  1. I love that description of Angel Dust "the most uncommercial follow up to a hit record ever." That's why it was so good and revered among musicians.

Is there a chance FNM gets a lot of new fans and there is new appreciation for the old stuff thanks to this new praise and exposure? Or will they forever be niche?

  2. What have you guys seen in terms of response from critics? I've read maybe 5 reviews from actual outlets, not just some guys blog, and so far the critical response is positive. Theyre praising how lean the album is which I agree with. It's short but doesnt waste a minute

Dickbags in the comments were like "its not that good, low energy, I want Jim Martin" but I shouldnt even be paying attention to comments. Bets on the Pitchfork score? I'll go with 7.8

  3. Just an incredible show. Patton is as good live as you'd think, pulls off all the crazy stuff. Hudson was a pleasant surprise. They're just a bunch of pros. Main difference from the Detroit set:

-Land of Sunshine instead of From Out of Nowhere

    -Be Aggressive! Pleasant surprise.

    -Digging the Grave and matador

    -Last cup of sorrow

-Closed with I started a joke

Highlight to me was Caffeine. That song just sounds incredible live. The new stuff translates well live too. Sunny Side up worked well.

All in all one of the best shows I've seen in awhile, check them out if you can

  4. That's a solid set list. I'll be at the show tonight but I'm American and don't have a Canadian phone, so I likely won't post until Sunday. I'll post any highlights since the set list will be easy to find

I wish yahoo gave view counts. Would like to know how many people watched

Is it weird to anyone else that they play pre Patton stuff like Spirit? There is a ton of Patton stuff to choose from and that's how everyone knows them. Would much rather hear Be Aggressive, Just a Man or Malprctice than Spirit or As The Worm Turns

  5. Setlist tonight was good, but not what I'm hoping for myself. I'm spoiled after the last shows set where they played the first half of the show with only new songs. I'd love for that, but don't know if I'll get anything like it. Hoping though.

Still excited for next Saturday either way.

So you'd rather they play more new stuff? Hmm. See I saw a setlist in CA where the first 6 songs were new. I think that's a little weird given that the album isnt even out yet. Its FNM so I honestly wouldnt care if they came out and did Gregorian monk chants for 2 hours, but still I think you'd want to hear a lot of older stuff. Thats why most of us are going.

Is it me or are they playing a lot of KFAD on this tour? Thats not a complaint, I love that, but I find it noteworthy

  6. Thanks for the responses/recommendations all. I have Lone Bellow and Brandi Carlisle on my spotify queue for today.

I have been big into Lera Lynn ever since the True Detective Season 2 trailer launched. She sings the song in the trailer that is yet to be released. Here's an actual released track of hers

And the TD trailer if you missed

  7. Drive by Truckers are one of my favorite current bands. I love how their lyrics tell complex tales and build rich characters inside of just 3-4 minute songs.

DBT are probably one of the best bands of the 2000's in my eyes. That stretch of Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, The Dirty South, is just great.

I agree fully on DBT. I even like the stuff that came out after Isbell left, Go Go Boots is a sleeper, but yeah their peak was at the Dirty South. They are incredible live if you havent seen them, I'd make it happen

Hank III is great, his shows are like 4 hours long and he spans his entire career through different sets. he even has a quick metal set.

Lots of good bands listed here so far. I recently saw Lydia Loveless in a bar that holds like 200 people and she was great, I also think she was hammered. It only helped her performance, especially when she tried some Hank Sr. covers

  8. I see a lot of threads based around rock (which is expected) but I wanted to see if anyone here is into indie folk/alt country/neo southern rock. I'm talking stuff like Jason Isbell, Drive By Truckers, Wilco, Sturgill Simpson, Lydia Loveless, Whitey Morgan and the 78s, Blackberry Smoke, Heartless Bastards, Houndmouth, etc. Any fans?

Jason Isbell, formerly of DBT, just put out a great new track:

  9. Welp, that was a tough one for the Habs. It's not over til it's over of course but it's an uphill battle to say the least. Given MTL's possession stats this isn't totally surprising though. TBL are the picture of scoring depth, tough to match up. Also, Therrien had his bottom 6 out there on the last shift. Anyway, WSH-TBL will be a fun conference final.

They've really caught fire at the right time. I feel bad for Price, honestly. Hard to imagine he wins the Hart after this collapse - he still ought to get the Vezina, but it's hard to see a playoff collapse like this still end up with the MVP. 2.35 GAA when the cookies are on the table just don't cut it.

If I had to guess right now, I'd have to say Hawks beat the Ducks for the West, Bolts beat the Caps for the East, and who fuckin' knows what happens from there?

