as a DH for me, personally, to take him as seriously as someone like Jeter. Maybe as seriously as Mariano, but then like you said Ortiz was a juicer.

  12. You guys really need to learn about millimetres. It will provide greater accuracy than inches.

On the up side, the business has started to really gain interest over the last fortnight.

Brits trying to teach us about the metric system, and then going on to speak of "fortnights."

Sorry Deeds but I'm not aware of a metric alternative for time measurement.

It wasn't that it's metric, it's that we get criticized for stupid and arbitrary measurements, and then those that criticize use even more arbitrary and outdated measurements like a "fortnight."

Fortnight = Fourteen Nights. It's no more arbitrary than biweekly is it?

    Biweekly defines itself.

  15. Part of being the better team is not allowing errors and stupid things to happen. The Royals basically didn't. So they were the better team. I think that the Mets have more talent and ability in them, but to be a real professional and a real tough team to beat, you have to allow that talent and ability out on a consistent basis. It's better to be an 8 out of 10 team all the time than a 10 out of 10 team 50% of the time and a 5 out of 10 team the rest of the time. The Mets were a 5 out of 10 team this World Series.

It was very painful to watch, because I knew the Mets could be the better team, and with just a couple things turning out different, the Mets would have won in 5 games instead. If baseball was an 8 inning game instead of a 9 inning game, we'd be talking about the NY Mets as World Champions right now.

But I'm just glad it's over. Having your favorite team in the postseason is stressful and now I can move on with life, lol.
