  1. Shackler's Revenge too Bacardi. Just from my perspective, a lot of people think Shackler's Revenge and TWAT are the two best songs on CD(obv. can be argued) and Bucket was a huge reason why. Not to mention that there is likely a bunch of Bucket material we haven't heard yet. Bucket had the perfect blend of songwriting and technical skill.

You have to look past what was done and also take into account what could have become. Robin was also very important. That was a great tandem. It's unfortunate because I really thought the early 00's(fortus or Paul) lineup could have done big things. Still holding out on the current lineup as we haven't heard anything but I haven't really been wowed by anything. RIR was a great example of how powerful that early '00s lineup was.

  2. Buckethead was never as important to the band as some might have you believe.

He came in after most of the songs had already been written. His songwriting contributions are nothing more than him having brought in one or two songs (Shackler's, Scraped) and letting Axl do his thing with them. To me it seems like Bucket's tenure in the band consisted of a few weeks of soloing over already finished songs and doing a tour. Naturally, given his talent, the solos he laid down are great for the most part, but he had hardly any involvement in the creation of the album and the composition of the songs. He was nothing more than a session musician in GNR.

He was probably less important than Paul but more than Robin.
Robin was around in the composition stages and has songwriting credits (ASCAP) on about 8 songs, not to mention he actually plays on every song while Bucket is absent on a couple.

Is there a place where we can see these songwriting credits? I've always wondered about this.

IIRC the credits in the CD booklet are are mostly from Paul's memory. ASCAP credits are very different.

  3. i like him too! he's not afraid to have a sense of humor. i think he gives the most honest answers of anyone in the current line up in interviews. i think he's a geek at heart, and probably has a lot of empathy for the obsessive online fan communities. shredding isn't something i'm so into, but i think he's a big step up from buckethead, in terms of being a gnr member. i think all the current guys are big steps up over their chinese democracy counterparts.

I know what you mean. I absolutely love the music that the 2001-02 line-up brought us but the look wasn't "GNR". Fast forward to 2006 and it all seemed to get back in the right direction.

Sounds so much better like this. No shitty synths or cheesy guitar sounds. The chorus sounds amazing there.
