  1. Poor Neuer, almost a clean sheet.

    He was fuming. That's professionalism.

Brazil players on their knees praying. It won't help. They were utter dross, and an excellent Germany were ruthless. How soul-crushing must it be to hear what appeared to be their own supporters give the opposition an 'ole' for every pass completed at the end.

  2. Didn't think that it was too bad - as a keeper myself, that's what you do. Get inside their head. Very impressed he went the right way each time: that's homeworK!

It was just mind games and it worked. Damn sight more successful than Joe Hart sticking his tongue out, that's for sure.

  3. Horrible Netherlands, lame triumph.

    They all count.

Belgium, much like France, just lacked any sense of urgency even at the end and so out they go. Argentina looked more of a team than they have so far but still not firing on all cylinders but then again who has?

The Netherlands for me just edged it. Costa Rica have played really well, the definition of a team, and Navas has been outstanding but they just lacked that edge.

As for Neymar, I genuinely thought he'd been taken off as he'd had a blow and Brazil wanted to waste time. Wasn't until this morning I saw how serious his injury was. I hope he doesn't have any permanent damage. It was a bad tempered match towards the end and the referee left it too long to try and exert some control by which time tempers were flaring.

  4. Disappointed in the standard of the official again.

    I know.

It was a bitty game, a lot of play-acting from both sides being rewarded with a whistle, although it seemed to me (and the rest of the pub, who'd swung firmly against Brazil by the end) that the hosts were comfortably getting the lion's share of the decisions.

It was terrible defending for Brazil's first and after that, in contrast to France, Colombia seemed to play with almost too much urgency. They got forward but the final ball seemed rushed. Colombia needed to slow the game down and exert some control as Brazil just charged at them but they never seemed to quite manage it. Rodriguez was superb but it seemed like his teammates weren't quite on the same wavelength. It also seemed that he was allowed to be fouled with impunity.

    Luiz's freekick was something else.

I'm still not entirely convinced by Brazil and it'll be interesting to see how they fare against Germany. I also expect Neymar to come bounding back like a gazelle.

  5. To an extent, but it's no coincidence certain teams don't lose shootouts much, and other teams always choke on them.

There clearly is a psychology behind it. Look at Costa Rica vs Greece. Greece's first shootout. Could you tell? I couldn't.

Better teams'll be better at penalties anyway most of the time.

I dont believe in penalties. They are all based in good or bad luck.

They're a lottery but we've yet to find a better solution.

  6. Yeah, he is a diver, always has been. I disliked him for that still playing for PSV, wrong team.

But he has been taking down for real a couple of times in this game as well.

Most good attackers are divers as well btw, part of being one. :shrugs:.

Still this was a clear penalty. You might not like it, but it was. If it wasn't I would have said it as well.

It (Robben going down) looks worse in slow-motion, these things often do, at the time I immediately thought 'that's going to be given'.
  7. Unfortunate choice of words in this last sentence from BBC live coverage...

"Mexico look far more comfortable with the conditions here at Estadio Castelao. There have started with a real zip in their passing, Hector Herrera has been a handful and Miguel Layun has also caused the Dutch problems. It might be more than 30 degrees down there but Mexico coach Miguel Herrera is not taking his jacket off. Imagine he might have a slightly sweaty back."

They're not allowed to take their jackets off :)

It was more in reference to the last sentence about "sweaty back"; 'wetback' is an American racial slur against Mexicans (though it's almost certain the commentator didn't realise this, just bad luck on his part :P ).

I imagine most people in the UK wouldn't know what 'wetback' meant in his defence. Didn't register with me watching it, although I've heard the term before.

How unfair is football sometimes.

It was cruel. I've enjoyed watching them both but the Dutch were camped outside the Mexican area for most of that half. If you let that happen there's always a chance the opposition will score. Which they did. It was a clumsy challenge that led to the (excellently taken) penalty too. Very fine margins.
  8. Really, Len? I grew up seeing better stuff by my team. People here aren't too happy either. We're all like "yeah, neat game, but I'm still not conviced". Can't blame them either, Chile dominated the game. We're relying too much on Neymar, the Chileans knew and didn't let him play and we got owned on the second half.

Hulk, according to the narrator was "healthfull" and was the best player of the second half, but did he really do something? Other than trying to score a goal with a little helping hand of his?

If I was Brazilian the reliance on Neymar would be my biggest worry.

    Next up Good vs. Evil.
