  1. but even all the critics who disliked it - and it was obvious from the trailers it wouldn't be a good movie - universally praised cruise's performance and said it belonged in a better movie. he's only in the movie for about 30 mins but every review i read mentioned that he stole every scene.

Having seen it - it is a thoroughly cheesy film, that is enjoyable for anyone who enjoys either musicals or those sort of "Glee"-esque programmes. It wasn't a "bad" film, but it fulfils all the right cliches and I can see why it would be universally panned, bar for one man.

Tom Cruise's performance is phenomenal - he truly steals it. His performance is immense, and it should've been purely about him. They could've done an entire movie on him, and it would've been a LOT better than Rock of Ages, because he simply lives it and fulfils it. It's very Axl, but perfect of the time. Unlike Cruise in any other role - you WANT to be Stacee Jaxx. His attitude, just everything, so well pulled off.

I'm not saying rush out and see it - because it isn't worth doing that, but if you like musicals and you like your rock n' roll, you'll certainly enjoy it.

Thanks for this, I am really interested in seeing it just for Toms part alone.

  2. Chinese Democracy - 7 Its trying to be the next WTTJ but its not there. Still has a great, catchy, riff and I love Bumblefoot's additions. Axl's voice sounds raw, angry, and powerful. The guitars do sound a bit cheesy though and the song gets somewhat repetitive. I also don't like the long intro.

Shackler's Revenge - 9 The 2nd best song on the album. This is what Chinese Democracy should have been throughout. Its got a gloomy, aggressive tone throughout. Axls voice is spot on and the range is amazing. The solo is fantastic, its different, its mean. This song is just brutal and I love it. Should have been the first single. When I think of the word Chinese Democracy, I think of rebellion, violence etc. This song fits that perfectly.

Better - 6 Very generic sounding song. I do not like the intro at all. Sounds really cheesy and somewhat embarrassing. The chorus is very catchy but my problem is the sound of the guitars. Its sounds really cheesy and fake. The leak had a very powerful and raw guitar sound which I liked. The breakdown vocally is amazing but the whole synth crap ruins it. It should have been heavy with the same tone of guitars as the leak or something similar to the sound of the guitar in the solo in Shacklers.

Street of Dreams - 5 It could have been much better. It should have been. Should have been more grandiose like Estranged or November Rain but its just not there. The chorus is not appealing. The guitars are lovely from the tone to the feel. Its actually everything else seems lacking. The song speaks for itself when it couldn't chart.

If the world - 3 This entire song is awful. Too many synths. The acoustic riff is so catchy and the solo has a lot of emotion. I hate the sounds of the guitar and the synths during the chorus. Nearly everything else is perfect, it just sounds over produced.

There was a time - 10 THE best song on the album hands down. Everything is great, powerful, emotional. The intro is great. Axls vocals are amazing. Really well done song. I have no complaints.

Catcher in the rye - 7 I will never understand why Brian May's part was removed. I get he isn't part of the band but his tone and feel fit the song perfectly. 100%. The chorus is very catchy. Its happy, makes you feel good. Could have been a lot better and is lacking like Street Of Dreams. I do enjoy this song although.

Scraped- 4 This song could have been killer. It could have followed the same path as Shacklers but its ruined by that shitty pop synth all throughout. The riff is killer, it just sounds over produced. Its a shame.

Riad N the Bedouins - 3 Sounds over produced. Very generic riff. Nothing special at all. A filler. The leak had me interested and this version had me disappointed.

Sorry - 7 Great, gloomy, dark, song. If the huge synth like sounding shit was removed from the Chorus, this would be an amazing song. Its different and thats why I like it. Its growing on me. The entire feel of the song is great.

IRS - 5 This song has both its good and bad. The chorus is catchy. It just sounds like its dated. It is, but if you didn't tell me it was around for over a decade I'd still say it sounds dated. More of a filler. A notch above Rhiad.

Madagascar- 2 This entire song is awful, over produced, and is a poor attempt at being a song in the same category as TWAT. The only appealing part was when MLKs voice is being played throughout. That part is scary, powerful, sounds great. Everything else sucks.

