  1. I love all of the guitar experts on here who say Slash can't play the Chi Dem material. Why couldn't he,if he took the time to learn the songs? He's been a professional musician for almost 30 years. I doubt Axl will drop the album entirely, especially because Dizzy (and possibly Fortus/Pitman) will still be around as a connection to that era. The initial shows would do great business with or without the CD songs and since the album means a lot to Axl ,I doubt he'd neglect it entirely to avoid upsetting a few nerds online. Songs like The Blues and CITR would fit right in alongside classic Illusions era tunes.

You don't need to be an expert to hear that what the guitarists (bumblefoot, buckethead) did is a level or two above anything Slash has ever put to record (we're not talking about anything but the technical side of playing, not good or bad etc). Slash is a brilliant player, but he doesn't have the same technique that is required to pull those parts off like the record... now! could he play something similar in a "Slash" way? yes! At 50 (ish) I can't imagine Slash sitting down learning how to sweep and tap, he's never been in to it and I think he's quite happy with his own style.

If you know of a video or any recording that shows Slash playing at the same technical level as either player did on CD, I'll gladly watch it. Before we get bogged down in the "it's not all about technique" discussion, it isn't all about technique... but this particular discussion it is, as we're asking would Slash play the parts in a reunion scenario etc.

As for a reunion tour having Chinese material? I would bet a lot that they would not be playing any CD material. Now, let's assume a reunion tour happens and they then decide to make a full album when they finish. I could then imagine them working a song maybe two from CD into the set. There's three issues - 1. the old line-ups back catalogue is what people really care about 2. Willingness of the rest of the band to play CD material 3. A set can only be so long, so if they play a CD song, what UYI, Lies, or AFD song are they cutting.

For me I'd like to see some crossover, Better, Street of Dreams, This I love maybe even Chinese itself... obviously not all at once, but rotated on a nightly basis? yes. I hate when bands ignore the history of their bands "that 20 year period never happened, we only have 3 albums..." VH, Metallica (seem to be embracing load/reload a whole lot more these days, Thankfully) being examples of this, VH only playing DLR era VH, Metallica ignoring their 90s material for the guts of 10 years.

With Van Halen they pretty much ignored the DLR era stuff when they have Sammy Hager with them, they only use to play 3 or so songs from that era along with a Sammy tune or two. More like in the vien of Velvet Revolver.

Also VH toured for years with Hager, did a reunion tour in 2004. Why would you want to hear DLR sing the hager stuff?

Same thing for Guns, with the exception of This I Love (which was around during the old era) and maybe something like catcher why on earth would you want to hear CD stuff with Slash/Duff/Izzy/Adler/Sorum up there? I can see them getting a kick out of it later on maybe throwing in some of their solo stuff or VR songs along with a CD track just to spice it up. Espeically if they start going back to venues, but I'd imagine it only be as a throwaway or restbite from the classics.

Now if there was some sort of hybrid line up with fortus, Dizzy, Pitman, Frank alongside Axl, Slash, Duff then maybe. But in general wouldn't we want new stuff from those guys or stuff from the good old days?

  2. What's happening to the MOST STABLE LINEUP ever? It's all falling apart! I don't want to see The General masterpiece being played by a nobody like Duff, I want legendary bassist Tommy Stuson! Oh, by the way, this is not news, there were clues all over the place about Tommy leaving. I didn't announce it before out of respect for Tommy and my very legit source I can't name. I'm on the music business so I am a legit insider.

My guess is Chris Snakepitman is next to announce his departure.

True. My source told me about this six months ago as well. I made a couple posts about it back then, all very vague ones, but I think they were pretty obvious. One was in the sports section when I said the Dodgers needed a veteran presence in their bullpen. And another when I said I didn't like Nicklebacks last album. Oh, and another where I mentioned taking the boat out to our cabin to spend the weekend.

