One thing that seems pretty clear is that no one in the band seems intent on any real promotion regarding any of the newer material. Amazing that we got a video for "perhaps".

Pragmatically speaking, there's next to no money in music sales anyway these days, so hardly a problem.

Plus their whole touring gimmick is playing the hits. It's sort of why a "comeback" album does them zero favors. If the tour becomes all about new songs, then they're playing much smaller shows because the general public considers them an old legacy band with next to no interest in new material. They've found themselves in the perfect position as the touring industry and music industry evolve. The best course of action is to do nothing, which is what GnR specializes in.

All of those theories about how they were one long song or a song split in two or a hidden track or whatever, is easily some of the dumbest stuff that's been discussed in forever in GNR fandom lol

A lot of assumptions were made when the Monsters song title was discovered. No one assumed it was a lazy filing process on the GnR end, which it probably was. They were never one song or two parts of a whole. We also know how long a song can be on a 7" nowadays with modern records. So it was pretty silly to think that. A great find, but we as a whole shouldn't have jumped to any crazy conclusions. Now what's interesting is how closely related the two songs are, and what Monsters could be. A B-side for Atlas/the next single? Perhaps. But the big thing, for me, is that someone has unreleased NITL GnR recordings. Prior to the Monsters leak, I'm not sure we've had evidence that there were "new" songs being hoarded...

Do we need another thread? Can't we just rename the absence thread? Since this is why she's absent and there's already a tone of discussion going on in there

I think it's important wherever the discussion ends up on this site that the thread name includes the allegations in the subject. I don't think anyone wants to inadvertently underplay the seriousness of this for the sake of keeping the home page tidy and keeping the large thread alive. As we've all seen with how some of these news outlets work, they'll be crawling this site for a scoop or anything at all to report. Probably best to be as upfront as possible about what's being discussed on this forum and in these threads.

That's my two cents at least. There are going to be a lot of "outside" eyes reading these threads over the next few days and weeks.

Don't know if this has been posted yet but Robin Finck says that it's someone called Keith Scott on the demo for the General and  he had no input on it and he also wasn't on anything on the Locker leaks as Axl would mostly use session Guitarists for the songs

Iit's not that uncommon at all for bands to do this. NuGNR was a band that performed live, but it's hard to say a "band" recorded what we have from the CD era in the way a lot of people thought or hoped happened. Whether this video is fake or not doesn't change that we don't know for certain who played on what unless credited officially.

  5. I'm sure some people may say CITR, OMG, Better, CD, Perhaps, Prostitute. There is a little bit of everything for everyone depending on the style of music you like from GnR.

I'm going to go with... yes. Not that it's my favorite song to listen to, but I did think TWAT was the "best" of the CD era and by a good margin. I think Monsters edges it out by not retreading the lost love trope a lot of the GnR epics seem to be based around. It's like you merging the outro of Coma with some dark introspective Axl lyrics and then adding on all the CD era hallmarks. It's a damn good song.

  6. I think CD as a whole sort of reinforces that Axl isn’t much for a “songwriter” in the traditional sense (Dylan, Waits, etc.) There are a lot of songs with repeating verses, inaudible lyrics, and that more or less just sound cool and don’t go anywhere. He can write the hell out of a song though in terms of melodies and vocal notes. He’s a rock singer above all else. I almost feel his intentions are to use his vocals like an instrument vs creating lyrical masterpieces.

that being said, Monsters certainly does deliver on all fronts. It’s some of his best work in terms of writing and vocal performance. It’s pretty impressive a guy can go from writing a song like Shotgun Blues to Monsters within 10-15 years.

  7. Monsters > Perhaps > the General > Hard Skool > State of Grace > Atlas > Absurd > Eye on You

That’s how I’d rank the songs they’ve come out or leaked the past few years. Obviously have some recency bias. They’re certainly all over the place, much like CD. If the General and Monsters are one song then that’s the clear number one. Monsters adds a lot to the General. In a vacuum on its own I prefer Monsters and Perhaps.

I do think if we didn’t have the Village leaks that Perhaps would be heralded as the best of the batch.

  8. Part of me wonders if the record and potential digital releases were delayed due to having a song called Monsters being released on Halloween weekend with the subject matter covering child abuse and sexual assault. Pretty serious statement pieces from Axl, could see wanting to avoid any connections to Halloween.

Musically, these are thick songs. Like TWAT, Prostitute, Sorry, etc. they’re absolutely loaded with guitars, strings and a wall of sound. There is a great mix of the styles and elements Axl was going for across CD - cinematic epics, hip hop inspired beats, tons of vocal styles. All combined with Slash bringing his A game. Great stuff albeit a bit dated.

Axl has very few songs that showcase him as an introspective lyricist, these ones do. Particularly Monsters.  As a combined song they’re one of Axl’s best efforts post-UYI.

I wonder if Me & My Elvis is the third part of the trilogy, which is why Monsters had a working title of Elvis Presley & The Monster of Soul? Has that same doomy vibe, too good of an instrumental to never have vocals added.

I’m wondering what the connection is too because it does have a similar vibe.

It’s entirely possible that they mixed and matched vocal tracks on to different instrumentals. Not saying this happened here with that track. But they seemed to cut a lot of corners.

