Awhile ago, one of our members made a thread stating that CD had sold 5 million copies and attempted to back it up with an article written by Mike Schuster at Minyanville. In it, Mike says that the album did indeed push 5 million copies but failed to provide a link as to the source of the claim. You can read the article here.
The person who made the thread then took this article to Wikipedia and managed to get the official page updated to reflect this completely unconfirmed sales data. After seeing all of this I decided to ask Mike, the person who wrote the piece, where he got his source from. This is what he wrote back to me in a personal message via facebook.
The article from which I got the statistic is no longer online.If you find a conflicting sales number, let me know and I'll correct the Minyanville article.

So as you can see, there's no evidence of the sort. Not only that, but he's willing to correct the entire article which means he either made it up, or is completely unsure of his original source (I tend to believe the former, not the latter).
