  1. In the current state of things I don't think a lot of people would miss Axl within a VR/GnR environment - people even think that he is the weakest link in NuGNR. The question is if Axl would let himself go like this nowadays if he had to start a successfull solo career.

Of course a VR-Gnr would not have been fronted by Myles or Weiland - seb bach would have been great for it.

    Not really.

Nice try though, please play again.

IFall to Pieces is about Slash missing Axl. True story. I'm surprised people haven't caught onto that.

um no. Its about Scott Weiland's relationship with Mary Forsberg and both of their relationship's to heroin... at least according to Scott and Mary's autobiographies which I would tend to believe seeing as how he wrote the lyrics.

  2. Edit: According to this article (in portuguese), one of the many reasons the tour, that was supposed to have happened on October, was postponed was so they could have some more recording sessions to the new album.

Hopefully they cancel all these album shenanigans so that they can focus on touring.

But seriously, that bit at the end was literally the only hopeful thing about the entire OP. Otherwise, another SA trek is just more never-ending touring masturbation.

    but I like masturbation

  3. Appetite is so much better than Illusions that it is not even funny.

I beg to differ. I love AFD, but Illusions has much more depth- lyrically, emotionally, and musically. Shows how the band grew and evolved- for better or worse. I think they're both equally honest and valid in artistic terms.

  4. Too many producers, too many sessions.

Axl did vocals in 99 and kept them in. IRS, TWAT, and Catcher should have all been redone. The vocals don't sound right at all.

Axl's voice had problems. There's real issues there. I'm sure of it now. You can't sing like he did in his 20's and not damage it.

I'm sure that didn't help production. There's things he can do now and things he can't. He's more nasally.

Scaped and Shacklers and Rhiad are highlights. Don't know what world you're on.

Scraped is probably the most exciting thing on the album vocally.

TWAT is terrible. Nasally. Crooning. Whining. He lets the song down.

But the vocals were 9 years old. Whatever way they fit with the music then, they didn't anymore.

TIME is why it's inconsistent. Not leaks, nothing like that. TIME.

I love the vocals on those songs- especially IRS, and especially especially TWAT

  5. It went through too many musicians. Half of the musicians who played on the album didn't write the songs. Brain, Fortus, Frank, and Bumble had little or nothing to do with the writing. Finck, Freese, Tobias, Axl, Dizzy, and Pitman did most of the writing. Even bucket was playing on songs he didn't write.

I don't think the final product was what axl intended either. He played SOD, Riad, SW, OMG, CD, and Maddy in 2001/2002. Silkworms was going to be on a later album. CD, Riad, SOD, and Maddy were songs axl considered minor. In 2002 he said were supposed to release 15 or 16 songs and then have the ones the already played as bonus tracks. Catcher in the Rye was supposed to be the lead single with a music video. CITR has yet to even be released as a single. I think axl put the songs he did on the album mainly because they leaked. I believe that certain songs wouldn't have made the album and others would've had the leaks not have occurred.

Another thing is the songs were written over such a wide spread period. You have TIL that was written in 94'. You have Madagascar that was written in 1997 or 1998. You have SOD, Prostitute, IRS, CITR, TWAT, and CD that was written around 1999-2001. You have SR that was written around 2001-2003. You have Better and ITW that were written around 2005. And you have Scraped and sorry which are probably the newest songs written around 2006.

    That's a 14 year period.

All that just adds to the backstory and mystique of the record. The amount of players and their varying styles and skillsets is one of its strengths. It all contributes to the massively epic vibe.

  6. Shotgun blues, bad apples

    yup.

get in the ring at least has a killer riff before its embarrassing ringside rant. shotgun blues is just bad beginning to end - disposable riff, shitty lyrics, mediocre solo. bad apples is undermined by questionable production (axl's weird baaaaaad apples enunciation, for example). those are the only two songs i really routinely skip when i listen to the albums.

Only song i hate is irs worst song ever!

what strikes me as interesting is that it seems like people are on the same page when it comes to the worst tracks on the older records -- anything goes for appetite, get in the ring/shotgun blues/my world for UYI II, etc. -- but when it comes to Chinese Democracy, a lot of the tracks people name are other people's favourites.

i'm not sure if that's just because the album didn't have as many clear standouts (you won't find many people disputing that Sweet Child is great, for example, but a lot of people either love or hate songs like IRS) or if it's because it was divisive musically. some people 'got' songs like If the World and other people HATED them.

i personally like all of Chinese Democracy, but years later, I'd say the ones I play least are Scraped, Sorry, and Riad. not sure how anyone could hate IRS...if only for that killer scream and the guitar solo.

I don't get some of the hate for IRS either. I would think (at least from a casual fan pov) that it would be one of the more popular songs on the record. Monster riff, killer solo, epic vocal wail, cool lyrics, awesome chorus. Definitely my favorite rocker on the record.

  7. It is the only fuckin' generally great thing Guns did. Why all this, stupid smug ''oh I do not like it. I prefer UYI 2 because I am homosexual' attitude? Appetite is the greatest hard rock album ever and would not look out of place on a top five greatest rock albums ever list. It has the lineage of Chuck and Stones in its veins. Illusions are no where near the calibre of this album. Democracy is a complete turd compared to Appetite. Appetite is GN'R's triumph. It is the one moment when you can speak of gnr, in a similar manner to how you would speak of the Beatles and Stones. It is an incredible album, Nightrain, Brownstone. Illusion had nothing like this.

Illusions is way more Stones than Appetite. Lies is the most Stones of the catalog. CD more Beatles than AFD. AFD is more Sex Pistols than Stones or Beatles.

    well-thats-just-like-your-opinion-man-gi

Donnie, you're out of your element.

  8. I would pay big money to see them play My World for the entirety of the set. Its long been a dream of mine to see a big time band play the exact same song the exact same way for 2-3 consecutive hours.

    Same

Imagine the faces of the basic casual fans

That's what would make it so great- is too see the initial elation turn to confusion, then confusion turning to anger. It would be the greatest show ever. It seems like something Andy Kaufman would do if he fronted a rock band.

  9. Maybe they should just continue releasing nothing.

I'm a huge Neil Young fan and as much as I looked forward to his 1st archive (63-71) box set and he teased us with it for over 15 years too- It seemed like a bit of a letdown when I finally got it. As much as I still loved it, I knew that was it, that I wasn't going to hear any more material from that time period- and I didn't have anything else to look forward too.

  10. Who says many layers of guitars is necessarily a bad thing? Who says that variety is a bad thing?

I say its a good thing. The guitar army onslaught is one of my favorite things about the record.

Thing is all the songs are about as great as each other. But Axl did say the follow up was pretty similar to CD. I cant see why the label wouldnt want to release it.

Maybe the label know a post humous release will make more money. They're trying to wait it out (or does death void the record deal?). Or maybe Axl knows the label won't give it a proper release and he's trying to wait it out.

  11. I think there was just a lot he was trying to accomplish, just take the years 94-00 for example. He goes through a court case with his two ex's, people are pushing him to do this and that, he ultimately starts losing his band, his mom passes away, in his mind everyone wanted more out of him at a time he wanted to be left alone or at least some understanding. At this point Axl is a wife beating psycho who can't get along with his band who leaves him. Pressure from the record company puts him back into trying to make a guns record with a new cast. He gets a band together and starts trying to fit pieces of what has happened into lyrics.

Now he's getting sued from his former band mates. This I'm sure stings. He's got a task to make this new assignment work and his life has collapsed over the past 5 years.

I think at this point he just starts writing a lot of songs, he needed a way to express how he felt but there's so much that has happened it's hard to make one theme so his lyrics are coming from everywhere.

Out of all the songs Axl wrote during this time I think we just got a random selection of songs that have no theme. They are just songs of anger , revenge, depression, things he saw on the tv, failure, and expectation. I think some of the better songs are still buried. It was just hard for Axl to express what he wanted at this time.

The other problem was his voice was either high and clean or deep and raspy. He was missing the middle voices and soft voices on songs like patience. I think 88-93 Axl could have made the record huge, but vocally something was off.

Anyways if you actually read this I'm sorry. It's all pretty ridiculous haha but who knows I guess a lot of things were against Axl when it came to making Chinese Democracy...maybe that's why he said it was a miracle it ever came out.

I think there is a consistent theme and it has to do with the things you mentioned. The theme is pain, loss, betrayal.

  12. For the record, Appetite is not my favorite GNR album. For me, its Lies. Just saying, when in the right mood, and blasting Appetite, that IS Guns N Roses. And even though I know every single note of the album, occasionally it does seep in that this was one of the most amazing bands ever. I don't think any other album represents them quite as good as the debut.

Appetite represents them as a band, but Illusions represents them more as individual artists. I like Lies, but I don't really think of it as an "album." It seems like more an EP with a few recycled throwaways. It feels like a stop-gap to buy time until they got their act together to record a proper follow-up, but there are 4-5 classic mainstays on there and it did sort of act as an evolutionary conduit between lp's. Its the most bluesy of their material... and they never really seemed to go there again sonically so I definitely think it has merit.

  13. Live show lineup order of preference

    06-07 era

    01-02 era

    09-current era

    91-93 era

    86-89 era

Honestly If I had my choice I'd like to see Tracii era GNR. Not that the quality of the show would be better, but how many people can say they saw the truly original GNR?

  14. Probably the album I listen to the least now. I listen to Spaghetti far more frequently. Not a knock on the record. Its kind of like a live in girlfriend. I've already heard everything she has to say. I know what she's gonna say before she says it. Yeah I love her and she's still beautiful, but the grass is always greener. Its comforting to know that she's there.

Little bit of diggity here and there
