    Yes!

Most of the audience would probably be indifferent to new material. I saw that at the Eagles show for Long Road out of Eden. Soul crushing.

That's the world we live in now... and what I meant by "there's a lack of incentives (not just financial, but recognition and/or audience reception) for new music."

Popular music is now unfortunately restricted in its promotion capacity (with the former mediums that bonded the listening audience... the CD/record, radio, MTV, etc.) shadows of what they once were... so unfortunately for many legendary bands of the past, Guns N' Roses included, new music probably won't reach that great of an audience past the die-hard fans... in result, new music will have to cross hurdles in its creation given factors including a lukewarm response at live shows in front of those largely there for the nostalgia.

This is not a Guns N' Roses problem, but rather a problem across music now under a system that incentives tours on past glories and de-incentives new material for established artists. Not saying that this precludes new music from being created, just that it adds a hurdle probably.

I feel really worried about the future of gnr... I personally think that axl doesn't want to write new music. Just sing other people' s songs..

Will slash and dufff accept this in GNR?

I get this feeling also when it comes to his earnest passion to write new music at this stage in his career... due to some combination of lack of incentives to write (both financial and recognition-wise), inability to self-motivate when he has full command of the show, contentment/complacency in the current touring circumstance, frustrations that he probably experiences due to his hyper-detailed and indecisive persona when we works on new material, and disinterest/inability to collaborate and/or connect with bandmates on a level-playing-field basis to complete new work.

In later Guns, we saw more and more cover songs (basically ever since UYI) as Axl's dominance grew (which is strange because he is such a genius when it comes to songwriting but appears to need certain circumstances to be in place...), and more touring absent a new full-length album to promote.

    Read this:http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/nme-exclusive-acdc-and-axl-rose-interviewed

So what happens after these shows – does the band continue in this format? Do you get another singer? Does Brian come back?
Axl: “Whatever they’re doing with Brian, that’s not my place to talk, that’s their business. Anybody else, I will slowly poison them!”

What’s his prognosis – is he able to rejoin in the future?
Angus: “He has to be very careful of what hearing he’s got left. This is what he told us - he was gutted about not finishing [the tour] because he says he would have loved to have gotten through. It was his call, what he wanted. He made that decision himself. He didn’t want to be deaf. And I perfectly understand that – when you stop doing this, you want to walk away with all your pieces! I don’t even want to leave without my fingernail!”

Did you speak to Brian at all for advice before joining the band?
Axl: “No, I have not spoken with Brian, only because we haven’t spoken much about Brian. There hasn’t been any negative talk with the guys or anything, it’s just the time schedule of having to get things together for the shows, while also I had Guns N’ Roses commitments and then breaking the foot. The day I found out it was broken I left the hospital to rehearse. My only day off was the surgery day and the next day was back to rehearsals.”

Is it true you auditioned a singer from an AC/DC tribute band to front the group for these dates?
Angus: “A lot of people were putting people forward. You know, you’ve got to be fair, you’ve got to listen to anyone who said something, you listen to them. You’ve got to do the right thing.”

What’s the latest with Phil [Rudd, former drummer who was arrested for threatening to kill a former employee last year]?
Angus: “Phil I haven’t heard from. He’s been very quiet of late.”
Axl: “I’ve talked to him about these other singers, though!”

Nothing there that tells me Axl is anything more than a guest singer for now... i.e. that he has not displaced Brian from the studio process

All I know for sure is that if Guns N' Roses doesn't release new music after the 'Not In This Lifetime' tour is over, there is no way in the world we will see them playing ever again. They just cannot get away with another tour emptied of new music in the next years. It's impossible.

So Axl will have to think what he wants to do, seriously. If ACDC offer him a record deal, he should go for it. That's the only way he will put out new music quickly (sort of when he showed up in Baz album).

I was under the impression the lead singer situation in AC/DC is still in no man's land... and that Axl is nothing more than a guest singer for the rest of the tour (and potentially for future tours), with Brian Johnson still the technical lead singer of the band, and main collaborator relating to at least any "studio recordings" (see link).

    http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/655251/Axl-Rose-ACDC-lead-singer-Guns-N-Roses-Brian-Johnson-deaf-cancel-tour

From what source do we derive information that Axl is anything more than a guest singer (i.e. that there's a real interest on AC/DC's part for studio collaboration together)?

Given that the doctor's order to Brian relates only to stopping live performances, I'd think it'll take quite a lot (at least immediately) to convince Angus and co. to remove Brian, a bandmate and friend for decades, from the studio process if he appears eager to continue with AC/DC in that respect.

I think this thread jumped the gun a bit. Give the guy a break. Axl has a hectic schedule ahead of him this year. Lets see what happens during the tour and when it's done. Right now, they don't need a new song nor album.

Jumped the gun? Sorry, but I disagree. I agree that jumping on him and the band since the announcement of the reunion is rushing, but there isn't an ounce of jumping the gun when I consider his record during the last two and a half DECADES.