Is it not like baseball where they vote right when the season ends? MVP is for the season only so I don't think this will or should take him out of the race. The language on the trophy reads "most valuable to his team." I look at that as "if the team lost this guy, how much would it have impacted them?" Without Price I'm not sure the Habs even make the playoffs. Though you could prob say that about Ovechkin too, and much like the Cy Young/MVP, people tend to default to the "goalies/pitchers have their own award, they shouldnt get the MVP." I dont agree with that, but it happens a lot. Though goalies winning the Hart is more frequent than pitchers winning the MVP, at least recently. Jose Theodore anyone? (also: Hasek totally deserved the back to back Harts he got. Guy was a legend)

So maybe you're right, maybe he doesnt and shouldnt win it. Tough call.

  11. Just listened to it. Holy shit. I'm stunned. I have been a long time fan and am thrilled by it. It's like a darker, denser and at times oddly catchier version of Album of the Year. But updated. Highlights are Sunny Side up and Rise of the Fall.

Yes Patton is incredible, I do think Roddy's piano lines might be the MVP. sets a good atmosphere

I will still buy it but I had to torrent. I'm seeing them in Toronto Saturday and I know they'll play a bunch of it. So damn excited. If you're a fan, I think you'll like it

  12. Interesting that Calgary and Montreal could be on their way out, given that both teams were near the bottom of the league in possession. if they're bounced, then every team left will have been top tier in possession stats except Anaheim who were mid pack and they trended up toward the end of the year. While those stats arent guarantees they have been great predictors over the past few years.

And yet there will still be the idiots out there yelling that advanced stats aren't real, talent is intangible, nerds need to leave the game alone, etc. Advanced puck possession stats are for real, folks.

THE ONLY STATS THAT MATTER ARE WINS, HEART AND GRIT!!!!

hah. I don't see why people are resistant to them. They just provide advanced intelligence is all. Anything you can do to understand the game further. Also its funny when a team like Calgary pops up people are always like WHERE ARE YOUR FANCY STATS NOW! I mean, statistical anomalies happen. The stats aren't gospel, just general indicators. Brian Burke will be signing 6'7 goons to his team until he's dead.

  13. Scoring is quite low right now. The avg save percentage right now is .924, higher than it was in the "dead puck" era. Goals per game is comparable to then as well. The NHL seems to be turning a blind eye to this. Hockey fans dont mind a good 1-0 tight checking game but you'll never grow the game that way.

Also, good thoughts on scoring depth and how it's lead to the lighting's success. They have barely got anything out of Stamkos and Callahan but are still succeeding thanks to good depth on offense

  14. hamels would be mediocre in the AL east IMO. a mid 4 era in his career vs the american league IIRC.

Perhaps but he is quality pitcher, signed for 3 more years and could be their ace. It might take better prospects to pry him from the Phils as he has a 3 more years on his contract though

Cueto may be a stud but he is a FA after this year and might want Scherzer money if he has a good year so might be 1 year rental with no compensation if he signs elsewhere under the new rules. That being said he should take lesser quality prospects to get him if the Reds decide to move him.

Either way IMHO I think the Sox need to make a big move for some pitching if they have any hope of winning it all this year. Even if they make it to the playoffs I can't see them going far without a stud starter or two and a few relievers. Could be tough to remake their staff in season.

it is not looking good for the Sox. Hopefully Hanley's injury is minimal. Thing is, would an "ace" even solve the problems at this point? Kelly, bucholz and Miley have been pretty bad, so it'd take more than one guy. I say bring Rodriguez up already

  15. I think Chris Young is due to regress. As is Tex's power. The bullpen though? Not so much. As long as those guys stay healthy that could be one of the strongest pens in the league all year. I have no idea how you hit Betances. 97mph then to a nasty curve.

What about the SPs though? Can Pineda do this all year? Eovaldi has been good but his fly ball % is currently below his career average. Does that speak to technique change or is that going to correct itself and lead to more HRs?

  16. I dont think Hamels is washed up right at this moment His peripherals are still good. By the end of that contract? yeah that will be a problem. Hell even in like 2 years maybe. So youre right there is risk. But if youre in "win now" mode, lijke he's the piece you need, he's not a bad play in a vacuum. But as a few have pointed out, Amaro's asking price is currently too high. From the cubbies he probably wants Schwarber. But wouldnt you do it if it was built around Baez?

Also isnt someone here a Reds fan? Will Cueto be in play this year? If I'm a team like the Sox or Cubs, I'm trying to go all in on Cueto if I can. Yeah he'd be a rental but man what a rental. of course the A's last year didn't make the idea of rentals look appealing, but still....

  17. I kinda hope baltimore has vendors just walking up and down the aisles in silence. that would up the weird factor

Classicrawker you are correct on the Sox bullpen. They need to do triage on their pitching situation as a whole. In regards to Hamels though I am struggling to think who else fits the criteria for Hamels. They need to have prospects, financial flexibility and need to be a contender. he has a no trade clause. The Rangers come to mind but theyre not in contention. The Cardinals maybe but they generally dont make trades like that. Could Billy Beane step in? Maybe. The Dodgers will always be mentioned but I think that'd be a dumb move for them. Andrew Friedman doesn't play like that. To me the Sox simply fit all the criteria. The Padres possibly too given Preller's freewheeling ways.