This I love - 3 Nothing spectacular. Axls voice is great but thats about it. Lets be honest, this is a poor mans Nov Rain or anything in that category. This was AXL and everyone else. Not appealing at all.

Prostitute- 8 Good song but more of a filler. A few notches below TWAT. The chorus and outro are GREAT. It needs more outside of that though to be on par with TWAT.

    Overall: 5.7/10

  3. This is one of the most interesting threads i've read on here in a long time.

As a GNR fan, I still feel a little upset and annoyed that the 2002 line up (specifically that line up, because I always preferred Fortus to Tobias) just weren't able to last longer than a handful of offbeat shows abroad and a fuckfest of a US tour. They were such a weird and unique group of musicians, and I think what appealed to me about them is how far removed they seemed from what i'd come to associate Guns N Roses with by that point in time. I honestly think they're the reason I still give a fuck about this band.

That team of Buckethead, Robin Finck, Brain & Richard Fortus is such a dream lineup of musicians. I'm glad they worked together while they did, but that many different people wont ever work out for so long.

It's weird to hear Buckethead is still so anti Guns, though. Didn't Axl write about how he felt lied to by Merck over the Rio thing and was open to Buckethead coming back in some way?

Totally agree. That 2002 lineup was killer. So much talent across the board. It's a shame because they could have done big things. That lineup with a 2006ish Axl : mouth-rainbow.jpg

  4. Thanks for anyone who provides legit info to this topic. If what Madcap says is true then screw Tommy Stinson and that hack writer Del James. Seems like Bucket came to the table with legit stuff to contribute even as Guns really wasn't a fave band of his as well as inspiring Axl and he just got treated badly by band members and people in the studio. Who wouldn't be burned by that along with a prolonged release date for the album and an aborted tour. I could see why Axl had the set list as it was for the 01-02 shows as it showed a few CD songs but most importantly showed that the then new band was a force with the songs, mainly Appetitie, that everyone knows and loves. Still I'm sure Bucket would have departed sooner than later as their shows have been pretty much the same. Hope his stuff is on any other released material.

As I've said, my theory on Del and Tommy is completely speculative, based entirely on what other users have told me on various GN'R Web sites, and the fact that Tommy has never done anything but talk shit about Bucket. Everything else though, I'll stand behind 100%.

This information is great, really cool to learn new things especially going back to 01/02. I loved that lineup.

  5. While these questions are interesting, it's impossible to predict what would've happened if he'd stayed. The fact that he was replaced so early on goes to show he had no place in the band. Correct me if I'm wrong though

But didn't Tracii say that he had a part in the writing of AFD? I don't have any links to back that up though.

I'd like to see the setlist of an L.A. Guns show when Axl was their singer or one of a GN'R show back when they had Tracii.

I wouldn't call Phil Lewis a "hack," he's got some good pipes and is charismatic. L.A. Guns are a pretty good band. The Tracii-led version has yet to release a new album though, and while the Lewis one just put one out.

He was not credited with writing any of the songs but he was with the band when they wrote 'Anything Goes'. Thats the only AFD song he is linked to.

  6. Didn't Mark Canter say at some point that Izzy came bakc briefly in 1996 and the early UYI lineup jammes a bit before things completely fell to pieces.

This is correct. Izzy came back and the UYI lineup was present for a few weeks in 1996. Izzy then left again. I don't know where Paul was at this point my guess is not in the band but close to Axl.

Also Zakk Wylde was in the band for a couple of weeks. He never inked the contract but he was brought in to record a few songs. Those songs never surfaced except one that appeared on a Black Label Society album.

    Here we are

    http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/12/12/a-glimpse-of-the-guns-n-roses-that-almost-was-zakk-wylde-jams-with-axl-rose/

I believe after this izzy was brought in the izzy left and Paul joined

I also recall an interview in which Axl mentioned gnr had a unknown guitarist that joined. It was either axl or Matt and they never said but I'm fairly certain that was Izzy

  7. "If you don't enjoy other people opinions on Slash go to a Slash message board. You could then have fantastic discussions with the other 3 or 4 members on there on how he's the greatest ever without ever having to read someone elses comments who may not think the same way you do. You could even arrange to go watch him play at some of the bars and pubs he struggling to sell out these days with your fellow forumites whilst you bash Axl to death.

