  1. I saw this one earlier and was going to post it then I realized they couldn't even find a less than 4 and a half year old picture of Axl and their stupid site was filled with spam ads and looked like something no one in their right mind would take seriously anyway.

Not to mention it's lacking the most important content-the goddamn MUSIC. I mean, why would a legit article want to discuss MUSIC when you can discuss Axl's braids and weight?

Axl comes up Roses at Target Center

MUSIC REVIEW: GNR's erratic frontman took the stage at 11:45 p.m., but at least he showed up. Or did he?

    Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune

    Last update: December 03, 2006 – 7:10 PM

All the doubts that Axl Rose would show up for his Target Center concert with Guns N' Roses were finally answered about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, when the blaring guitar intro of "Welcome to the Jungle" filled the Minneapolis arena and 9,100 fading fans awakened.

Alas, Axl never made the nearly 2½-hour gig. The guy who did emerge on stage to scream, "Do you know where you [expletive] are?" sounded like Rose. He even looked like him, although, thanks to Axl's reclusiveness, no one really knows his look nowadays besides cornrows and pale skin.

But this fill-in guy -- let's call him Rose's Bud -- was too congenial and way too professional to be the ne'er-do-well Axl we've all come to know. He seemed happy to be back, and he looked to be in better shape than Rose did in 2002 at Target Center, when his 12-years-in-the-making "Chinese Democracy" album was supposedly almost done (it's still not out).

Rose's Bud even generously shared stage time with his bandmates. We all know that the real Axl -- who long ago split with GNR's original players -- would never do that.

The faux Rose did a pretty good job acting like the real one early on. Wearing a half-unbuttoned, vinyl-like black shirt and beat-up jeans, he dropped a few extra F-bombs into "It's So Easy." In "Mr. Brownstone," he threw his mike stand hard against the stage.

Rose's Bud also wasted no time flashing Axl's enormous ego of old, performing his versions of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" and Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" as if they were so definitive, he couldn't pass them up.

After a spot-on remake of "Sweet Child o' Mine," though, things got weird. Part-time Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck played the first of three lengthy axe solos -- one for every guitarist in the band. Rose's Bud even let keyboardist Dizzy Reed get a few minutes alone in the spotlight. As if the real Axl would ever let anybody tarnish the baby-grandiosity of "November Rain" by letting them play a piano solo.

Without oddball axe-man Buckethead, whom Rose fired after the 2002 tour, the new GNR looked more workman-like and punkish. Its style reflected its feisty and frill-less approach to classics such as "My Michelle" (sung with opener Sebastian Bach) and the setlist surprise "Down on the Farm."

With Minneapolis native Tommy Stinson still playing the bass spread-eagle style, the band made a solid case for the unreleased songs -- you can't really call them "new" anymore -- especially the stormy and frayed rocker "Better" and the freakish encore opener "Chinese Democracy." Best of all, those songs were where Rose's Bud really pushed himself vocally, almost as much as the real Axl did back in 1991.

So where was Rose on Saturday? He might have been sidelined by that ear/throat problem that canceled the Milwaukee show Wednesday. Or else maybe he got stuck at Best Buy headquarters in Richfield explaining why the most-anticipated rock album of the '90s (most folks stopped caring around 1998) still didn't make it to shelves for Christmas, as Rose's people promised.

Hopefully, when "Chinese Democracy" finally does come out, Axl will bring along his friend for the tour.

Paradise City at the Target Center (?)

Perhaps it's time for Axl Rose to update some of his lyrics. Because in order to be a Guns N' Roses fan in 2006, it takes more than a little patience.

When the latest lineup of the '80s rockers took the Target Center’s stage at 11:45 p.m. Saturday night, the faithful general-admission ticketholders had already been on their feet for a good five hours. During that time, the audience of about 9,100 endured four opening acts, two of which were of interest to almost no one. Throw in travel time and navigation of a typically crowded downtown Minneapolis on a frigid weekend night and you're approaching the double digits in terms of hours expended to share 140 minutes in the presence of Mr. Rose.

Was it worth it? Yes and no.

This was a concert designed for drunk people, which meant everything was big and bludgeoning, with three guitarists, fire, pyro and a complete lack of anything approaching subtlety. The show also allowed plenty of time for each of those guitarists to launch into lengthy, indulgent solos -- just perfect for those looking for a bathroom break and another beer.