I wouldn't be taken aback if they released one or two new songs along with a new greatest hits collection, or a new live album, or something of that nature. But I'm still having a rather hard time imagining Axl and this band coming together in the studio, or even separately, to produce a new album of material soon. Once more, very happy if I'm wrong.

I wish someone would have the balls to interview Axl and ask him that question: what does prevent you from releasing new music?

Sure nowadays releasing albums is not a good monetary deal but aren't these people ARTISTS first? Guns N' Roses is safe with the old material, that will always continue selling for the end of times, so what hurts to release music now?

I can't understand that part of not putting an artistic product out if you're an artist. It makes no sense to me. Specially when you have nothing else to prove.

Good post. Well... money, and other incentives like fame, attention, plaudits, etc... speak loudly unfortunately... for everyone, you and I included... but perhaps for some people more than others.

Axl's not alone in potentially being influenced by declining incentives to release new material (for established artists)... many established artists go out on world tours / reunion tours, and bypass the step of releasing new material first nowadays (which might appear a great deal of work for not much reward)... if they are able to draw the crowds worldwide absent it that is.

In the case of Axl and G'n'R... his/their lack of musical output started ahead of the internet age / decline of the music industry / music sales (so obviously his personality and other factors played/play a role)... however, even if the lack of money in writing new material is not the only factor in his decisions, that doesn't mean that that doesn't influence them nowadays.

  7. While the "reunion" tour is underway, and obviously that's incredible and unexpected news...

A topic on a related but not so optimistic note...

Is the current incarnation of Axl Rose one of the most unproductive popular musicians in modern music's history? While it's impossible to know/confirm the vaults of completed or half-completed music we've heard about over the years, the fact is that he and his band have only produced one album of new material since 1991... and even Chinese Democracy is now almost a decade old.

Instead of new music, Axl seems content to take the easy road / money road by touring on old material... and to create a mirage of newness... by reinserting treasured material from UYI and other albums back into the set every now and then... to probably both keep the band content that they're not playing the same material... and keep the diehard fans content / half-content. And, he's now again touring on past material with AC/DC absent any interest it appears to contribute to any new material with AC/DC obviously, with the writing process it appears still most likely to be under the guidance of Brian Johnson.

So my question is... is this just how Axl is now, and G'n'R by default? Is it because new music doesn't make money anymore (i.e. the death of the record/CD, etc.), and G'n'R is more than capable of earning massive sums still on touring on old material alone (occasionally with a new live DVD or greatest hits album to promote these tours)? Is it because of Axl's incapacity to make decisions / his extreme attention to detail... which delays any decisions for years and decades while he contemplates and micro-manages? Or is it partly just because he's lazy compared to when he was hungry in his youth and past caring too much about new material / disinterested in too much work, particularly with people he doesn't want to be in the studio with and studio execs he doesn't want to deal with?

Not sure what everyone thinks. And/or if we'll see a new album of new material anytime soon... Here's to hoping, and obviously I'd love to be surprised.

    Exactly.

I wouldn't understate the importance of creating true hype. At the moment, the legacy Guns community and second-order fans in the rock community are buying tickets.

But this is short of a phenomenon and will not sell out stadiums; those who know little about Guns or for that matter classic rock music are in many cases not even aware there's a reunion underway.

Axl made one big mistake with the shameful promotion behind the Chinese Democracy album: an album he had worked more than a decade on; and he/those others with any leverage should not make the same mistake again. That means promotion in the popular media, new album, etc. Though given the speed at which Axl is able to make any significant decisions, that may be hoping for too much.

  9. Have we even confirmed that Melissa is a member of the band? Or is she a touring member like a Teddy Zig Zag per say in the old days?

To those who say that it is sexist to claim that Melissa should not be a member of the band, I would disagree... and in fact think that's overly simplistic. Not everything is about sexism, racism, exclusion, etc. Sometimes the reason for diversity is just about maintaining the identity that the organisation carries with its relevant audiences/clients. We should celebrate diversity in the world, and let institutions stand for what they are. If a band is founded as a mixed boy/girl group, and that's what it stands for, then obviously it's not a problem when a new male or female member joins. But, we would not want a boy to join a girl group, and similarly unfortunately, in Melissa's example, it happens to be the case that to most, G'n'R is a revered male, hard rock band from the 1980s and 90s with a mean streak for violent/unpredictable behaviour and this identity is not something these fans would let transform easily, and I think rightfully so. Music groups do go through changes constantly, but when the change occurs suddenly and at the very root of what the band stands for... that's when some will have reservations. I, for one, actually really enjoyed seeing Melissa on stage and thought her stage presence was quite good from the clips we've seen, and think her chemistry with the group will only improve. However, I'd naturally still prefer her to be a touring member rather than a member of the band... I suppose we'll find out which is the case soon.

  11. the interview years ago with Beta is better

    I agree.

This Metal Show interview sucked. It was nothing but ass kissing. BORING.

Bumblefoot is one weird dude. It made me cringe listening to him speak.

