No matter what this will be an awesome event.
But my strong gut is this will not be simply the NITL set in a small venue. whether that means guest performers from other bands, AFD from start to finish or Adler and/or Izzy for pieces of the set I have no clue. But there is enough smoke to indicate they are doing something a bit different here. Clearly the promotions w AFD 30 anniversary focus are a tell...they arent crazy.
I am heading in expecting to see the current group in a killer, intimate venue. Anything else will be gravy. but objectively, there is likely to be a surprise or two. i dont think that will be the original 5 ripping through Jungle through Rocket Queen...but something cool is likely to happen.

I don't believe anyone thats won has them in hand. I know I at least have to pick mine up at box office. I know many are desperate, but I'd stay away from Craigslist for this. Its not that kind of an event. Unless they are offering to be at the venue for you to pick up the tickets (likely what they'd have to do and could even never show up in that case cause they never had stuff) I wouldn't believe any of them. Yes, maybe a person or two gets lucky but I'm thinking most of those are scams unfortunately. I think there's a better shot of going to the venue and maybe someone's friend falls through.
I was told pick up day of show...I would be very suspicious of craigslist postings

Amazing some of the ridiculous nitpicking in this forum. I was at two of the Hammerstein shows in 2006 and they are some of my very best GnR live memories (and I was at 3 1991-92 shows). And the Apollo is even more intimate and iconic. I will be there Thursday night and I cant f'ing wait. Seeing GnR in such an environment is a once in a lifetime event and a freaking gift.
So if they play AFD w original lineup thats gravy. But just seeing these guys and specifically Axl and Slash on the same stage and crushing it is one of the only good things in a pretty crazy world these days.
I dont post much but I will try to put something up Friday

Someone block this fucking thread. I appreciate and use this forum a lot and only very occasionally post but some of the re-hashing of the same tired topics on mygnr is beyond the pale at times. I get its the nature of the beast w online forums but this horse is dead and beaten. A much better topic is why they arent signing Dead Horse occasionally
Axl sounds great. he doesnt sound like he did did at 28 and neither does Mick jagger or anyone else who is guilty of getting older. His voice has aged well especially when he rehearses and is in form and of course there are ebbs and flows. its not more complicated than that

He doesn't give a shit about who he is but has a thin skin? That doesn't make sense!
He gives a lot of shit about what people are thinking IMO. He has a thin skin IMO.
And that sucks because he's talented and should release more music but he's afraid of people's reaction. And his music shouldn't use layers and layers to hide his insecurity.
He doesnt give a shit enough to change who he is...he is incapable of that. Having a thin skin doesnt mean you are contrived or a poser...just mean you have low tolerance for criticism
-
Love Axl or not there has never been a rock star or celebrity less contrived or more authentic. he is who is and he doesnt give a shit. part of who he is is being a bit crazy and having thin skin to any kind of criticism ...but he never hides and is as honest to himself and his core as you will find. james hetfield and plenty of others were insanely jealous of Axl for his talent and success.

Metallica never broke up. For new music there needs to be a step 1 as far as Guns is concerned. Unfortunately I believe a massive fear of failure is the biggest hurdle for Axl. He became the biggest band in the world w one release. Had Guns had a slower build to their success they wouldnt be the most criminally under-recorded A+ caliber rock band in history.

LMFAO at the poster who said Axl made a mess of We Will Rock You...Freddie is a vocal legend and a hugely charismatic frontman but when I show people a definitive Axl Rose live performance clip that one is always included. Axl's vocal chops are phenomenal but the only frontman who is in Axl's league in terms of total live stage performance is Mick. Axl's moves, his energy is on a diff level. few singers ever with that kind of magnetism. serial posters here forget how unique he is. freddie and Plant would be the guys for pure vocal chops...but Axl blends vocals and stage presence in a pretty unique way

best original songs by GNR members post UYI: 1) Catcher (agree w you); 2) Street of Dreams; 3) Shuffle it All; 4) Fall to Pieces; 5) Prostitute

hair of the dog or heartbreak hotel

Folks dont differentiate an artist's decision how to interpret a certain tune w "voice quality" - Axl made an understated choice to sing Come Together in a blues style and pulled it off perfectly in my opinion. very different singing than what GNR fans typically see from him but ZERO to do w "vocal quality

I saw them open the big tour at Alpine Valley w/ Axl's foot booted up post accident at one of the smaller surprise warm up gigs. Of the then unheard UYI tunes, Estranged made by far biggest impression due to Axl's long spoken intro to the song. said it was "his baby" and was the UYI song he was closest to. The show was epic and still best of the 6 GNR shows I have seen.