But in his push to party like it was still 1989, Rose seemed to have forgotten that a significant portion of his dwindling audience consists of grownups with jobs and/or children -- or possibly wardens who need convincing to grant that weekend furlough. And a fair amount of those people don't have the stamina it takes to make it through such a marathon. For proof, I needed only to look to the woman sitting next to me who, midway through GNR's performance, slumped into her seat, plugged her ears and fell asleep. (As it turns out, Rose already had a plan in place to deal with such sleepyheads. Midway through "Out Ta Get Me," a single and utterly incongruous explosion from the stage seemed to serve solely as a wakeup call.)

And that pre-Guns lineup was baffling considering the crowd, with one totally unknown act (Modern Day Zero) and another (Helmet) that has one song that might've been vaguely familiar to those paying attention to major-label alt-rock in the early '90s. Both should have been jettisoned, as the goth strippers of the Suicide Girls and hair-metal survivor Sebastian Bach provided ample amounts of stage warming on their own.

Back to GNR. The band, of which Axl is the only original remaining member, played pretty much the same setlist they did the last time they were in town back in 2002. That meant almost all of the band's undisputable classic "Appetite for Destruction" alongside a handful of later hits and a few of the new tracks that will appear on "Chinese Democracy," an album that’s been promised for at least a decade, but has yet to be released. The only significant changes in four years' time arrived in two additional fresh cuts, "I.R.S." and "Better," alongside fan favorites "Down on the Farm" and "Used to Love Her."

Rose's sketchy vocals -- coupled with the aforementioned overkill of three guitarists -- made for a touch-and-go evening. When he was on, Rose's yips and yowls were transcendent. But far too often, his delivery felt clipped and strained. Maybe it was lingering after-effects from the ear/throat issues that caused Rose to cancel a Milwaukee gig last week. Then again, perhaps it was sheer exhaustion. The Target Center performance was actually the band's second of the day -- the particularly lucky residents of Ames, Iowa, had to wait until a half hour past midnight on Friday for GNR to play for them.

The notoriously prickly Rose said little to the audience, beyond a wee bit of cracking wise about the frigid Minnesota temperature. He did also acknowledge Minneapolis as the hometown of Tommy Stinson, the former Replacements bassist who has been with GNR for eight years now. Indeed, of all the recent recruits, Stinson was the only one with whom Rose showed any real obvious chemistry or affection.

As expected, the GNR standards, from "Welcome to the Jungle" to "Paradise City," gleaned the lustiest response. The newer stuff, though, didn’t go over nearly as well, even though bootlegged versions of songs like "Madagascar" and "The Blues" have been widely available online since 2001.

Maybe Rose needs to think about the fact that it's only the hardcore followers bothering to seek that stuff out. The rest of his audience, including that snoozing woman next to me, might better appreciate the new songs if they had the chance to legally purchase "Chinese Democracy." If, four years from now, GNR rolls back into town with the same story, one can’t help but wonder if anyone will have any patience left at all.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: As I was quite literally falling asleep in the wee hours of the morning while finishing this review, I went in and made some minor edits that fixed a few odd sentences (and probably added a few new odd sentences in the process) and expanded on a few points a little bit more. A version similar to the one that's now up here will appear in Monday's Pioneer Press print edition.

I've also included the setlist below. And feel free to continue posting your thoughts on the show in the comments section.

    Or have your Mom call.

They really do suck, people on every board have been having issues with them and I hope GNR just sticks with Ticketmaster in the future-

  4. So she is okay with him going to a concert where the lead singer sings about drug abuse, fighting with the law, etc, but she is not okay with nudity?

Okay, now this is not a flame but a question. Why is it America is so uptight with nudity, but violence is okay? Now, this isn't meant to spark a pro/anti gun debate or anything political. Just wondering. It just seems to me you are more likely to see a boob in your life over a drug addict or a dead body. It makes no sense.

Oh, I totally agree with you, that is why I put the article here because I found it so absurd I actually laughed out loud and wanted other people's opinion. The backlash this kid will get for years to come by his peers is way worse than seeing a few chocolate covered boobies dance around on a stage.

