  1. In my opinion UYI's are Guns' equivalent to the The White Album. The songs are not quite as good as on AFD nor the UYI's are as tight, but the extent and diversity is more of a strength rather than weakness. AFD is straight to the point and in your face but the UYI's take the listener on a strange journey.

I think there are only two or three real filler tracks - meaning really dull and forgettable. Each of the rest of the songs defend their place on the albums and have something to say. There might be songs that are weird, too long or plain stupid but they still form some connection to me. There are songs that didn't do anything to me at the first listen but then they grew on me during the years or while on specific state of mind.

I'm more happy with two Illusions with total of 30 diverse songs than one Illusion with some 14 of the best tracks.

  2. Munich '93 (and Estranged video) would look great when scanned in 4K but to be honest, we don't really know if they filmed the whole show throughuly or did they only film smaller fragments here and there to just get the atmosphere shots for the video. We know that most of the close-ups were filmed separately in a studio so it might be the case that we don't have the whole Munich show on film.

Cathouse '89 on the other hand might be similiar "Holy grail" as Ritz '91.
IIRC, they played full show there that was filmed in entirety for the It's So Easy video, so it's similiar case as the You Could Be Mine video shoot at Ritz. Cathouse gig had original lineup, apparently they were on fire AND it was shot on film. The ISE video they released for the AFD box looks amazing in HD.  Releasing Ritz '91 was great move - let's hope they would open the vault even more from now on.

So for AFD box they omitted the live stuff but we got lots of demos and for Illusion box we didn't get any demos but got lots of live footage. These fucking guys..

  3. Yeah, if they think they have to do it big way and have an impact they might have to do a reality check. The UYI days are long gone. Chinese could have been huge had it been released 8 years sooner. At best they have nothing more to gain than respect from their current fans - they won't have a huge impact at the current pop zeitgeist - so they should accept that, relax and just release anything. Or quit. Or admit that they are in just for the easy money. But continuing the tour for fifth (!) year, with no big changers and honeydicking people to spend money with vague statements - that's bullshit.

I for one would love to have an acoustic EP à la Lies. Doesn't even have to be originals, they could play covers (as they seem to love to do). Something laid back just to show us they care. Maybe it would also loosen the weight to release something more solid.

  4. With all the respects to the professional crew, I just don't like the NITL stage design. Too many video screens (is it really necessary to have video screens on bloody stairs?) and the visuals are tacky and quite distracting. Also the lighting, while impressive, just isn't very dramatic imo. The stairs and platforms are quite distanced from the audience and are not used that effectively (compared to UYI tour). All in all, the stage feels quite cheesy and Vegasy IMO.

Couple of examples: Welcome to the Jungle in UYI tour - after the main guitar solo in the breakdown (YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?!) the stage goes dark except for the manic search lights, creating really dramatic and intense moment. Also the Live and Let Die strobe lights.

While the UYI lighting rig was impressive as well, it seemed that they managed to achieve more with less compared to now. The platforms were well used (of course the band, especially Axl, was more fit back then :P). The current stage is clearly made with big bucks and professionalism but I just think it lacks good taste.

Am I the only one who thinks Wichita Lineman is the best cover they've added since the tour started? It's a fine little song that everyone sounds good on, and it's the best cover vocally aside from I Feel Good, IMO.

Well I love the song and the band plays it beautifully and in addition, it fits Axl vocally.

Sad thing is, I don't think Glen Campbell and that song were ever that popular in Europe so the song kinda kills the mood in the crowd, especially in large festivals. The song would fit much better in smaller venue with more intimate atmosphere.

Also, with Blackhole Sun as well, it's been almost year since Campbell and over year since Cornell died so the tribute value for those covers has little dried by now. I guess the band just enjoys playing those songs. It's just sad that the set is so filled with covers IMO

Axl is no way in worse shape than before, probably same shape or a little better. His hair looks shoter and moisturized.

Looks great, but we might need a pic from the side perspective as well :)

I don't actually mind how fit he is, but the cowboy boots and ripped jeans are terrible. He looked actually quite nice during the sound check :shrugs:

  7. One sad possibility is that they didn't film the gig as a whole - instead filming only bits and fragments and individual shots to be used for the music video.

I can't say for Cathouse exactly but that seems to have been common practice in the 70's and 80's, when filming music videos, as film stocks were (and are) quite expensive.

That being said, I sure hope that they filmed the whole thing and it would surface someday, the quality is amazing and it looks like a wild gig B-)

I especially love the shot of Axl singing and standing staunchly while the audience is tearing his shirt off. They sure were menacing mofos back then!

  8. One thought occured to me: when was the music video for November Rain filmed? Obviously it was in late 1991 or somewhere in 1992, as Gilby was in the video (with Tracy and Roberta there to help them).

I just always assumed that Slash sitting (or standing or laying) on top of the piano was a callback to the video, but I just noticed that he already did it in 1991 with Izzy still in the band as seen in St. Louis and Stockholm videos.

So maybe the idea for standing on top of the piano in the video came from their live shows and not the other way around. I had never thought of that

  9. Maybe not a monthly subscription style, but a website where you can purchase shows individually à la Springsteen and Metallica.

It would be awesome to include full concert videos as well. I think most bands with similiar services offer soundboard only - with videos GNR could offer something unique.

Of course I understand the quality wouldn't be the best - I don't think they recorded that many shows on multitrack so the audio is mostly just the raw mix and the videos are probably just the live screen feeds. It still would be a goldmine for fans to finally explore the vault.

I, for one, wouldn't mind if they didn't spend that much time remastering the footage - just put them online as they are and I would empty my wallet.

Wishful thinking, of course, as I don't think the band would be very willing releasing concerts with possibly bad playing, bad quality and with all the tantrums.

But in this time of internet, such service could be possible. Hope they would smell the money

  10. Yeah to be fair, those streams were from quite back, I hope they are more lively at the front. I think being late had something to do as well, and many have been pissed off about the logistics at the venue..

Also it seems there might be something wrong with the screens, they seem to be flickering?

Organizers announced that the show will end by midnight, it's gonna be quite short show if they obey it. Or then keep going until 01:00.

But is it just me or is Axl sounding better than on last few gigs?

  11. Couple of notions:

    - Only one show in UK? I mean they probably will add another London show based on ticket sales, but no Scotland, no Manchester?

    - Norway missing? They have visited there on almost every European tour since UYI. I feel sorry for them.

    - Also only two shows in Germany. They usually get lot more gigs.

The schedule seems to be pretty tight, there isn't much room for more concerts as they seem to like to take 2-3 days off in between.
