The amount of negativity in this thread makes me sick.
You would think we're still living in 1980 when great hard rock was part of the mainstream, and classic albums were seemingly being released every week. In this day and age I'm more than happy to get hard rock as well-written and performed as SMKC. I guess I'm just not that picky. I really can't afford to be picky in an era where one has to dig pretty deep to find good hard rock. Negativity is a problem everywhere though, not just on forums like this. I wish that wasn't true.

Let There Be Rock by a country mile. One of the best concert films ever.
Let There be Rock is awesome! Great performances! I love how Angus gets so exhausted from running around that he needs to get oxygen! I had to get this on Blu Ray. Great sound and picture, for how old it is! I would love to get an entire pro-shot concert from '80 or '81. Not sure if any exist.

Angus checked out some of Axl's recent vocal performances and decided - FUCK THAT !
That's why I keep scratching my head trying to understand why so many people want Axl to record with Slash and Duff. The likelihood of it being good due to Axl's bad vocals and tendency towards taking forever to write ultimately mediocre songs is very slim. If it happened, I would check it out, if only for Slash. Maybe if we were still living in 1996....

Yeah, and then find away to turn the clock back to 1996.

Im honestly not sure if I understand the whole generic thing. Like generic in general or generic for Slash?
Concise, streamlined, to-the-point I can understand. Its formulaic in a way that would make Sam Phillips or Lennon and McCartney proud - grabbing intro, groovy verse, uplifting chorus, tension building middle 8, tension releasing solo, climaxing performance of chorus. With ear catching riffs and bits throughout.
Cool bits like the riff in the verse is tasty with the 2 guitar interplay and the interval of the harmony lick that repeats on the tail is a very interesting choice imo. And to hear a Slash solo with a vintage phase tone is a treat. Going by the video he played it on through soap bar pickups!
Yeah, I don't quite get the whole "generic" thing either. We need to remember that we're not living back in 1980 when great hard rock was all over the radio and new classics were coming out every week. Hard rock is definitely not in the mainstream any longer, so I think it's important to appreciate someone like Slash who is still releasing well-written, well-performed hard rock that's influenced by the great hard rock of the good old days. With riffs, solos and melodies like those on Slash's recent albums (yes, I still think in terms of albums), I'm inclined to overlook the shortcomings of whatever singers he's working with.

Funny, cause there’s so many people here that dont like the current gnr but are the most active ones in those threads.
I'm guessing that a lot of people (sadly) get more "fun" out of reacting negatively than positively, to any topic. It's not unusual in any fan forum.

I like it, it's a grower for sure. It sounds better each time i listen
I agree. I read a quote from Myles where he described the riff as “reminiscent of vintage Aerosmith,” and I can totally hear that. I'm a huge Aerosmith fan by the way, as is Slash.

You heard it here first folks, Slashs fanbase now is a generation of pop fans. He has a singer that is a pop singer, who never sings pop, but he somehow still is a pop singer. Absurd? Not in the least! Fuck, just like Myles I never sang pop in my life, can I qualify as a pop singer too?
Someone needs to let Slash know this immediately. 😀

definitely a good track, sounds like a continuation of the stuff on world on fire which is ok by me cause i liked the album lot
Yeah, the production/sound on this new song is very similar to the sound on World on Fire, which is a very good thing. I think Apocalyptic Love might be slightly better song-wise, but WOF just sounds so good!

Why are they even in this thread if they don't care about SMKC in any way? It's so annoying and played out.
Great post!

Listened a few times now.. Not bad not great.. The music is good but Myles just somehow makes it sound very similar to almost everyone of their other songs. There really isn't a thing about it that makes it stand apart..
The heavy opening riff really stood out for me. I didn't expect it.

Okay as a huge SMKC fan finally gave in and listened to it after I decided I wanted to hear the whole album at once when it comes out, but all your comments made me worried it will be shit, lol.
I like it a LOT! The chorus is what I consider to be "good timey", just like Crazy Life or songs like that and I love CL. Maybe good timesy-sounding rock is not for everyone but certainly for me. They obviously picked the most accessible song for radio so there you go. People who didn't like AL or WOF shouldn't really expect anything different and expect to be amazed suddenly. Slash is not gonna do a 180.
The solo is great and some guy said it sounded like Ghost and the intro lick is very similar and in the same key indeed! I love the uplifting lyrics aswell, I think Myles does those incredibly well (see "All Ends Well" from AB, Iris Of The Storm for example).
The bridge is obviously done intentionally as a reference to SITS as apparent by the lyrics so I find it dumb to give them shit for it. God forbid one song in your catalog does something cool that fans will pick out and recognize. I'm glad I listened to it and I'm so stoked for another new album by one of my favourite bands. When WOF came out I just started college and I have lots of great memories listening the shit out of that album and the songs still take me back, can't wait for this album to do the exact same thing for me for another chapter of my life.
It also seems to be either unintentionally, or intentionally leaked but to look unintentional. If they really wanted to release it that day it would've been on Youtube with some kind of video/lyric video for it. I expected it to come out July 25th a day after the last GNR show and I still think that's gonna be the "official" release of this single.
And also how epic are the chord changes underneath the solo torward the end?
Maybe good timesy-sounding rock is not for everyone but certainly for me. Amen to that brother!