I think some parents don't always realize the repercussions of their actions when they feel they are trying to do something good for their child.

  5. What a dumb bitch. Axl should dedicate Rocket Queen to her and do his little rap.

"I stick it in, I pull it out, I grab your head and then I cum in your mouth"

Well, I am sure that would be ok with this woman as long as her kid doesn't see some boobies in the process! :o

WTF, they show bare ass on network television these days. Not to mention Janet Jackson's old boobies on the Superbowl!

I guess she also never heard the motto: Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll!

  6. But he is trying to create a record that lives up to 'Appetite for Destruction,' one of the best albums of all time, and that's taken a long time."

This is the problem, though. Axl needs to just release it. I think he is just overthinking at this point and he needs to just let it go and let the fans decide how the album measures up. Tweaking it to death isn't the answer here.

  7. It's admittedly a slow newsday in GNR land but I found this article a little interesting-

Anyone else here with kids that feel the same way?

    By Jason Bell

SHE won't take her kid down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are topless.

One Winnipeg mom has decided against letting her 14-year-old son attend Monday night's Guns N' Roses concert at MTS Centre after learning a burlesque act has been added to the show.

Suicide Girls, an assortment of pierced and tattooed, semi-nude punk-rockers, will open for Axl Rose and his band, who close out most concerts with the perennial party-anthem Paradise City.

Corina, who didn't want her last name used, figures the downtown arena will be more like Sin City when the Suicide Girls hit the stage.

"It's soft porn," she said. "When I bought tickets to a rock concert for my son, I didn't expect there to be naked women. He and his friend aren't going.

"I think other parents need to be aware so they can make a choice."

The Suicide Girls combine music, choreographed dance and skits -- but it's basically a strip show.

A video on the troupe's website clearly shows there is nudity involved. They aren't dubbed the Most Dangerous Burlesque Tour in the World for nothing.

    Corina isn't at all happy.

"When I bought the tickets for $180, they didn't mention an opening act," she said. "I don't see how minors can be allowed to go to this."

The music critic for the Des Moines Register online newspaper wrote this of the Guns N' Roses opening act (only added to the show in mid-November) following Friday's show in the Iowa capitol: "... five Goth strippers from the Suicide Girls burlesque troupe who twirled a flaming hula hoop and slathered each others' bare chests in chocolate sauce."

MTS Centre officials are well aware of the tour's notoriety.

"There will be some nudity," said Scott Brown, director of corporate communications.

But a decision was made not to send out an advisory warning to audience members, he said. "What will be seen at this concert has been seen before. Motley Crue had some aspects of nudity, and we received no complaints," Brown said.

Suicide Girls and former Skid Row lead singer Sebastian Bach are among several acts expected to open for Guns N' Roses.

Actually, suggesting Guns N' Roses performs Monday night could be wishful thinking.

Tuesday morning might be more likely.

On Friday night, Axl and the boys didn't take the stage in Des Moines until 12:30 a.m., and the show didn't conclude until 2:45 a.m.

But Corina said the scantily clad women, not the expected lateness of the concert, was the clincher.

MTS Centre officials announced last week that since the band usually takes the stage around midnight and plays for a couple of hours, extra Transit buses are being brought in to make late runs.

Buses for most major routes will leave the arena when the show is over, while walkways to some parkades will also stay open later.

    http://www.startribune.com/457/story/845219.html

    Axl's savage supporter

Ex-Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach is all over the place: VH1, "Gilmore Girls" and now the mysterious Guns N' Roses entourage.

No kidding: Sebastian Bach has officially trademarked the name Savage Animal.

"People yell it at me everywhere I go now: 'Hey, Savage Animal!' " Bach said. "I thought it was too good to pass up, so I made sure I owned it."

As is fondly remembered by guilty-pleasure TV watchers, the former Skid Row singer tried to push that moniker on his bandmates in this year's VH1 series, "Supergroup."Because rock 'n' roll is like a savage animal," he growled.

To his credit, Bach never has lost that Spinal Tap-like faith in heavy metal and all its glory. That's probably why the 38-year-old Canadian-born Sebastian Bierk has become VH1's go-to guy for all things metal. (He also hosted its "40 Greatest Metal Songs" and helped Hal Sparks nail Skid Row's "18 and Life" in "Celebrity Duets.")

