Not the electronic verse drums, but the real drums in the chorus are clipping all over the place. It's most noticeable in the fills leading into and out of the chorus, can you hear a 'click' or static kind of sound on the kick beats?

Are we listening to same vinyl rip? Original digital version is clipping like crazy on almost every bassdrum kick, but vinyl rip has almost no clipping...

screw you guys for pointing out the clipping, because now (I think) I can't unhear it!

I think I can hear something between 1:09 and 1:12, something like two or three clicks/thuds in the background or buried under the guitar while Axl is saying "I never took the time". Especially at 1:11. Can anyone else hear it at that part? I can't tell if my ears are inventing something or not.

U lucky deaf bastards :D I can hear every single clicking... must be hundreds in song. And amen to person who uploaded that vinyl rip on youtube.... Finally I can enjoy the song

In the chorus especially it is pretty audible, in particular if you listen to the kick drum hits

You will hear it sound distorted, but not in an intentional way like electronic/industrial music where the drums can intentionally all sound overloaded for effect - in this case it will sound similar to if you blew out cheap speakers.  "Crackling" is the best descriptive term I can use for it

So, I'm super hard of hearing these days. Sometimes songs just sound muddy or muted, and The General leak and official streaming sounded only a little different to me. Both a bit muddy...

The vinyl by far is the superior version, and I can pick up a lot of layers I was missing on the other versions.

Almost hard to believe this is vinyl rip... just sounds like the the proper digital mix we never got

A vinlyl rip, even a good one is gonna loose a bit of quality digitally compared to a CD/download. The clipping probably got lost in the transfer

Did u listen to it? It's weird but this rip seems to sound better in every way unlike vinyl rips I've heard before, which like U said always sounded warmer, but without so much high end. Makes me think we got some major fuck up with digital release

Can anyone please explain to me like I’m a 2 year old what this clipping issue is?

All the answers are in this thread already

While I am aware of clipping in a general sense and know it has been on ongoing issue for years, I typically do not immediately hear it unless someone points it out to me. That being said, the second the chorus kicked in during "The General" I immediately heard it; I thought something was wrong with my headphones for a second. I listened to it on Spotify, Tidal, and Amazon Music and heard it in all versions.

Same....I just hope someday song gets fixed for album release or any other way so I can listen to it withot thoes annoying cracking sounds

I can still hear clipping occasionally after I've turned it off (maybe my laptop speakers are just bad since it's an old one), but if you're on a laptop, make sure to turn off any of that weird speaker-audio-enhancer software that's bundled with laptops. Maybe the mix will still sound terrible (i don't have a good ear for that stuff), but it will make it sound less bad.

(e.g. my laptop has this dolby audio setting that was automatically enabled. It's different for each laptop depending on what was bundled with it.

Top is the official General recorded from youtube with it enabled.

Middle is the official General release from youtube with it disabled.

    Bottom was the leaker's file.)

If you're listening to it on Spotify, make sure to find the normalisation setting and turn it off. Some Swifties were complaining the Taylor's versions were mixed terribly, but then after finding that setting and turning it off, it sounded better.

Makes no difference... mix is just clipping like crazy, because... well, it's mixed like that. Mind boggling how can someone approve release of this

Hahahaha thanks mate😅 maybe invest in some decent headphones and actually listen to the apple music version. Sounds like youre just hating on it cos you dont like the song

    1) I love the song and that's the reason why I hate the way mix sounds... it could be so much better with decent mix and master. Just listen to it back to back with any other properly mixed track ;)

    2) Apple version is the same as on other digital platforms

    3) I think my 2 sets of studio monitors or Senheiser headphones are just fine :D

    Will not be done.

And its not so bad that some of you are saying.

It has been a general problem in music business for years and I am very aware and against the loudness wars, but you could find equally examples from  hundreds of well known bands. Death Magnetic were miles worse as were some of the releases from U2, Bon Jovi etc.

I agree with - will not be done :(

Just listened to Death Magnetic single... brickwalled to max, but still somehow listenable unlike The General