Slash is irrelevant to modern day GnR, deal with it!"

slash has 3 or 4 fans? added to the crazy fucking loon list.

dude who wrote the classics? the ones your heros are covering night after night? lol

Mostly Axl and Izzy. Slash didn't write much at all.

    LOL

    What's funny about that fact?

excuse me i wasnt aware that axl rose wrote the guitar riffs to all the classic songs  fucking loons

Axl and Izzy wrote the majority of GN'R songs. It's not debatable; look it up.

Maybe the Illusion albums but definitely not A4D. Even though the entire band is credited to writing AFD and rightfully so, a lot of the big time riffs for the big 3 came from the man himself

welcome to the jungle - slash/axl

    it's so easy - duff/west arkeen

    nightrain - slash/izzy/duff/axl

out ta get me - izzy/slash/axl

mr. brownstone - izzy (i think izzy wrote all of this song but i might be wrong)

    paradise city - duff/slash/axl

    my michelle - izzy/axl

    think about you - izzy

    sweet child o mine - izzy/slash/axl

    you're crazy - izzy/slash/axl

    anything goes - izzy/axl/chris weber

rocket queen - axl/slash/izzy/duff? (not too sure about this one)

  8. I think after the tour of 2010 Axl probably was thinking that his voice was the best its been in years so maybe between the 2010 tour and Rock In Rio 2011 He spent alot of time in the studio recording vocals to the point he started to sound like Mickey Again?

    Anyone ever think this?

Gained weight, out of shape, lack of dedication etc. he was a mess at RIR (I know beating a dead horse. . .)

that being said so far in 2012 he sounds very good. Maybe not like '10 or '06 but still damn good. A little mickey here and there but I can live with that .

  9. Ouch, what a comeback!

I'll go cry myself to sleep now. :(

Wait your turn, I am sure Slash is crying in bed right now over your amazing comment.

No. I think he will just write another book of lies about it.

You have proof that they are lies, huh? Oh, are you just repeating the weak comeback that your idol made without evidence to support it?

Do you have an opinion of your own? If so, just what do you have to prove they are lies?

    Factual errors:

    - Page 1: "I was born on July 23, 1965 in Stoke On Trent, England"

    - He was born in Hampstead, England but spent his childhood in Stoke-on-Trent.

    - Page 102: "We could have booked a gig locally because, collectively, we all knew the right people, but no, we decided that after three rehearsals, we were ready for a tour."

    - The first show the Appetite For Destruction line-up played was on June 6th, 1985 at the Troubadour in Hollywood, CA. The tour up to Seattle happened after that show.

    - Page 164: "Del ended up writing treatments for some of our videos, as well as having written the short story that inspired Axl to write "November Rain"."

    - Del wrote Without You which inspired the video to November Rain and at least part of Estranged.

    - Page 210: "When we got on set, we met JJ Jackson, the host, and he was really cool. "

    - J.J. Jackson didn't interview GN'R on Headbanger's Ball in 1987. [Thanks Nevy]

    - Page 221, 305: "Within a day, we hooked up with Fred Curry, the drummer for Cinderella, and he was great in a pinch."

    - Fred Coury is the drummer's name. [Thanks Nevy]

    - Page 323: "We had three theater dates in L.A., San Francisco, and New York, with various bands opening for us, such as Blind Melon and Faith No More and Raging Slab."

    - Raging Slab opened for GN'R at the NYC show, Dumpster opened in San Francisco and L.A. Shannon Hoon (of Blind Melon) sang with the band at the L.A. show.

    - Page 323: ".. including two nights at the Inglewood Forum in L.A."

    - It was actually four nights.

    - Page 335: "After we got out stage show together, backup singers, horn section, and all, and we did a week's worth of rehearsals with every element intact, suddenly we found ourselves in South America, before a crowd of 180,000 at Rock In Rio II, on January 20, 1991."