I need to preface my post by saying I'm a huge Slash fan, and that's why I joined this forum. I loved Axl in his prime, saw GNR as I want to remember them live in '91, and Appetite and the Illusion albums will always be favorites of mine. I've also been a big fan of SKMC since I first heard Apocalyptic Love in 2012. My opinion of SKMC and this new song are not tainted in any way by a desire to see Slash record new music with Axl, mostly because I don't think the current Axl is really up to it, or more importantly, has the desire. If we were still living in 1996, I would be all for it, but since we're not, I prefer to see Slash doing his own thing. Rather than make a badass hard rock album in the same vein as Appetite, I can easily see Axl taking an extended amount of time trying to reinvent the rock and roll wheel rather than just make a kickass rock album.
As to the new song, I like it. The first thing that struck me was the heaviness of the opening riff. That was unexpected..in a good way! The chorus is very catchy. I listened to the song two times back to back, and the chorus is firmly stuck in my head. The solo is typical Slash tastiness. I really look forward to hearing the new album.

I always quite liked his voice but to be honest there is a side of me which wouldn't care if Posh Spice was singing: I listen to Slash's stuff for the guitars.
Yep, Slash is the main attraction for me, not the singer, whoever it happens to be. I do like Myles though, for the most part. Sometimes he'll get annoying to me when he sings in his upper register, on certain songs ("One Last Thrill" comes to mind), but on the whole, I like him, and the Conspirators are just straight up badass! Great band!

Angus.
I'm not positive, but I believe Malcolm wrote a lot of the great AC/DC riffs.

This topic has made me think about all the great lyrics Bon Scott wrote. Here are some of my favorite Bon Scott lines:
"She was number nine, ninety-nine on the clinical list /And I fell in love with the dirty little bitch"
"Being a bad boy ain't that bad/I've had me more dirty women than most men ever had"
"I know I ain't doing much/Doing nothing means a lot to me"
"Outta my way I'm a running high
Take a chance with me and give it a try
Ain't no woman in the world I know
'Cause I ain't lookin' for an overflow"And many more.... -

Why not? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he write the lyrics for much of Appetite? It's So Easy, Anything Goes, Out Ta Get Me. Pretty straight forward lyrics if you ask me and not that far off from some of AC/DC's lyrics.
Straight forward, but a lot more pissed off....in a good way!

I'll give you that, The Lemon Song was a direct rip off of Wolf's Killing Floor. Plant ripped the lyrics from Dixon's You Need Love for Whole Lotta Lova but Page wrote the riff for it.
And what a great riff it is! the Whole Lotta Love riff, and the whole song for that matter, is pretty much sex put to music...and I mean that in a good way! Pure rock and roll as it should be, with balls and attitude!

70's Queen is some of my all-time favorite rock. When Queen wanted to be heavy they could be HEAVY. "Stone Cold Crazy" is possibly the first ever thrash metal (or close to it) song. I can imagine how it must have sounded to listeners back in 1974! Queen could be epic too. The lead break in the middle of "Father to Son" sounds like how I imagine the Apocalypse will sound! So much drama! Queen were songwriters on a very high level.
-
I voted Page because not only is he one of my favorite riff writers, he plays the ballsier hard rock that I prefer. I don't think you can compare Page and Richards too easily since their styles are so different. This thread is inspiring me to listen to some Zep!

I thought WOF was great! There were a few songs though that I think should have been cut out (Shadow Life, Stone Blind, Safari Inn) And then there were some songs that I think are the best of Slash's solo career, The Unholy, Battleground, Iris Of The Storm just to name a few.
I thought World on Fire was great, especially the production. That drum sound! Some of the songs are borderline filler, but they're all listenable. I love Shadow Life's riff! Stone Blind's chorus is a little bit lackluster, but again, Slash's riffing is strong. Wicked Stone is all-around badass, and so is the riff to Withered Delilah.

One of the few lists without Anastasia...
I think a list with a Best Of Slash would be interesting. Like a best of album with lets say 14 songs post 2010. There's enough material to choose from.
If this had been a top 10 list instead of top 5, Anastasia would have made it. Apocalyptic Love and World on Fire have a lot of good songs. So does Contraband. I'm not that familiar with the second VR album.

This is an old thread, but it's interesting Here are mine:
Velvet Revolver:
Sucker Train Blues
Slither
Dirty Little Thing
Big Machine
Set me Free
SMKC:
Halo
World on Fire
Wicked Stone
Apocalyptic Love
Automatic Overdrive
Many other SMKC songs could have made the list.

Axl is perfect for AC/DC
I agree. AC/DC suits his voice better now, and when he gets into the studio to record with Angus, et al, my guess is that he will just focus on making an AC/DC album (probably a really good one) rather than spend years trying to come up with something ground-breaking that will change the history of rock 'n' roll and make everyone forget about "Appetite" once and for all.