My best attempt at a top 10: SCOM, RQ, PC, Brownstone, Estranged, Dont Cry, Yesterdays, Locomotive, Coma/Breakdown (tie), Jungle
Also Crash Diet needs to be on any top 50 list just for some Indie cred

For me Locomotive is a top 10 no-brainer and I have Catcher as my top CD tune and a top 25 GNR overall. hard to argue w SCOM and RQ as 1-2...I am right there w you. Jungle is overplayed and not as good as PC but its obviously a classic. Yesterdays also a top 10'er for me (know i am in minority there) and Back off Bitch is one of my very least GNR favorites. bad song.
Long live lists though...they never get old and inspire debate. A lot easier to criticize them then to create them

thanks for responses ... no doubt "both" is the right answer. just going to be tough to swing. fact that i am even choosing between 2 shows in the future to see axl and slash on the same stage is surreal.
-
See them open on the 8th vs 2nd show next night on the 9th? Pros for 8th - most hype; avoid risk of cancelled next show. Pros for 9th - band usually tighter on 2nd night; likelihood of guests higher; set list expanded a bit
Thoughts?

would fly anywhere in USA and get best tix avail no matter price. i saw the original line up play twice live and NuGNR play 4x live. all great shows.
Axl is always worth the effort - even if he is just singing a phone book - but I never imagined seeing him and Slash on same stage again in my lifetime. would need to be there.
-
FACT: if you think Axl is a "fact joke" void of stage presence your perspective of reality is somewhere between non-existent and completely out of touch. you have been buried on fan boy message boards hyper analyzing voice, appearance etc and somehow miss the reality that while Axl has aged he still is loaded with more stage presence than most any performer out there. he exudes rock star in a way few besides mick jagger do when he steps on staged
be pissed about no new music. but you lose all credibility on topics like this.
total. fucking. farce.

I was at this show...remember it well. Great show and if you listen to him later on (KOHD if I recall...long time ago) he actually does bring in an inspirational message where he apologizes for the earlier comments and explains himself.
Indiana always brought out strong emotions in the Ax man

Never...just like even the most cynical bashers on this forum with nothing batter to do they rehash the same played out complaints
There are plenty of legit reasons for extreme Guns fan frustration but the undeniable reality is GNR/Axl is most criminally under-recorded artist of our time and anything ...live or new...even at 50% of what was is still better than 99% of alternative
-
let's be clear ...huge difference between hunting elk, deer etc and being a guy who pays big $ to get rolled up to big endangered carnivores like bear (which hetfield's special is about) and pulling the trigger to register a kill. Hetfield is white trasg piece of shit...always has been. whether or not he is racist, Sorum is 100% right here. good for him...hardly taking a Greenpeace/PETA position for calling this dude out
-
I work in Sports Biz and arena rock overuse has made me less a WTJ fan. Its iconic and always will be but I prefer PC in the dual of big AFD anthems and like SCOM, RQ, ISE and NT all better. But Jungle put GNR on the map and has the best intro riff of arguably any epic rock song ever.

What band is truly equal parts? Whether it was the original Guns or the current line-up, these guys are not idiots. Axl is irreplaceable. how many lead singers in history have his stage presence? plus the guy has one of the most unique voices out there. And he ain't the only eccentric lead singer either. Mick is the exception...more often than not the most gifted artists are the most neurotic/high maintenance. Whether its Rock or literature (Faulkner, Hemingway, Joyce, Lord Byron etc). This is a stupid thread. It's a shame Axl isn't more even - for the members and the fans; but cannot blame any band member past, present or future for dealing with him and placating him. When and where will they work with a better talent? Just look at VRs quest to find a singer or one of 100 other bands...

NOBODY who was at the show would say anything but Axl sounded phenomenal. You can nitpick a radio feed all you want...more power to you. But you are working from a flawed product. Every single review of the show (Billboard, Vulture etc) singles out exceptional vocal chops for a reason, everyone who was there would agree. Everyone.
I was mid orchestra level next to John McEnroe and it was funny as I remembered thinking mid performance "well the naysayers can go to town about lack of Izzy and Adler or proper tribute to AFD but they cant say squat about one of the top 3 greatest rock vocalist delivering a lights out performance."
The bitterness of some of the vocal minority of "fans" here is truly mindblowing. Enjoy your time in living in your parents basements in your tidy whiteys.
