For one thing The Smiths were much more literary lyrically(Not that Stone Roses were bad) and Stone Roses had much more jamming/improv type of material-more psychedelic as well. I know what you mean with the lyrics and attitude to their music and direction. This topic wasn't meant to spark much debate, sorry, just had to vent my immediate thoughts.