    Agree.

VERY conservative interview--- the TMS group could have done much more content-wise. And even on the questions they did ask, Axl's responses seemed awkward and sometimes angry. He clearly talked around many answers, spoke half-truths at times, and continues to put blame elsewhere.

Not sure I would be too interested in another Axl interview after watching that.

The way the interview did not involve Ashba, who seems a genuine person, was also worthy of criticism.

  12. Bach is the perfect friend for Axl- the ideal yes-man...

god knows Axl can't handle any situation/person that he doesn't have complete control over... it's why he's been hiding from the world the last 15 years isn't it knowing that he doesn't control the situation in boundaries outside his home (or on stage)

  13. Would be so amazing if they could just play us something, anything, new. There's really no point in speculating about song titles because we haven't heard any of 'em. Axl knows what songs are ready and/or what he feels like performing and would fit the current show. I'll leave it up to him to choose.

If the band can't figure out the sequencing for a new album or feel it's going to be a while for whatever reasons, why not release a single? So happy to see them on tour under any circumstances but I will never understand why they don't release new music. This band as currently constructed is so great, it is a mystery why they won't do this. A monster GNR single would have resulted in so much publicity and probably doubled ticket sales for this tour. This is not and should not be a nostalgia act, the band is too damn good. It makes me sad that they don't just say fuck all the bullshit, let's just put something new out there.

As for older stuff, Estranged was always at the top of my list so at least we have that. They are playing it, and have knocked it out of the park both times. Next up I'd have to go with Breakdown. LOVE that song. Civil War would be awesome of course. And for some reason, I just picture them strolling back out after Nightrain and the encore, and kicking in to Yesterdays, to a raucous standing ovation.

though the Chinese Democracy tour has been on-going in some form for the best part of 10 years now... remember that this Latin America / US tour is only the last leg to that CD tour and thus... I wouldn't think we'd hear much new yet from the next album

  14. DJ Ashba: "My plan is to release the best GNR album ever. I know we can do it"

    When? 2021?

That is funny. How did u ever come up with that?

And username has been at the forum for years. I've never heard anybody say that he and maddy were the same person.

is Madison still around? i remember her posting frequently in the old days.

She upset axl so after he called her, who according to almost everyone here was a huge fan, a bunch of petty names was banned

what!? banned by Axl? when and what exactly did she say?

  15. You know what would also be funny? For someone in the front row to have this standing next to them. Remember to act reeeeeal nonchalant about it. Just let the dolphin enjoy the show.

    dolphin.jpg

Also, the entire front show should dress up as dolphins for the Greenville Halloween show.

    http://www.google.co.uk/#q=dolphin+costume&hl=en&tbm=shop&ei=LkaTTtjsN9Gt8QOQrqAJ&sa=N&num=20&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=a9c1cd2556f7247b&biw=1228&bih=800

this is the audience of what was once the most DANGEROUS band in the world!!?? :rofl-lol:

  16. I've been thinking about this lately, When most bands tour many of the fans want them to play their classics. But it seems like with *most* gnr fans we all want at least 1 new song. Whereas most people seeing other bands could care less if they even heard about a new album, let alone hearing new music.

And another point (completely off topic) but I've seen alot of people saying things about "hopefully ashba can give axl that extra boost to help him get a new album out" If anyone can do it, it is ashba. I know this is going to sound EXTREMELY petty, but with ashba being from Monticello,Indiana (about 30-40mins away from Lafayette,Indiana) I think Axl feels a real connection to him, it has been said in the past that Axl would show favoritism towards people from Indiana, especially those from around Lafayette. Where maybe he has worked with more talented people, I think people really discount the "back home" attitude, no so much towards lafayette, but artists who come from the area.

yes... creates quite a disincentive for any established bands to write new music nowadays, doesn't it? No money from selling new music, and no audiences that want to hear the new music... ok, just tour on the old stuff again then.

i will never get over how we all justify what's happened to the music scene... and how obvious it is to me how the collapse of the music industry has profoundly damaged the creation of new music.

  17. I've never agreed with that philosophy.

First, were not talking every year. Axl has put out one album in 15 years. That is ludicrous.

Second, it is rock and roll. I guarantee you Axl and this band can write and record 14 songs every year...heck, 14 songs every two years and the music won't be "shitty." If big name musicians can't write 5-6 songs a year......that's just sad.

Axl can write and record 15 songs every two years and they won't be shitty albums.

yeah agreed, but Axl wants everything perfect, what I've heard Axl plays and sings something on piano and Dj is like Whoa! and Axl is like Nah.... There Isn't a single Guns N' Roses song I don't like, and I can't say that about any other band! might be 'cause he wants everything perfect...

and okay, 1 album in 15 years is not enough, but Axl has gone trough alot of shit those years....

Ok, fine- Axl is a perfectionist and he's been through a lot (most of which he brought on himself), noone questions that... but in the 15 year wait- there was definitely also just general lack of motivation involved in great spells...
