  1. Sorry but that's a load of crap. If you suspect somebody is carrying a gun (with good reason in this case), identify yourself as armed police and tell them to freeze then what happens next is upto them. All it takes is a split second to pull a gun and if he chose to ignore an armed police officer under those circumstances then tough.

    Spoken like a true Tory.

See, I don't believe that a police officer has any more right to live than a member of the public. After all, the police exist to protect the public. When you authorize an officer to shoot anybody they suspect might have a gun, you no longer have a functioning police force. What you've then created is a state-sponsored paramilitary.

Becoming a police officer doesn't make you some sort of higher being. If anything, you become a servant of the public. When you make a concious decision to join the police, you must accept that your life will be in danger. Fatally shooting somebody that may have a gun is public execution - not good policing.

The police are aware there's a chance their life may be in danger, things like those two policewomen murdered in Manchester and the one shot at in Leeds recently and the guy blinded by Raoul Moat probably remind them of it every now and then.

At what point would you deem it acceptable to fire? When you're sure he has a gun? When you're sure it's real? How about when he's aiming it at you? Should you wait until you're sure the weapon is made ready? Is the safety on? How good a shot is he? Chances are not very good, so he may miss and there's now a round flying through the air in the middle of a public place so that's bystanders now endangered. Do you take that chance?

  2. as a little side question to all of this. for people in the UK is there any real push or any real momentum for the civilians to get some kind of gun rights back? something i have been wondering, i read a report where a british poll said most brits would welcome the ability to have guns.

You can still have guns, as part of a sports club or as a farmer or under certain under circumstances. My uncle has one and manufactures his own ammunition. There's been some call to loosen legislation, mainly to do with sports shooting I believe but having rights to the extent of the US? I don't think so. I'm not sure we ever had gun rights to that extent and I really don't think most British people want it.

    thanks for the response.

as for the extent i was thinking more along the lines of maybe having a handgun for home protection, that kind of thing.

I actually think we'd prefer a more concrete basis in law as to what we are allowed do to protect our homes. It's a bit fuzzy at the moment.

  4. I've never seen an armed cop patrolling in my life. :shrugs:

    Neither have I.

Armed police at airports, yes. But that's been the case for quite some time I'm pretty sure. I remember seeing them in the 90's as a kid.

I've never seen armed police at train stations or sporting events.

All police don't carry tazers either. http://www.acpo.police.uk/ThePoliceChiefsBlog/201302TaserBlog.aspx

Of course, all police are 'armed' in that they carry a baton. Usually now the telescopic ones that extend as you swing them.

  5. It sounds like the jury came to the conclusion (and it is a conclusion not a verdict, this isn't a trial) that Duggan wasn't armed but the police thought he was and opened fire. I'm curious as to what police rules of engagement are regarding firearms though, at what point their line is crossed to justify opening fire.

It also does seem odd that he manages to throw the gun a good few metres from him while in a car. Yet at the same time surely if you wanted to stitch someone up surely you'd plant the weapon in the car, not in a garden a good few feet away?

  6. Hernandez came on too late also. I know there was a delay, but should've been earlier.

Appreciate we should cut our losses with Kags, but could've at least started?

Agree on Pea. I'm not sure what bringing on Fletcher was meant to achieve, although it's excellent to see him back.

Watching the Swansea game Kagawa took up good positions and I could see him calling for the ball. The ball more often or not went to the wings. Maybe our style of play is the problem?

  7. The second-leg is to be shown on The Horror Channel. Afterwards they will be showing 'David Moyes vs Giant Octopus'.

Found that on the internet. Before the match...

Anyway, it really is pouring for Moyes at the moment. In all seriousness we overachieved last season but some of these players may want to ask themselves some hard questions about if they're making maximum effort. I am genuinely puzzled about some of Moyes' decisions (I'm beginning to wonder if these rumours about Zaha shagging Moyes' daughter have some substance) and what we practice in training (defending) but it sounded that with the exception of Januzaj no-one seemed that bothered.

    Still, not out yet.

  8. You can't fake falling like that? Suarez, Bale and Young used to all the time

Edit: My bad, Young still does dive like that only far worse.

Edit 2: Actually to be fair it does look there is slight contact but the ref obviously can't see that in real time.

    Young's so bad it's unreal...

  9. There's something about someone else make it for you. But, I'd rather go to Pizza Hut and make use of the refillable drinks.

    And the salad pizza buffet.

I come back from the salad buffet with a bowl full of jalapeños, pickled onions and tortilla crisps. It's ace.

  10. haven't seen it yet, but I was hoping it would be great. the reviews aren't so hot....

    anyone seen it?

Yeah, I have, only because I was with friends. It's not bad, not great, just 'meh' really. For a film that features an ogre and a demon-bird-ninja man and a shapeshifting witch it's quite dull and overly serious. Also that guy covered in tattoos? The one in all the posters? In it for one scene.

    Rent it.

