Why do people get so excited about AFD99? Am I missing something? Isn't it just the 99 version of GnR covering the album?

I'd much rather hear brand new music as opposed to hearing a different version of GnR musicians covering what might be the best rock album of all time.  Appetite is almost as perfect as you can get.

I quite liked '02 GNR's take on the Appetite songs. I would be EXTREMELY interested to hear their studio versions. They added some unique and different touches.

  2. I've believed for years that TB is the absolute worst thing that ever happened to Axl and GNR as an entity. I think they have brainwashed Axl and just sunk their claws into him over the last 25 years and controlled him and his career. Not to mention the other "yes men" that leech off of him, like Del. How many other rock singers do you see with such a cabal around them like Axl has? I blame them for pretty much anything bad that's happened in the last 25 years.

Context is everything, so remember that 9/11 had happened earlier that year and we were suddenly at war in the middle east.  There was a video montage of clips of war, and audio/scenes from the 1970's movie "Network" ( I think?!?) with a general theme of "Arabs controlling oil" among other things.  It ended with a red white and blue GNR logo, that was featured on one of the t-shirts from the show.  I have that T-shirt somewhere, come to think of it.

Robin was pissed on the first night (29th) because the sound was brutal.  It was so bad that Axl left the stage, and Tommy sang most of OMG.  Robin threw his guitar towards one of the techs, and he meant business.  I've seen this band over 50 times going back to 1988, and it was perhaps the only time other than the St. Louis show that I felt like it may go south quickly.  It actually got better, but it was a disaster eating to happen.

Are you sure you're not talking about the same intro video that was used in '02 during the Europeans shows, with the clips of war and violence with the audio from "The Exorcist 3"? ("I believe in death, I believe in disease, I believe in torture and anger and hate, etc.")

Great audience...and some really good cameras they have

But man Axl looks so tired and fed up with all this, no doubt he's making the effort for the audience but for the most part the whole band just seems to be going through the motions by now. Absolutely no edge whatsoever anymore, just a machine, a streamlined product - every show is just like the other, the only difference is Axl's form of the day. Maybe they really should take a little break and then go into the studio, cut the sets down to 2 hours and come back fresh and with a little more energy.

On a sidenote...did Slash ever even listen to what Robin Finck was doing on CD? What he plays on "Better" ain't bad but that song has a totally different (and awesome!) guitar solo. What happened to slides, bends and emotion? He's just shredding like a motherfucker, he doesn't even sound like himself anymore. Same goes for Estranged and November Rain, just emotionless noodling. Has everyone forgotten how absolutely fantastic these guitar solos once sounded?

That's been one of my biggest complaints with the reunion is Slash just needlessly shredding everything. Slash isn't a shredder. Slash's strengths has always been his feeling and emotion and sense of melody. While I'll always prefer the original Chinese material, I was curious and open minded to hear Slash's interpretations but have been sorely disappointed.

  5. TIL leads me to believe Axl has a legit issue. He looks and sounds like he is literally in pain and hurting from singing. I know that's a demanding song but damn. I've never been big on the whole Mickey thing but close your eyes and you hear Mickey Mouse. This is ridiculous.

  6. I'm consistently amazed by Evader's talent but how anyone listened to his version and thought it was the real deal is pretty mind boggling to me. And I certainly don't mean that as a slight against him, as his potential is inhibited by the logistics of using the Rock Band stems and a terrible version to go off of. So I don't mean any disrespect at all, I'm a huge fan. But after listening to the podcast (big fan!!), I was bumfuzzled at how anyone could ever confuse this as being a legit version???

I  saw them in Nashville in 2011. There were a lot of empty seats, but it was still a good show. Even DJ Ashba had a good night. They also played Civil War for the first time since Slash was in the band.

I was at that show, but I was down on the floor in the front row, and I don't remember that many empty seats. Seemed pretty full to me. Back then, a lot of major rock bands skipped Nashville, so pretty much any decent sized shows I went to sold really well.

It affects their image. If you were a musician and your music was being played at a Nazi rally, and then people thought you were a Nazi, would you still feel like it affected nothing?

Oh for fuck's sake. No one with 1/10th of a brain is going to associate a band with a politician simply because their song got played over the PA before a speech. I've been to political rallies and they literally just play an assortment of music, all different genres and eras. There really is no more to it than that.

  9. Absolutely not. I feel like Slash has been the weak link in the reunion. He still has the talent, but it's his choice in what he plays. He does way more mindless noodling now than I'd ever heard him do in all the years before. I think of the CD songs and with songs like Sorry and Better, they were ripe for a really cool, soulful Slash solo and they're actually shit, *especially* This I Love. While I love Robin's solo, I was very curious to see what Slash was gonna come up with and in my mind, I imagined NR levels of epic, but got bullshit.

  10. One thing about these after parties, they usually aren't full of fans. I went to one back in 2011, and there was a small group of us normal fans, but the vast majority of people in there were more VIP types, radio people, personal friends of the band, other musicians, etc. If they had been playing a cd like this, most of the people in that room probably wouldn't have even known it was unreleased music or anything.

  11. I've never understood the logic in choosing covers over original material, especially in a situation as unique as this, with these particular members playing together for the first time in over 20 years. I don't mind a cover here and there, especially when it's to honor someone that's passed or something along those lines, but for the band to consistently be playing Wichita Lineman and Black Hole Sun over, say, You're Crazy and The Garden, is absurd to me. I honestly think that the overriding factor is that Axl is finally tired of Guns and would rather do other material.