    - The extended lineup played its first show on December 5th, 1991 (the second US leg) in Worcester, MA.

    - Page 339: "When he jumped down, it was great, we kept playing that suspenseful riff that starts off "Rocket Queen," and I thought the whole moment was killer. When Axl got back onstage, everything felt triumphant for a second... then he grabbed the mike, said something like, "Because of the bullshit security, we're going home," slammed the mike down, and walked offstage.

The band kept going. We'd gotten good at improvising to fill dead space - drum solos, guitar solos jams - we had a bag of tricks to keep things moving whenever Axl made a sudden exit. We kept jamming, and I went over to the side of the stage.

"Where is he? I asked Doug.

He looked at me with a pained expression. "He's not coming back."

"What do you mean he's not coming back?" I shouted, still playing the riff.

"There is no way he is coming back," Doug said. "There is nothing I can do."

We were about ninety minutes into our set, which was our minimum contractually, but the plan was to play a two-hour ser and the crowd wasn't close to satisfied. They knew there was a lot more left. I would have done anything to get Axl back onstage at that point.

"Ask him again!" I yelled. "Find out if he's really not going to." I should have known by Doug's expression that there was no use.

Once it was final, we had no choice: the band put down our gear, and it was like pulling the plug on the stereo - the song just ended on a question mark. That entire arena sat there expecting something to happen, but instead we walked offstage without a word."

    - The following is what happened and it can be seen in the pro-shot bootleg footage from the show. About 1:15 into the song, Axl asks security "Hey, take that! Take that now! Get that guy and take that........ I'll take it Goddamn it!" He jumps into the crowd while the band keeps playing the riff Slash mentioned. Axl returns to the stage at around 1:57 into the song, motions for the band to stop playing and says "Well, thanks to the lame ass security, I'm going home.". Then he throws down his microphone, walks past Slash and walks offstage. Slash proceeds to say something into the microphone. His last line is "We're out of here".

Page 350: "In May of 1992. We announced that we would coheadline a summer tour with Metallica starting July 7"

    - The tour started on July 17th, 1992 at the RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.

    - Page 363: "I got married to Renee in October 1991."

    - 1992

    - Page 412: "On the morning of 9/11, we were woken up at 8:15 by David Williams, Michael's house guitar player .... ... I saw that a plane had hit the Twin Towers, and moments later the second one hit while I was actually watching."

    - Flight 11 crashed into the north face of the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46:40. Flight 175 crashes into the south face of the South Tower at 9:03:11.

    - Page 437: ".... and the Pistols' "Pretty Vacant."

    - They played "Bodies" by Sex Pistols at their first show as well as playing it on tour.

    - Several pages: Slash's current band mate in VR, Dave Kushner, is referred to as Dave Kirscher in several places in the book.

    stupidest thing i've ever read

theres a difference between being inconsistent and lying

Can you recall events in your life going back 10 or 20 years on the dot? I doubt it

  10. Given Axl's age, my bet is, this is the last tour ever, however much longer it lasts for.

    :sleeper:

Come on, get real. Axl is 50, that's hardly old enough to consider retirement. Ronnie James Dio was 67 on the last Heaven And Hell tour, and he could have gone much longer had it not been for the cancer. Everyone in Iron Maiden is at least 54, and they're at the top of their game. Alice Cooper is 63. 50 is not that old.

And none of them are relevant today

the last thing I want to see GN'R become is a band known for its past accomplishments but unfortunately some will agree that is already happening. I think ChiDem made them somewhat relevant today but I dont want to see Axl go down the same road as Iron Maiden or whomever. I'd rather see GN'R as a relevant band.

  11. Shacklers is very appealing to my friends who are casual rock fans and probably because of Rockband. Other than that they are indifferent. To be honest I haven't had anyone praise the album personally. Most view it as 'meh' as do I. I like far more songs though but I understand when everyone tells me Madagascar or riad sucks. I agree. I definitely think there are some great tracks like TWAT and lately Sorry.
