Yes, the lineup Axl had recruited was talented. And yes, if there wasn't the no-show in Philly, maybe Buckethead wouldn't have left (and also the album would have probably been released sooner).

But no, they wouldn't have taken the world by storm. That's just a fantasy.

Uh, in your opinion, they wouldn't have. They already had a slew of new songs developed, or in process. Imagine Chinese Democracy dropping in 2003 and GNR continuing the tour, with heavy promotion, interviews, epic music videos for their first 3 or 4 singles, and I'm pretty sure Axl Rose wouldn't have chosen the title track as the first single. Chinese Democracy was forced out in 2008 by the record company, which was way late, included zero promotion from Axl Rose and GNR, a dud of a first single, a failure to release TWAT (by far the best song on CD) as a single, and the album STILL went on to sell 1 million copies in the US. Think of how many more it would have sold in 2003 with proper promotion as well as the CD platform being more relevant then. NuGNR could have not only taken the world by storm, but they could have saved rock music.

Probably always was a doomed project to be honest, Guns n Roses were known as true rock n rollers and “NuGuns” were not that at all. An early 2000’s release and then a proper follow up would have at least earned more respect for Axls vision, which is probably more interesting than trying to imitate Appetite a dozen times but I bet if Axl could turn back time he’d have done something different in those 20 years

Uh, no. Axl created a ton of music with Finck and Bucket. Axl doomed everything with Philly no show and hiding in his mansion for next 3+ years. He could have gone on to continue the tour, release CD in 2003, with heavy promotion and epic music videos. They would have then gone one to release at least 2 more albums (probably more), over the years. So, no those years with Bucket and Finck weren't a waste. They created some great songs (including the General and Monsters), better than anything VR came out with. And how has the reunion been since 2016? Zero new music from this group. Nothing but an endless cash grab tour for all the sheep.

this guys think  a niche guitar player (Buckethead)  and  someone good but not great (robin fink)  have they stayed /released music would take GNR to a different level /bury the old band.

    nothing farther from the truth.

If Axl didn't no-show Philly 2002, they could have taken the world by storm. That band had so much talent, potential, and who knows how high of a ceiling. The Philly no show, which triggered the tour being cancelled as well as Buckethead leaving, is what doomed NuGNR.

GN'R's (and Axl's) output has been varied in quality, to put it mildly. That Bach liked a song is not a guarantee you or I will. Nor that Axl wants to release it. Most likely, many of us will like The General, and many will find it disappointing.

I figure it has to be at least as good as Evader's version, which is pretty good.

Great decision by the band. Lose free publicity and additional streaming revenue in a trade off for fans listening to the song for free anyways with none of the above. Genius. Just absolutely brilliant.

Axl is probably a billionaire now after 7 years of cash grab touring. Whatever money he could generate from the General would be chump change to him.

The problem is, this is all subjective - is there a right or wrong this case beyond personal preference?  For example I personally like Slash's Perhaps solo way more than Robin's and think he has been totally fine so far on the Chinese material live, contrary to those who call his playing just mindless noodling

It's about as subjective as comparing a Ferrari to a Ford. I'll take the Ferrari (Robin's Perhaps solo) over the crappy Ford (Slash's Perhaps solo) every time.

In fact, Slash's solo is so bad, it tarnishes the songs so much for me that I have zero interest in listening to it, at least his version of it.

It must be painful for Axl, who has probably painstakingly perfected these songs over decades, to have Slash shit out guitar work and paste them into the mixes. Maybe Axl cares less, because he has the golden mixes with Buckethead and Robin slated for a special release, or just for his own personal enjoyment.

Axl calls all the shots for GNR still, does he not? I don't get why he is green lighting Slash's replacement solos, which have been clearly inferior to the originals. You would think Axl would say something like, "you know Slash, let's go ahead and have you do your own version of the same note", which would be much better than replacing them entirely.

"Might be" – exactly. We don't know!  There could be a hundred songs out there with the same melody for all ke know. People are wasting their time with some make-believe thing that probably won't come close to the real thing.

Sorry, I just don't see the point. I don't get it at all

The melody for Evader's mix is based off the cell phone clip, is it not?

Why are we even taking the Evader mix seriously? It's a guess based on a poor quality phone clip from years ago and other unidentified or unrelated bits. It's just guesswork. We have no idea what the song actually sounds like. Chances are it won't sound like the Evader thing – which also has completely unintelligible vocals.

C'mon guys, it's just desperation. The Evader thing might be way off for all we know

Because it might be the same melody.

  10. Supposedly, the General is an epic masterpiece that is a sequel to another epic masterpiece, Estranged. At minimum, it will be better than the Evader mix, which is pretty good. I'm expecting a 7 minute plus song of epic proportion. Yes it's a B side, but then again, we know Axl wants nothing to do with promoting his music anymore. No promotion for CD. There Was a Time is the best NUGNR song and was surprisingly never released as a single. Locomotive, another epic song that I consider one of the best ever also was not released as a single. So, the General being released as a B side means nothing to me.  My anticipation of the General releasing is up there with CD releasing. I could care less about the Boring Stones.

Hackney Diamonds is a way bigger deal for me than The General and being done infinitely better in terms of going about the release. Fuck gnr. The Stones are showing how shit is supposed to be done.

The Stones who haven't had a good song since like the 60's or 70's? Versus what may be the greatest song ever recorded in history, as long as Slash doesn't ruin the solo.

I wouldn't be surprised if the lyrics to The General are about Axl's first visit to Dollar General, where he quickly discovered and was unpleasantly surprised it's not actually "dollar store" where everything is a dollar. In the middle of the song, he sings about Dollar Tree, which he discovers is a store where everything is actually a dollar or less. The last part of the song's lyrics were updated to reflect Axl's frustration with Dollar Tree's recent raising prices of some items to $1.25.

No way in hell has Axl Rose ever visited a Dollar General.