Bach's unflinching enthusiasm also might explain why he was enlisted for his current role as Guns N' Roses' opening act -- a job that requires a lot of love for rock 'n' roll high jinks.

Bach has been on tour with the ever-erratic GNR since the summer. He filled in for Axl Rose at a European gig, and he has been one of the few people to stick up for Rose and his long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" album.

"Listen, the guy hasn't lost his mind," he said by phone last week from Hollywood, where he taped an episode of "Gilmore Girls" (not one to turn down a TV offer, he has a recurring role as a musician on the show).

Bach sounded eager to rejoin the GNR tour coming to Target Center on Saturday.

"I've been waiting a long, long time to get back on a big arena tour like this," he said.

Bach's old band opened much of Guns 'N Roses' 1991 "Use Your Illusion" tour. But like most people who knew Rose in his heyday, he lost touch with the reclusive singer. That changed early this year when Bach got a text message out of the blue from Rose, inviting him to hang out.

"I thought, 'Who is this idiot messing around with me pretending they're Axl Rose?' " he remembered. "But I pressed 'call sender,' and it actually was him, and it was like talking to Howard Hughes."

Bach soon found out that "the guy hasn't changed all that much. He's still a fun guy who likes to party."

Bach has been equally smitten with the recordings that would be "Chinese Democracy," which probably won't be out by year's end as promised.

"I've heard some incredible music," he said. "He's pulling from a wealth of material. He's got like 30-some songs."

So why can't he just get them done?

"He doesn't explain that to me because he doesn't need to. It's his album and his art," Bach said, turning philosophical. "Rock 'n' roll is filled with stories of musicians that have gone crazy trying to live up to expectations, like Syd Barrett. At the end of the day, Axl has managed to stay pretty damn level-headed. But he is trying to create a record that lives up to 'Appetite for Destruction,' one of the best albums of all time, and that's taken a long time."

Coincidentally or not, Bach was in line to have Scott Weiland's job in Velvet Revolver, the real supergroup featuring Slash and two other ex- GNRers. After his experiences in the "Supergroup" TV series, though, he said, "I'm extremely happy being a solo artist."I actually had a lot of fun in the making of ['Supergroup']," he said, laughing. "But I didn't have much fun watching it."

Bach is putting out his second solo album, "Angel Down," next year, his first disc since 1999's "Bring 'Em Bach Alive." The singer split with the rest of Skid Row in 1996, and the band continued without him.

"I could never go back," he said. "That band name is damaged for good."

Still, he hasn't lost faith in Skid Row's kind of music. Pointing to his 12-year-old son, whose favorite bands are AC/DC and Iron Maiden, Bach believes metal is due for a resurgence. Even better proof, he said, can be found in today's fashion trends.

"You go to the mall nowadays and see stores like Hot Topic, where all the kids shop," he said. "It looks like my basement circa 1988."

  9. So, why is Tommy's word better than the dude from Eagles of Death Metal? He's obviously got an interest in saying the right things in public, that's all he ever does anyway. I'd trust anyone's word over anybody from the GNR camp at this point.

Yea Tommy and the 1000's of people in attendance are all lying to you and you should believe the crapola spread by the Pigeons of Shit instead

WTF, even when things are explained outright to some of you, you still don't get it.

Can we move on from these friggin Pigeons now?

Guns N’ Roses misfires with meandering marathon

    KYLE MUNSON

    REGISTER MUSIC CRITIC

“Rock ’n’ roll all night” was just a cliché until Friday and Saturday with Guns N’ Roses at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

Hard rock singer Axl Rose more than lived up to his eccentric reputation by not taking the stage with his band until 12:30 a.m. Then he ground out a two-hour, 18-song set in a shaky voice. Chose ponderous new songs from his forever-delayed “Chinese Democracy” album. Skittered off stage during the many extended solos doled out by his crack seven-piece band loaded with three ace guitarists.

All told the five-act concert lasted more than seven hours and tested the patience of the 5,363 fans to the point that fights nearly erupted on the general-admission arena floor prior to GNR’s appearance.

For fans it wasn’t so much a rock show as a work shift or endurance test.

