I don't really understand this narrative that it would be tone deaf to release it as a vinyl exclusive track. It's not some new concept for physical releases to have exclusive tracks whether it's a B-sdie, an LP bonus track, or a bonus track on a Japanese release. This stuff used to happen all the time, and plenty of bands still do it that way. I don't think it's really fair to say that it's harsh for the band to not make this mythological song readily available to everybody - we are the ones that built up this myth after all for a song that's only been mentioned in an official context a handful of times over 20 years.

On the contrary, I kind of like that GN'R are doing this the old school way if it's true it won't be availably digitally. I love opening a new record and being able to dig into a bonus track that I know I can't hear otherwise.

You’re not wrong in that it’s certainly nothing new to throw exclusive tracks on physical copies. I think the annoyance comes from the idea that, while you and I might love our vinyl and see it as special, the vast majority of fans in 2023 consume their music digitally and they’d be left scrambling for ripped YouTube videos that would likely be pulled off quickly anyway.

I wonder if it has something to do with licensing issues, if it is indeed even true. I personally don't mind there being an "exclusive" song but we all know it's gonna be all over the internet once the vinyl is shipped.

It’s just utterly obnoxious that they’d not release such an anticipated track on the medium(s) that the vast majority of fans in 2023 consume music. I just can’t think that they’d be that tone deaf to do that.

  3. If there’s really only two tracks left “in the can” after The General, one will almost certainly be Atlas. The big question is what will that 6th track be. You’d hope they picked it based on whether Slash and Duff could/have elevated it with their sound(s). I’m hoping it’s Oklahoma/Berlin, but certainly wouldn’t be disappointed if it’s Soul Monster.

I’m going to take a forum sabbatical after everyone has heard The General. I was pretty bummed reading some of the negative feedback on Absurd, HS and Perhaps

I’m so easy to please I’m very confident I’m going to dig it.

Oh same here. I’ll wait a good bit before checking in to see all the usual suspects blather on about whatever minute issues they have with the mix that completely ruins the song for them.

It's the mystery around it and how long it took.

BlackBerry Smoke is releasing a new album and I'm like "ok, nice, I'll check it out when it becomes available" and that's it. BUT usually they do release some great songs which I enjoy, sometimes even more than with GNR.

But just imagine the sheer time I've been reading about The General. I joined this forum in 2007 (!) and before that I was already lurking on HTGTH.

    It's crazy.

After all this time I just want to hear the truth, quite literally. We've all been reading about the vault. The General is part of that mystique.

    It better not suck :shrugs:

I remember vividly talking about it when it was first mentioned to a buddy of mine my senior year of high school circa 2003 after it was first mentioned by Marco Beltrami. I turn 38 in November. Life is funny!

The final cover is much better!

So much! Was worried it’d be some variation of the tongue again, which though an invaluable marketing tool has been leaned into a bit too much in recent years.

The new tune is great, and LOVE that it has a Keef solo.

It will be ripped and widely available for free online the moment the vinyls ship, so not releasing it digitally or on streaming means they're forgoing additional money and good publicity for no reason. It would make no sense.

In other words, it seems there's a decent chance this rumor is true

Exactly. I’m not sure I put much stock in it not being the case on the grounds of it “not making sense” considering the operation in question.

Apparently we won't be getting the Song on streaming devices. (they were also the ones who knew about perhaps being pushed back a week)
