SomeonElse Review

Straight from the mean streets of New York City, life for SomeonElse is probably all a bit surreal. New York city is filled with thousands of people of all different areas of work, each trying to make their own in this dreary post modern society. Quite fitting that their debut album is entitled The Doomed then really.

Tearing your face off on the opening track, Winter In July, SomeonElse have got a unique feel to them. It’s not quite post hardcore although the vocals on the album have a hint of Daryl Palumbo from Glassjaw but it’s not quite metal. It’s hard rock with a hint of post-hardcore which works surprisingly well. While Glassjaw take their time on their upcoming album, SomeonElse can happily fill the void that they have left along with Letlive.

Songs like Faust are almost scary to listen to, with it’s slow melody and eerie vocals, it sends shivers down your spine. Wake Up has a slight La Dispute feel to it, while Comatose is almost like a ballad. Ballads are the band of quite a lot of listeners musical experience, but let’s see past that and say this is a slow spine tingling banger of a song.

Chaos Theory…Blind Ambition is the obvious highlight of the entire album. Heavy enough to rip a hole in the ozone layer and tight as fuck – just what the doctor ordered. Silencio builds up to an epic crescendo as it comes crashing to a halt whilst Bad Luck Charm shows a much darker side to SomeonElse. Caught (In The Floor) is a stand out track as it has more of a classic rock feel to it, it feels almost out of place but it’s a great change of pace and tone just before the album finishes with a band on the heavy The American Scheme.

SomeonElse should probably consider renaming themselves Something Else, as that’s exactly what they are. They are heavy, tight and best of all a fucking great band. Mixing alternative rock with post-hardcore and turning everything up to 11 is the kind of thing the industry needs right now.

For fans of: Glassjaw, Letlive., La Dispute.
