I like Slash's version much more personally.  I never thought there was anything that noteworthy about Robin's version let alone anything epic about it lol what specifically about Robin's solo do you like?  Any particular melodic motifs or note choices that catch your ear?

Y'all defending Slash's solo have to be purposefully trolling, or being contrarians lol. It is a terrible solo. Honestly probably the worst Slash solo of any GNR song that comes to mind. Embarrassingly bad.

For me the thing to really debunk the rumor would be the missing of his signature Red Special lead tone during the Perhaps solo, I can hear it on Atlas and Catcher but on Perhaps there are some lyrical lines being played but not with the tone and vibrato I would attribute to Brian

Haha, this is wild to me. You seem to know a little bit about guitar. I hear Brian's tone and phrasing in that original version, painfully obvious to me. Listen to it and listen to his Catcher solo and it sounds identical to me. The tone is unmistakable to me. Like, I would literally bet my life on it lol.

If I may add, I don't think Brian May ever played on Perhaps, at least the Village Session demo that leaked - I am pretty sure that is Robin taking the lead and Brian only having done Catcher and Atlas, as well as according to Tommy some preliminary stuff on Riad way back when

Really? That is insanely clear to me that it's Brian May playing on that original demo. His guitar sound is unmistakable to me. Its sooooo something he would play. I might be imagining it but I was thinking he had confirmed that it was him playing on there. I remember the very first time I listened to it, I was like "that's one of the Brian May songs!!"

  4. Always been a fan of the song, I actually really dig this version, they did the best with this out of the 3 they've redone, but my God, what were they thinking with this Slash solo?? This song begs for an epic Slash solo, but instead, we get 15 seconds of him where it sounds like half his strings are breaking and the other half are way out of tune. How did they hear that and think "that's the one!"?? I didn't expect it to top Brian May's solo (I LOVED his original one), but this is AWFUL. The rest of the song sounds pretty fantastic.

  5. While I'm in the US and didn't get to see any shows live, purely as an online spectator, I will say that they kind of impressed me, from everything I seen from the tour. Sure, Axl's vocals are horrendous and Slash's playing has progressively gotten worse, but Axl has looked and acted better than he has in years. He legitimately looks like he's having a good time and putting in effort for the first time in years and years.

  6. Out of all the songs on CD, "Street of Dreams" was the one closest to Slash's wheelhouse. He didn't have to play it note for note, but he wasn't even in the same stratosphere. And its a pretty simple solo. Im an amateur and can play that solo note for note. Its obviously not because he *can't* play it, its because he doesn't care. These guys are just collecting paychecks at this point.

  7. I love Riad. I dont think its some great masterpiece but it's a fun aggressive song. Really like a lot of the guitar parts and Axl's vocals are fantastic. I just feel like the final version was very copy and pasted. And I really miss the "my Bedouin" line at the end. Some of the live versions in '02 were pretty impressive, imo, and you can tell its a song the band was really into playing.

  8. It's really just intangible. He has so many things about him that generally fascinate people. Obviously, his musical talent is first. He has an insanely unique, even polarizing voice. He has the kind of voice that people just connect with. And it was the perfect voice to deliver that music to the world. A perfect marriage. He has the kind of voice that just reaches into your soul. And he has always been magnetic when it comes to him being a front man and showman. His dance moves, his swagger, his various styles through the years. He's just the kind of guy that draws your attention and that you can't look away from. The other part is his legend and persona. I remember being younger in the late 80s and early 90s, everyone was fascinated with every move he made. Whether it was his various arrests and trials and fights and riots, he was everywhere. At that time, he was on the level of Michael Jackson and Madonna, as far as being a part of the pop culture zeitgeist. Then of course, him disappearing kept his legend alive, and the interest has never went away really.

    Here's what I get out of Hardschool/Checkmate/Jackie Chan/Whatever:

"To extend myself and lend you my hand...and when we do it, yeah we do it your way. Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away. Too hardschool and you thought you were here to stay, if that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway. As tempers fade, and lies forgiven..."
