i'm an american

I tend to think it's a NY thing...but as I've said, none of my family, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, co-workers, etc..if born here, has ever said they were American.

So much so, that people will fly the flag of their ancestry instead of an American flag

It's the way it's done here. I've never heard anyone say "I'm American". It's Italian, Irish, German, Polish, Puerto Rican, etc.

I should clarify when I said "here", I didn't mean the whole US. From my experience, everyone I've ever known that was born here (yes everyone, no exceptions!) has never said "I'm American when asked "what their nationality is".

It does get weird when there's multiple nationalities involved. They have it down to a science..."I'm 5 percent Irish, 3 percent English, 10 percent German....."

Learn the difference between nationality and ethnicity.