I could tell you what is in store for 2016, especially since I often hang out with the band. But out of respect to Axl and my friends within the band I am keeping the info secret for now. But once the news is officially announced I will come on here and confirm that I already knew it.

    All I can say is:

    Father's Heaven

    Nine Dragons

    Mother's Earth

    Comrades

Pahaahha loving the obscure Shenmue II reference, which Im assuming only about 0.5% get on here if that.

Seems consistant with whats happened before with this band everyone is always in the dark. I would see Gilby coming back for Rhythm Guitar

  3. Well I was listening to an interview with Brain from a couple of years ago (I'd Hit That podcast - theres also one with Josh Freese that explains what happened from 97-99) but he was explaining some funny stories about bucket and guns etc. The really interesting thing (he practically brushes over it) that after the 2002 tour when they found out in the hotel that the tour was over and it all imploded they all went home. They all did nothing until 2004 when they aimed to play RiR - he recieved no calls to go work on anything etc. no one was doing a thing. That album was done by the 2002 tour - bucket never came back, there was no heading into the studio to work on more material or anything!

But I think the fact that the Replacements being back and Tommy being done with the band could be a big big deal. I really don't see Stinson returning he bailed on the last shows and I do think he's been there so long that he is quite important and not simply another touring hire. The problem with a CD 2 is the fact that it will be by a band with none of the members there now, all the guitarists will be different (apart from Fortus who plays on very little it seems), the bass player, the drummer.

Lets hope for a 2016 reunion and maybe a big box set/from the vault type release of the CD sessions (we can dream right???).

  4. The era of fixing live albums up in the studio is over.

By over I assume you mean ubiquitous?

With Protools/DAW of your choice its very easy to fix the tracks up in the studio after the fact - a little tuning here, a little edit there. Most bands record live albums of a venue they play 2/3/4/5 nights in a row and take the best takes but many tracks I'd guess are comp'd together from various performances in places. Pay for a guy to sit in the studio / in front of a computer for a week and its relatively easy to do.

  5. Disagree on Better not having that classic GNR feel. Sure, there are some progressive/industrial moments, but the verses are very much old school bluesy rock.

It's one of those wierd ones where it's played using a Drop Db Tuning (Same goes for CD) which old guns never used however Slash has used it quite a bit in VR (Im unsure about his solo stuff) so that heavier modern sounding guitar work is something both Axl's Band and VR ended up doing in and around the same time. So I think the old band could of / would of made a similar record to CD but would of shelved all of the hip hop/ processed drum beats and some of the wierder sound effects.

Also double tracking is used on the record to a hilarious level so with that stripped away the songs under neather could easily made into songs that the "old/Classic" band could play - except Shacklers, that song is plain nuts.

  6. Lol Billy Corgan has broken up, reformed, broken up, split with everyone again!

That band is littered with hissy fits! I mean he recorded so much of the material throughout their history that half the time the other members (jimmy aside) were reduced to live stand ins. But he tried to break with the traditional record release cycle and release things on the net and it didn't really work out. Rock fans (and i mean rock in the most general sense of the genre) still relate best to album releases in the traditional sense but he's muddied the water so much with what a SP release is that its not lead to one song on the radio 3x a year with an album in shops/iTunes/Spotify every year or two to space out and organise the music neatly.

I think if Axl was going to do it (make a break from the GnR name) he should of done it before the release of CD but when GnR gigs regulary make a gross of $1.5m - $2m im not sure he could of afforded it.

  7. Knockin' and Live and Let Die are two covers they have recorded, and MORE people know THEIR version then the originals, Another Brick In the Wall isn't the full song, just an intro to November Rain like "It's Alright" was back on the UYI tours and Guns have been playing Whole Lotta Rosie since the club days back in 86'...so yeah, stop complaining.

Really?? You think the GnR version of LALD is more famous than the Paul McCartney version from the movie?? Try again.

Also trying to pick the most famous version of Knockin' is a challenge cause theres so many covers of it, its kind of in the "standard" bracket.