  11. That six-year contract is beginning to look increasingly optimistic.

This transfer window could very well be defining for Moyes, in that it will outline what his ideas are. This squad is poor, most honest United supporters know that. It's also the same squad that cantered to the title last season, bar Fellaini. Our competitors (City especially) were not great, last season and failed to strengthen. That was one factor in the 20th title. More important, I think, was SAF's influence. There's been a notable drop in the intensity of our play. We haven't had much joy playing City and Liverpool the last few seasons but it's the results against the likes of Cardiff, Southampton and Newcastle that are the most worrisome. These are the teams you need to beat to get into the top four, let alone challenge for the title.

In short, Moyes needs to stamp his authority on the team and soon. Either get this squad to perform because you believe they can or admit that some of them aren't up to scratch and their time is up. At the moment though, we look somewhat directionless and it's unclear what Moyes wants to do with the team.

That said, I don't know who else would've been able to get much better out of a team. Perhaps Mourinho only?

This is the question. This is why I think this window could be important. Sign no-one and continue in the same way, the responsibility falls on him. Like I said, this squad isn't vintage. There are tribes in the Amazon just reached by civilisation who could tell you how poor our midfield are. Regardless it's still a hell of a contrast from last season to this one. Take the risk and recruit he will least be sending a message he sees areas to improve.

How much money does he have to play with?

Surely a lot - we didn't spend in the summer really. Now is the show of support.

Aye. After the debacle that was the summer the club needs to show it can actually go out and compete. There's multiple areas we need to strengthen in but we desperately need some creativity in the middle. It'd be nice to see Zaha given some games too.

  12. Seriously, there are some good frozen pizzas in today's day in age and a lot cheaper too.

Not only is it cheaper, it's peace of mind knowing your food is not being exposed to filthy kitchens and people who are either unsanitary or sick. There's already at least 10 states reporting widespread flu, and the Sydney norovirus / stomach bug is rampant. Even if the pizza place workers have only a cold, do you really want somebody coughing and dripping over your food? Not worth the risk IMO.

It's called an immune system. By that logic you'd never eat round a friend's house.

  15. Eusebio. 733 goals in 745 professional games. Phenomenal. RIP.

On the subject of Walcott's gesture, I'm growing tired of hearing people complain about things like that. Some football supporters need to start acting like adults. A player reiterates the score so you lose all self-control and so you have to throw coins? Or tear up chairs? Or storm onto the pitch? Grow up. They're quite happy to dish it out from the stands but God forbid a player sends it back their way. It's infantile.

Besides, given the price of a pint in some pubs in London I'd keep the money to drown my sorrows afterwards...

  16. Don't forget The Last of Us!

Been playing through Uncharted 3 recently and I am a little underwhelmed. Maybe it is because I got it on PS+ and haven't played the other two but the gun play is terribly clunky and the controls are damn floaty and flip between been overly sensitive and not responding. It certainly didn't help that I played Tomb Raider before it and it has both fantastic gameplay and controls.

Funny you should say that, I've just been playing it and come to the same conclusion. It's a gorgeous game, one of the few that don't look horrible when upscaled on my big TV, but it doesn't half get repetitive. Get rushed by normal enemy, armoured enemy and occasionally a super-armoured enemy, with the occasional sniper/RPG wielder. Add in a liberal sprinkling of grenades. Even Drake comments on how monotonous it gets at one point.

The shooting feels way off, trying to hit someone in the head can be quite testing, often it seems that unless you hit them square between the eyes they just shrug it off. Better just to pump rounds into them (especially on the climbing sequences) or engage in hand-to-hand as Drake has become nails.

If it weren't for some genuinely enjoyable sequences to break up the combat I probably wouldn't have played the series past the first entry.

Yeah my favourite parts are by far the "quieter" sections with platforming and puzzle solving, the areas with gun fights are pretty poor. For example there is a part in the third game I just did where you have to kill a miniboss, however he is armoured and in order to kill him you have to lead him to the opposite end of the area you fight him in so he will spawn some enemies, you then have to kill those enemies so another guy can spawn above you who you need to kill and he drops the grenade launcher to kill the mini-boss. None of this was explained and it is virtually impossible to work out unless you look up a guide as the bosses weapon is very powerful and will kill you in a couple of hits.
Is that on the ship with the cargo containers sliding around? Got past that bit today, it was only by chance I noticed the guy with the grenade launcher. The two levels before that where you have to swim through the pirate's ship graveyard then board the liner were a real chore but then you get that great section where you move through the ship as it sinks complete with the inverted rooms and the sea washing against the windows. The whole game in microcosm.

Yes indeed! Didn't want to mention too much for fear of spoilers. The ship graveyard part was fun but I would have preferred the option for a stealthier approach, I guess after playing The Last of Us which Naughty Dog also made, and having the option to go in all guns blazing but with a focus more on stealth I expected more options.

The ship exit set-piece was excellent and very fun to play through. After getting stuck on that mini-boss I also got stuck in the dining hall area where you have two snipers and a grenade launcher guy on the balcony above you as other soldiers enter the room, in the end I had to hide under the balcony so they couldn't shoot me. Guess it teaches me for playing the game on hard

Hiding under the balcony was the tactic I adopted in the end. If you like the ship sequence, wait until an airborne set-piece that's a great nod to a certain Bond film.

Beat the game today too. The last few levels might test your patience. ;)
