  1. After listening to all 30 of the guys on this list, I can't help but wonder why guitar playing has taken a few steps back over the years. With few exceptions, I thought the entire list of these "revolutionary players" just plain sucked!

If this is the list of best players over the last 20-30 years, guitar playing has really hit a dry spell.

Wow man, what a backwards view. What are you looking for in modern guitarists? The fact of the matter is, guitar playing can't really go anywhere besides ridiculously fast shredding, or Tom Morello-esque effects fucking shit up. Both of those options would leave the music horribly inaccessible, so it's down to the likes Matt Bellamy, Jack White etc to play guitar in different ways, styles, and using different sounds for guitar to reinvent itself. Most bands today wouldnt exist without a huge portion of this list, and many of the people on the list are probably hugely influenced by other guys on the list like Marr and Squier to Noel Gallagher.

Your right, maybe I really havn't followed all these guys and their music enough to appreciate them.

  2. Many of you guys may know of this band, and I have Ive heard they were the next big thing, even revolutionary. After a few listens to their material, I just can't board the Volta Train.

I still don't know why so many people appeal to this band, they just don't do anything for me. How do you guys feel about this group?

  6. I'm hoping Ashba will have a large influence on an Album, that guy knows how to make a decent Record, Look at his work with Sixx AM.

    Bones--

I'd actually prefer Robin. He brings something really distinct/unique to the table. Love him or hate him, his parts on ChiDem are as unique and intelligible as Slash's old solos were. You know it's Finck as soon as you hear it.

I was a critic of his back in the day, mainly because he was always forced to cover Slash when they performed live; but hearing his work on his own material, it's evident that the dude helped shape the new band's sound and helped them become something more than just a glorified cover band in the studio.

When there is a follow up, you can bet your ass things will sound alot different lol!

Im only (a little) worried about how ashba's style will translate into studio material. His style is not original, and a little too basic even compared to Robin. I do like what he brings to the live shows though.

  7. Going to see em for the first time headlining Download Festival in June. I've listened to a fair bit of their stuff but wouldn't call myself an expert.

Anybody recommend the essential Albums I should be getting? Want to brush up before the gig so I know more than half the setlist.

    Cheers all.

    Wait....tthey kicked out steven right?

  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zm5c7mKjrQ

I heard a song on the radio a few years back that re-used the Van Halen lick from :36-:39

I'll just point out that Buckethead used the same lick in his song "Binge and Grab". Either unintentional or just Buckethead paying homage to Eddie in the same way he payed homage to Randy Rhoads by using a Crazy Train style riff in the song "Welcome to Bucketheadland".

    Round and round anyone?

  9. Shes is probably one of the best guitarists in the world.

    Aha- ahahhh- hahah-

    no.

Just out of curiosity, what is in your criteria for best guitarist?

    Steve vai, Yngwie or somthing?

  10. Okay so I just read through this thirty so odd page shitstorm and am ready to offer my two cents for whoever cares. I've been viewing this forum since '01 and an actual member for seven years. I've never been particularly outspoken and generally only comment if I have something to say. Hence why I've only got less than 1500 posts in seven years while some members rack that up in three months. Madison has always been a fair moderator. I have not always agreed with her on certain topics, but that is the beauty of a "fan" forum. She has always reported both sides of the story and not censored this forum like HTGTH. People who have been here for along time know that she was the biggest source of information in the early years when there virtually was no news. She had the balls (so to speak) to print Merck's letter when other forums wouldn't. People could freely discuss their opinions of Axl, the new members, etc. without fear of retaliation. If someone did cross the line, such as making personal attacks or "reunion spamming" Madison was always their to crack down. This forum's unbiased approach to GNR is what has kept me here for so long. It is the most informative, unbiased, and actually fun GNR forum on the internet.

Madison has strode the line between sticking up for Axl and not buying into his bullshit for years. She's a huge GNR and Axl fan. The first to come to his defense and also the first to call him out when she thinks he has crossed the line. Her report on "SlashGate" seemed thorough. She reported the facts and her opinion, which I totally agree with. If she was lied to or misled than that is the business of journalism. Happens all the time.

Now for Dexter, or Axl, to come onto a fan forum that is, to the best of my knowledge, in no way officially officiated with the band and make a homophobic, childish, and somewhat threatening rant at Madison is unacceptable behavior. I know, I know. I'm a GNR fan so I have to worship Axl and whatever he says and does. Bullshit. Nobody loves GNR more than me, ask any of my friends. But being a fan does not entail idol worship that borders on cultism. Just because I'm a fan of the music doesn't mean I have to agree with the man behind it. I'm a fan of Roman Polanski as well. Does that mean that I should endorse having sex with thirteen year old girls as well?