On stage the atmosphere might have been best described as an Axlpalooza hodgepodge that featured: unknown, nondescript St. Louis rock band Modern Day Zero; the pile-driving riffs and jazz-influenced solos of Helmet from New York, loudly booed by most of the audience; and five Goth strippers from the Suicide Girls burlesque troupe who twirled a flaming hula hoop and slathered each other’s bare chests in chocolate syrup.

And don’t forget former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach. The eager-to-please hair-metal ham and “Gilmore Girls” cast member doled out sing-along ballads such as “18 and Life.”

This surreal marathon arrived after Rose, 44, spent most of the week on hiatus (including a scrapped concert in Milwaukee) to heal from strep throat and an ear infection.

After four GNR songs — three from its landmark 1987 “Appetite for Destruction” debut album plus a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” — Rose apologized for his tardiness, then joked about it.

“In the words of David Lee Roth, I don’t feel tardy,” he smirked.

Cute. And so GNR’s first concert at Hilton in 18 years and its first in Iowa since 1993 didn’t lack for drama. (It did of course lack for original band members; Rose has continually retooled the lineup that now includes familiar keyboardist Dizzy Reed and Tommy Stinson of the Replacements on bass.)

Rose not only sang but shook maracas and slid behind a grand piano. He whistled his way into “Patience.” His waistband has widened since the ’80s, but still the pony-tailed singer sprinted back and forth across the stage. And despite his ailing voice he out-crooned Bach on their duet of “My Michelle.”

Instead of repaying fans for their loyalty in the wee hours Rose demanded even more patience during the encore. He trotted out the politically charged “Chinese Democracy” title track, followed by a trippy guitar solo from Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal. The dated electronic rhythms of the worst of the new tunes, “Madagascar,” completed the concert’s transition from oddity to status as the lost chapter of a Lewis Carroll novel.

Maybe call Rose the Orson Welles of hard rock — not for the genius tag, but for struggling to live up to the massive success of his debut project through endless tinkering and often serving as his own worst enemy.

The last words Rose sang Friday night — I mean Saturday morning — were “Take me home.”

Exactly what I (and likely a few thousand other hardy souls) were thinking by 2:45 a.m.

  11. Again...

These Pigeons are getting too much publicity from this!

    agreed!

There are 4 topics regarding these morons just on the current page I can see and god knows how many more on previous pages. This crap couldn't be contained in 1 thread? This is starting to look more like a POSM board than it does a GNR one.

  12. From what I have read the Slash part is actually true. I think it goes for Buckethead as well.

After they played the Halloween show in Florida someone posted a review on HTGTH that they were not allowed into the venue because they had Slash and BH costumes on. I will see if I can find it.

So yea, I don't expect a reunion any time soon.

I can also see why it might have been done to prevent fighting in the venue by the fans. Who knows really....

  13. it is not like you are even witty

    What an outrageous lie.

Why are you obsessed with my sig? You constantly bring it up. Do Chris Cornell's smouldering good looks make you uncomfortable?

And, yes, Appetite is a classic album. One of the very best. It was also released nearly twenty years ago.

You are just an outrageously negative person. Every time I read one of your posts I also have to wonder why you wander into this section being that you have no love at all for the current lineup. Your snide remarks are played. Seriously. You are a true dead horse.

If I ever feel like you do the 1st thing I will do is cancel my membership and find something I actually like to talk about.

Oh and I don't find you remotely witty either. <_<

  14. Actually, they aren't scheduled, as far as we know, for the rest of the tour, as it continues in January with the rescheduled dates in California and Nevada. The same goes for the Suicide Girls. :book:

    They are scheduled through December-

  15. All it needs is a girl in torn up neon pink jeans tucked into zip-up black fuck-me boots with an assortment of neon colored shower curtain ring bracelets with some big hairsprayed hairstyle... with optional pink coloring... and we're talkin' major hottie.

    Great find.

    :rofl-lol:

    Cyndi Lauper?

Hey, I'm about as serious as a case of the herp. Think you might fit that bill Bandita? I'd meet you in midtown for a nice night on the town on me if you do

Hahaha, nah I am a T Shirt and jeans kinda gal. I sent the pink pants back to 1985 along with all my old cans of Aqua Net! :xmasssanta:
