There is no 'joke' release. That sounds like fans who don't like the song being in denial because they can't believe their favorite band put out a tune that they don't like. This is like when a band releases an album with a bad mix and the fans just swear that the 'real' mix will be released later, which is entirely nonsensical.
It's the first release since 2008, it has artwork and a visualizer, and it's been played live twice now (with much gusto from Axl, by the way). Beta is defending it online.
You might not like it, but it's not a joke or a throwaway - it's their new song, and one they stand behind.

The song's a bit repetitive but, overall, I like it. For every accusation that this is a Prodigy ripoff, to me it sounds pretty much like what Guns N' Roses would sound like in 2021. This band was always only half of a 'classic blues based rock' band - the other half was *always* punk inspired, and this is that side of the band. If you really listen to it, in both sound and spirit, this song is a descendant of It's So Easy.
Fans complaining about what should and should not be the first single of a potential new album is ridiculous - we're not marketing executives for a record label. Who *cares* what would make a good first single or where it falls on the charts? All of that shit only matters to people in the music industry.
And never did I expect to read Guns N' Roses fans dissecting Axl Rose's lyrics for hints of misogyny or complaining that they aren't politically correct enough for the times. Axl Rose! Which band have you *been listening to* all these years? Shouting about a parasitic, syphilitic priestess baby with a pussy full of maggots sticks out so much because, honestly, there are a lot of bands who wouldn't even *dare* say that type of shit in today's climate. That's a certain type of ballsy, 'fuck you' swagger that I love from this band.
So to recap:
1. Mean, aggressive sounding punk tune? Check.
2. Axl ranting without a care in the world? Check.
3. Slash shredding away? Check.
I love it. Hard School is a bit too bland compared to this one. I'm an Absurd fan.

I actually thought it was kinda cool that Axl was still rock god-ing it with a little heft.
I also keep hearing people complain about the rings and the jewelry and the hats. Fuck that - I like it all. The guy’s one of the last of the real rock stars - I want him to play it up.
The only thing that bugged me was the short hair. It just looked a bit off. Keep that hair long, Axl!

A lot of you need to understand that the band isn't designing the setlist for those of you following along nightly on Periscope. There are a lot of people who don't sit on MyGNR every night and are only seeing this show one time - and the band wants to give them the most complete show possible.
And again, this is a big stadium show and also their first (and who knows? Maybe only) time coming back around, which means they're drawing a lot more 'casual' fans than a typical tour might. Trust me, when you're on that stage, you want the crowd going nuts as much as possible: I had great seats right up front in DC, and as much as I loved Coma, there was a significant portion of the crowd that, while they were into it, clearly didn't know the song as well as, say, Brownstone or Patience. The band doesn't want to turn off half the crowd while they run through 8 minutes of Locomotive, a deep cut for the diehards. They gave us Coma - that's for us (and Slash). Plus, all the Chinese stuff is pretty foreign to most of the crowd - especially TIL and Better.
As for why they play The Seeker? The simple answer is that the band probably likes the song. And isn't that what we want? A band playing a song at their most energized? Trust me - when I was listening along to the Periscopes, I was like "eh, this song is pretty boring." When I saw it live in DC - when I saw Slash jumping up and down rocking the fuck out to the song - I loved it. Some things aren't meant to translate well over the internet.

I’ll be honest - watching a few YouTube vids and livestreams from tonight’s show, and I think Axl sounds pretty damn good.