Something I’ve noticed that probably means sweet nothing but the date caught my attention, Biffy Clyro literally just announced an anniversary vinyl bundle, something I’d be interested in. The release date is December 8th, I don’t know why but I found that an odd coincidence considering the changed date of the Perhaps vinyl is also December 8th. Originally the release date for Perhaps was today obviously along with some other big releases today including a Prince SDE and a Taylor Swift album. They came out without a hitch. Are bigger artists or more popular/in demand releases getting priority over smaller releases? And that could be the issue Guns have run in to with Perhaps? And December 8th is a quieter time to release vinyl?

I'm not sure therea re any goals and incentives for GnR on the vinyl and release front. Perhaps is already out and it has ran its course. The physical media was just supplementary income to that. Sucks for us that there was an unheard song on it, but I don't think big picture it matters much to them or UMG or the general public.

I have to highjack your post though. Wayyy back in the day. In the thick of CD madness, I had some hand me down clips of a fake "leak" and had a forum member on CD.com offer to trade me for it. So I said sure. He sent over "Teeth or Mountains" by a band called Biffy Clyro. It was their single Mountains months before it was released. I had zero idea or clue who Biffy was, but the song fucked. now Biffy is an all time favorite band of mine.

  11. It wouldn't be surprising if people start receiving shipping information today and the record has next day delivery. Fairly common amongst records and video games to arrive on the day of release, even if it says that it's the shipping day. Also, we're basically at the point where if someone says they have tracking info, there really isn't much you can do to refute it. Those in America and the UK should either have the album tomorrow or have their tracking info. at the least.

This thread right now is how to set yourself up for disappointment 101 lol

That and people showing their ages with some of the terms used around here or people thinking they’d need to put a record player in their car to listen to the song while driving.

  13. I'm guessing tomorrow people will start getting their tracking information and see that the single is being 24 hour next day shipped. I haven't bought a piece of physical media in a long time taht wasn't out on the actual release day, even when websites say that it's the day the items ship. It's GnR though, so maybe it'll be half assed and arrive early next week.

  14. I'll be curious if it hits streaming services Friday. I expect it will. It makes sense it will. GnR actually makes money streaming, and that is king at the end of the day. I wouldn't be surprised though. It's a non-album B-side. Those aren't guarantees to end up online. Plus it's a little conspicuous they haven't had us pre-loading it or saving it. Usually bands and labels love any opportunity they can to get our data.

Personally, for myself. It honestly doesn't matter. If you're on this forum, you're going to find a pristine vinyl rip of it in the next few days anyways. It's not make or break. This is definitely not a song meant to win over new fans or be a chart topper. From what we've gathered over the years and knowing it has a chance to be exclusive to a 7".

NOVEMBER RAIN 7" (Only.Springsteen, Deep Purple and LedZep have put out similar lengths on 7" before)

Just thought I'd dump this here, since there has been a ton of arguments that it can't be over 5 minutes or it won't be 10 minutes, etc...it can be what they want BUT if you want good quality, it wiill most likely suffer....

There are definitely were a lot of long songs on 45s back in the day. Even in the 60s with something like American Pie they've been around. From being a big Bruce fan, I think there was a very particular process in both the mastering and pressing of the Fire 7" with the 10+ minute Incident on 57th Street. It's pretty widely regarded as a poor quality recording of one of the fanbase's most popular tracks. Likely true for all the Free Birds and November Rains laid to wax. The thing is, while records are in style and widely available now, there isn't much effort put into making them the definitive source of the material. The General is likely exported off a computer and compressed to fit whatever commercial available records they chose to press. Probably no extra measures were made to fit a longer than average song on that 7". Not that it can't be grand or epic in under 6 minutes.

This thread is just a constant circle of the same theories. Roll on the release so we can debate the song itself.. (which is definitely State of Grace reworked ;))

A handful of bands I like are releasing records this Friday. All of the discourse around their social medias and forums and subreddits are about people excited to get tracking numbers, last minute theories on the songs and concepts of the album, people sharing liner notes.

That's not quite the case here as we've entered in to the debating MSL's actions phase.

don't think they've ever made it available digitally.  It's out there, yes, but not officially from the band or label

Ironically enough, didn’t they release it as an MP3 back in the day? Not disputing what you’re getting at. I don’t think it’s wild for a band to release a physical only song, even GnR.

  18. I’ve mentioned before I felt the CD sessions produced a lot of elements to be mixed and matched into songs. Perhaps the General is the instrumental (think tour intro) and Monsters is the meat of the song (the part we speculate is about child abuse.) I’m sure the title will be the General, but we may have a look at the creative process with that song title. Sort of similar to Thyme and PRL on the Village sessions.

  19. December 31st tends to be the universal placeholder date. It appeared to me that GNR itself was handling the distribution of the Perhaps merch. Perhaps even the pressing of the records as well since GnR is its own UMG imprint. It still says 10/27 on the US GNR site and UK site. They still have paid advertising out there promoting the 27th. I'd think the 12/31 dates may be because the record is on backorder with those stores. It has been sold out and restocked before, so I think that's the most likely thing.

I will say it did seem like an incredibly quick turnaround on having records pressed. Announcement to release date being only two months. Not to say they couldn't of had them pressed prior. But, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the demand was underestimated and causing delays in Europe. The German GNR Merch site says 11/3, if I had to guess that would be when another wave of the records are available there. Americans and Brits should receive tracking info next Tuesday or Wednesday. I guess that's when we'll know for sure. Perhaps being "delayed" made sense because it was never announced. The record was announced and promoted for 10/27, so I have a hard time believing the majority of people who pre-ordered won't be receiving it on that date.