I have praised Axl in recent months for trying to connect with the fans via Twitter, his upbeat onstage demeanor, and the way he has treated fans across Asia and Canada. But today's one post wipes all that away. For him to come onto a forum that he does not directly sponsor nor endorse and basically have one of the founding members stripped of her ranks is an egregious broach of the entertainer/fan relationship. Axl, and his entourage, have been preaching their own brand of propaganda for years now. You know the story: it's not his fault, everybody's out to get him, Slash is a cancer, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.

I'm sure in Axl's head all of this is true. But for him to dictate the way that his fans view him and his band is fascist. I do not know of any other band that has done such a thing.

I am, and always will be, a fan of Axl the musician and entertainer. But I will never be a fan of Axl the man.

    Peace.

    - Sonny

    Well said.

  11. I´m a big big JS fan but also Petrucci, Steve Vai and that kind of guitar players...

Would you recomend me any new (young) guitar player with same style (instrumental albums)? I´m not into the new generation of guitar heroes so i´d like if you know someone good you tell me.

Who is considered the best one right now?

    Thanx, Carlos.

    Andy Timmons

  12. I think shes a very inspiring guitarist. Not many male guitarists can get that good and she has killer control on guitar.

The only thing I would say is that she looks really unsure of herself on stage. Also her own material is pretty good but not my cup of tea.

Shes is probably one of the best guitarists in the world.

  13. this thread is just stupid, nothing compares to the old gnr NOTHING, im glad to see axl finally happy and pleased dj ash is good but the rest dont hold a candle to the old gnr AND also they cant play estranged u dumbasses even slash found it difficult to play so the chances of these playing it well is remote at best, but its a big improvement on the 2001-2007 performances for sure

Do you seriously think that this current band, the most technically talented of all GnR history, cant play Estranged?! They can play something as difficult as Better or Shacklers Revenge, but not Estranged which for any guitar player is 50 notches down in terms of difficulty. Okay, Slash is not that good of a guitarist. A good guitar writer sure, but as pure skill Bumble and Bucket are ages ahead Slash.

Thats complete and utter bullshit for a start. The word "Technically" gets thrown about a lot but its just a term people who know fuck all about good guitar playing use when they want to sound clever.

I'm not too sure in what you want to say. Are you saying that all those 8 finger tap sweeps are something Slash can easliy do?

*Sigh* When did an 8 finger tap sweep ever make a song sound better. Wanking off the neck does not make you a better guitarist. When your in a band it doesnt matter how many 8 finger fret sweeps :rofl-lol: you make its about what your playing brings to the song as part of the band. Sometimes less is more my friend.

And yeah i'd say Slash could probably pull off the 8 finger death move if that was what he was interested in doing. But its plainly not.

    +1

The greatest guitarists out there aren't figuring out ways to make guitar playing a technical feista, its more about playing somthing that is right for the song.

Case and point, first and second solo in better. First is an wankfest of guitar licks that don't go anywhere, while the second is simple but still gives me goosebumps.

  14. Awesome interview. Hopefully we hear the The General in South America

Ummm.....Awesome interview??? Look, I love Furtus' stage charisma and personality, but this doesn't translate at all to this interview...I would've loved to have a few answers that were over 5 words...

Yeah I agree. Those shows are cool and all but I really want tougher questions asked (but they'll most likely be brushed off or ignored)

Its not that these questions were too easy or badly delivered, but the responses that got slightly brushed off or ignored. I think it gives the impression of being unproffesional.

Its still good and thoughtful that richard agreed to have an interview at all, kudos for that.

  15. Aerosmith To Hold Auditions For Replacement Singer

Aerosmith has begun its search for a singer to replace Steven Tyler -- though whether it's permanent or temporary is uncertain.

Guitarist Joe Perry told Canada's QMI Agency that the group is "already getting the word out there. The word's been out there for a while." After his Canadian swing with Motley Crue -- which ends Feb. 5 in Montreal -- Perry said that Aerosmith will "start having some auditions, making some phone calls. Hopefully, we'll have found a new singer by the summer, and Aerosmith will be able to go back out on the road."

Aerosmith is essentially a dead band.
