  1. His status as an icon says everything I need to know about Punk. Before it, icons were artists who were the best at what they did. Whether we are talking about Frank or Hendrix, this was a rule. The best plus charisma. The early Rock N' Rollers were veteran musicians well versed in various Blues and Country styles, and someone like Buddy Holly employed a genius that was palpable in his work. Punk recalls that in no way. A similar streak of rebelliousness in political and social context doesn't disguise the fact that Punk as music that we need to evaluate in musical terms doesn't follow that rule. And its a good rule.

"I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dilettantes and, uh... and, uh... heartless manipulators, about music... that takes up the energies, and the bodies, and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds, of young men, who give what they have to it, and give everything they have to it. And it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt; it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism, and, everything that's rotten about rock 'n' roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten... but I'm sure, I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did.

You see, what, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise... is in fact... the brilliant music of a genius... myself. And that music is so powerful, that it's quite beyond my control. And, ah... when I'm in the grips of it, I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever, have you ever felt like that? When you just, when you just, you couldn't feel anything, and you didn't want to either. You know, like that? Do you understand what I'm saying, sir?" -

  2. I don't like the Dions so much?! They sound like poor power pop and poor punk :C

I found today the Gorgons Crab Cake EP for 2€! I actually bought it only because of the labels flyers inside - their fifth realese was an A-Bones 7" + the label is French! Very good B-side of garage/surf, with the first side being pretty dull.

  3. Here's another video

The more you listen to them the more you realize...these guys could fucking play!

Heh, seems like everywhere they're boasted about their live shows! cool video. The singer reminds me a bit, although solely by looks, the late Jay Reatard. Must be the curly mop!

zint you know anything about White Wires? They're from Ottawa.. They have a pretty rockin' album out. Especially the tune Girly, Girly, Girly is a must-hear. You can find it on their myspace page.

And I again stress this but some of you who have posted in this thread (besides zint)... atleast one of you must live somewhere where is a prolific scene going on?! What are the buzz bands around there?? It doesn't matter if they don't sing in English...

  4. It's obvious there's certain members who share an interest to punk music so I thought we could have a chat thread about punk/HC/garage/postpunk/etc.?!

I'm currently listening to Against The Glass EP by Slow, which zint61 mentioned in the Sid Vicious thread. Pretty solid punk with obvious hardcore influence. Not exactly my favorite though..

ps. promote your local bands/scene! I could start by mentioning The Heartburns. They sound a bit like Portlands (Oregon) Mean Jeans but were around almost ten years earlier!

  5. He isn't a legend or an icon. People praise him because he lived fast and died young. How punk rawk of him!

You can argue the nature of his character but he IS an icon no matter what you say.... Definition of an icon from dictionary.com: "a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it". And to some people Sid Vicious will always stand as the representation of punk rock. Just as Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop, GG Allin or Patti Smith will to some.
